If you’re looking for some other [insert animal here] boxes to build, I recommend a bat box! Lots of bats are unfortunately endangered due to a number of factors, but we can help them by providing good habitat. Next to your pond is perfect because bats drink from ponds. Plus, bats help control bug numbers.

Yes, a predator guard will be essential. Even more since the box is too exposed. Owls nest in cavities in trees, I don't know if they'll use that one all exposed in the middle of a field. Even if you add a predator guard it will still be exposed to other birds.

For the owl houses, the one you have looks like it’s for a barn owl, which is a lot smaller than the owls in your video which look like a great horned owls. You possibly may need a bigger house for the great horned owls and they don’t add anything to the inside so it’s also recommended you put wood shavings, leaves and small sticks inside for them to use. Also put something around the post to keep raccoons or other predators from climbing it. Just a few tips I’ve learned from getting into it, you’re very lucky to have them that close 👍👍
@richardwaiz6132

I think it is for a screech owl, which is a much smaller bird. It is too small for a barn owl and way too small for a great horned owl as you say. The pair in the video are just using it for a convenient perch. A barn owl house should have floor dimensions of at least 20 inches by 30 inches and the bigger the better.

@@richardwaiz6132 They are definitely Great Horned Owls. They prefer to nest in trees as their nests are pretty large. Given the number of large trees around that pond they would nest in the trees over a box.

@Sub if you are against Antifa and BLM I had one swoop down on my 45 pound mutt a few weeks after it nearly killed a 12 pound terrier. No idea how that little dog got away. My neighbor keeps her little dogs close now and she paid quite the vet bill to save the dog. Biggest owl I have ever seen in my life. The wingspan was easily five to six feet. I thought it was a golden eagle initially but on second thought the way it dived on one of my mutts convinced me it was an owl. Since then I haven't heard that bird in a couple years. I love that the owls hunt the mice, but I don't like them hunting my mutts.

I have a much smaller pond, around 3/4 of an acre. I like lilly pads. Removes nitrates from the water and adds shade which can prevent alage blooms. It also adds more oxygen to the pond. While yes, they can easily take over, lilys are easy to remove by dragging a floating rake behind the boat. My wife also loves when the flowers bloom because it brings in tons of honey bees and hummingbirds. Plus i love watching a bass blow up from under them skipping a frog over the top.
@panaque
@panaque 2 жыл бұрын
actually Lilly pads are awful for aeration in a pond as they cover the surface which is where the oxygen gets into the water, as well as where the nitrogen off gasses. so no plants that cover the surface
@peterheinrichs7634
@peterheinrichs7634 2 жыл бұрын
@@panaque You're so right! I lately made my angler licence in Germany. Well balanced water habitats are a big part of the lessons. Lilipads block of the light. The leaves are on top, so, the oxygen doesn't go onto the water. But, I guess, they povide a great area of cover for baitfish (especially from birds). You may consider a part of the pond coverd as a resting area for your fish. But, it's a lot of work, to keep it from over growing a shallow pond like this.
@bewwio
@bewwio 2 жыл бұрын
@@panaque i agree with what you are saying to a degree. In a large surface area like his pond or even mine, even the slightest breeze causes surface agitation which creates oxygen. You can also visually see oxygen gassing off of the stems and roots of the lilies. Also the shade lowers temperatures which is important in a state like alabama where it gets extrememly hot and can lead to oxygen issues. Im not talking about covering the entire pond with lily pads as i agree that would be absolutley catostrofic. But 10-20% coverage would not harm oxygen levels.

I am a little bit obsessed with this series! Well done! It’s looking great. Regarding the pond plants, you could plant them in aquatic pots which will contain and restrict the roots so the plants will never get larger than the pot allows. Then every couple of years just lift them and split the plants into multiple new plants and that way you’re in control of the volume and size of the plants rather than leaving it to nature and having to pull out any natural excess. Just a thought.

The biologist is right, never plant cattails or lily pads. Unfortunately, the fauna and wind will bring them to you anyway. One of the nicest plants I saw around a pond was patches of iris that provide colorful flowers in the spring. I think you should also consider planting a weeping willow tree. They look spectacular next to ponds. More than a few weddings have been conducted near weeping willows by ponds and lakes. Something to consider in about 20+ years when your daughter is grown. Also consider adding that protein rich phytoplankton that comes from Japan. Apparently, it enriches the food chain and produces bigger fish.

The white bird is a Great Egret. Closely related to the Blue Heron. One recently got all of my goldfish in my backyard pond, but that's the circle of life. They are beautiful creatures. The Double Crested Cormorant is also a very beautiful bird. They have crystal blue eyes. You'll likely get Anhinga's soon too. They look similar to the cormorant but have sharp beaks and ruby red eyes. The frog eggs are bunched up in groups because they are frogs. Toads lay their eggs in a row or line. You won't be able to tell what species they are until at least pollywog stage. An expert may be able to guess, but most frog tadpoles look the same. They are likely the green tree frogs you had in your shed. They will also take over your pond for a short while. Once you get some predator fish they will keep them in check. As for plants, you should do whatever is native to your area. I love iris and pickerel rush. These will keep your shoreline in check, and will be easier to maintain than cattails. You can also do some hardy lily pads, but put them in a thick plastic or metal tub. That way the rhizome and roots don't spread like wildfire. Then you can pull them out or move them year to year. If you do tropical lilies they will die off every winter. A good native underwater plant is hornwort/coon tail. It's native, but does grow really fast. I'm not sure how that will effect a large pond like yours. I like anacharis too, but I don't think it's native. Foxy is a Sherman's Fox Squirrel if you were wondering. And the owls are Great Horned Owls. Hope this helps! I love this series and the nature/animals. If I could, I would be doing the exact same thing as you are doing. lol

The camera is facing South not North as you can see Sirius in Canus Major at 7:20 also, remember the North Star appears stationary in the sky and all the other stars appear to be moving around it. The bright one is either Jupiter or Saturn, it can't be Venus as Venus is only in the East and West just before or after the sun and doesn't ark across the sky like that (just up and down or forward and back really depending on your location) since it's between us and the sun so it can never be behind us like Mar, Jupiter, Saturn and so on.

You may want to consider Arrowhead plants (Sagittaria latifolia) for around the edge of the pond. They are not very invasive and would be a good match. Also, Another good one for the edge of the pond are Iris plants/ Be sure to get an aquatic variety as not all iris plants like their roots submerged.

Hornwart is a great grass, it looks like hydrilla but doesn't spread as fast, great for oxygenating ponds also. Tadpoles eat it too
@blaircox1589
@blaircox1589 2 жыл бұрын
And grows extremely fast. Fills aquariums and ponds pretty fast. But I don't think it creates much if any root structure as it floats. So guess you could just cut and harvest it to thin out. Outside that, I know the more aggressive plants are kept in pots so they don't establish roots in the pond. But might be too late to set that up. You likely would have wanted a rocky buffer area in case a pot tips over and they escape.

@joshuam5689
@joshuam5689 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call hornwort a grass. It's a free floating aquatic plant. They can attach to the substrate at times but don't grow real roots. They will sink in the winter and rise in the summer, especially when they flower and reproduce, the offspring overwinter and then germinate and grow the next year. The plant can grow incredibly fast if there are lots of nutrients in the water, they are great for keeping the water clean and healthy and routinely outcompetes cyanobacteria and algae. When they grow into dense mats they are also perfect homes for fry and small crustaceans like shrimp or some braver crawfish if they were to be added to the pond.
@joshuam5689
@joshuam5689 2 жыл бұрын
Also tadpoles don't really eat the hornwort, the plant is pretty resistant to being eaten until they die or shed their leaves. Tadpoles love it because it's safe and the bacteria, fungi, and other small critters they eat live in it

I think I was able to ID that large canine you catch on the trail cam. I believe it is a Red Wolf. In the past they were almost eradicated. The 90's saw a population boom and now found in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and southern Mississippi. Could you grow cypress around the pond? I don't know if the climate is right but it's an idea.

@joshuam5689
@joshuam5689 2 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt it's a red wolf, the closest to red wolf would be a coyote with red wolf genetics. The red wolf is almost extinct in the wild. There are maybe 20-25 of them left in the wild, their population is all captive and captive breeding and release has been hit or miss. Most populations that have been released have been unable to survive or adapt properly. Most reports estimate around 10 wolves were naturally wild before releases that brought the population up. The population is largely located around North Carolina. It is extirpated in Alabama and the rest of its native range.

Glad to see you like my idea for some owl box's. Got a couple tips on getting them to start nesting. A good nesting material is untreated wood shavings and dried pine needles or dried leaves 2 too 3 inches off the bottom of the box with drainage. and A 6×7 entrance is good for Barn owl's. And you are going to want the entrance facing North and the box 15 to 20 feet off the ground in a shady area. And if on a pole you are going to want a baffle to keep predators out and the Perch is not necessary only gives predators a foot hold. I really do enjoy your videos of the wildlife and constructing of the pond. Well here's hoping for some Owlets in the near future.
