In this video we harvest some tomatoes, make sauce and salsa from them. Then we move the old chicken coop to the island for the ducks. Then make some chicken nesting boxes in the new chicken coop

about his way to educate his son, totally agree, when i was younger about 8-10 years I love to do stuff witch my dad, he was a carpenter and teach me how to use some tools, like driving screws on scrap wood just to tell me how to do it the right way. that's why now with 20 yrs I see myself so reflected in your boy

@@choffidge I think people tend to forget that the manliest thing that exists is being a kind, caring, honest, individual who loves and provides for their family and others. Too many think it is just being some macho douchebag who acts 'tough and strong'.

This was a nice series to watch. I especially like that you involve your children, it is so good for them. So many children have no chance to do outdoor things or learn how to make things. It will teach them far more than watching television or playing computer games all the time.

When I was young we lived beside a small holding that had a crab apple tree next to our house. One year myself and my brother picked the apples and fed them to the ponies, the next day they couldn’t stand as the apples had fermented in there gut and turned into alcohol oh man did we get into trouble for that 😆👍🏻

If you talk to woodworkers locally, you’ll get all the sawdust and planer shavings for bedding you’ll use in your lifetime 😉 I’m a small time woodworker and I generate 6 very large garbage bags of planer shavings a year….which normally go in the garbage. Large scale woodworkers generate a lot. They’ll be glad to get you to take it away for bedding. It can also be used on paths through forests. Wood shavings are mostly carbon, so putting them in the soil in large amounts can cause problems unless you add nitrogen, etc., especially trace elements. I had a bed grow very spindly flowers for awhile until I figured out that planer shavings as a mulch worked for keeping moisture in and weeds out, but degraded the soil quality.

Great setup there, Jesse! Especially liked the Saturday smoker tradition:) For the ducks - you can use an automatic door opener from "Chicken Guard". Your Tomatoes, cucumbers and beans will grow and produce more if you give them a post or string to grow up, they are all basically vines and love to climb, also so low to the ground they are more susceptible to mildew. Excess tomatoes will make great chutney, even adding some green ones. The cockerel with the jazzy haircut is a Japanese silkie, both male and female are marvellous parents and will foster other chicks, the hen is a great brooder, they come in both bantam and full size chickens, not very prolific layers.

I so love your little dogs, they are just so cute. The green beans need to be up on a trellis, My husband says the chicken that looks like it has a bad hair day, is actually a Polish Chicken. His mother had some when he was growing up..Paul and I are fully enjoying the HOMESTEADING videos. having food that you can and can use during the winter, it always tastes better cause you know what's in it:-) I have not gardened in about 3 yrs, due to my spinal issues, but have been getting it ready for next spring. BTW, never throw out your egg shells. save all of them, put them in a bucket or container over the season, and come next year, put it in the garden soil, gives the soil extra calcium can also put in ash from burns, and mix that and the crushed eggs shells in the soil and then plant, that is what I have been doing... For me, I canned Beets, My husband loves my canned beets, my late mother taught me how to can them, and I do it the same way and Paul loves them. Have to get to where I can cann our own tomatoes as well, I also want to can some home grown pickles, and sweet peppers. also made and canned homemade Rhubarb Jam... I always mixed it with a bit of berries and OMG, Tasty:-)...I just have to make sure to not go nuts on the canning, cause it gets to be too much for just Paul and I.

I have some authentic Mexican Salsa recipes given to me by a Latino friend. Will be glad to share with you. Also have a family recipe that has been in the family for years for pickled beets and glad to share that also if your are interested. Over the years I have collected Southern farm recipes from farmers wives which included how to can and freeze many different crops. Growing up I was raised on the concept of sustainable living, not as a fad, but rather a way to have food to eat during the winter. Also, I heard you son say "you can make jelly with those", I believe, when you were talking about the crab apples and indeed you can.

For someone that doesn't know much about canning it sure looks like you did your homework. If you plan to do more canning in the future, I would suggest is to get a pair of tongs made specifically for canning. They are designed for picking up canning jars and you won't have to worry about dropping a jar as you pic it up out of the hot bath. And you only need one hand to do it.
