its a core hole with a freezer plug. two different purposes. three if you expect it to keep the coolant in liquid form. pretty good thing to have

I’ve always used the correct size sockets to drive my brass freeze plugs here in the north without issue.. I’ve seen some shops actually epoxy them in.. I do like your new driver, think I’ll turn me out one on the lathe out of a piece of nylon.. Good video Allen, good to see the 302’s coming along.

Older 400 blocks had 3 freeze plugs on each side and later 400's have just two per side. 70 through 72 have 3 plugs per side. 73 and later 400's have two plugs per side. The casting for the center plug is in the block, but it is not machined on the later 400's. You can buy different mandrels for the cheap cam besring tool, sbc and bbc...

I cut a small 45 on the meeting of the thrust bearing where the top and bottom set. The idea is to force feed the thrust face on engines that will be held on the tranny brake.

Let's add another choice for the name for the plug. Steel cup plug. That doesn't roll off the tongue but is probably the most accurate name. I wonder what it is called in England being it will wind up under the bonnet.

If you point a torch at cold metal the steam in the flame will immediately liquify on the cold surface of the block. (You are burning a hydrocarbon after all). The block would quickly rust if it had water on it. I do not believe there is water in the metal. Any iron in contact with water and air will rust immediately. Also note that air will dissolve in water if above freezing so rust will start immediately.

Uncle Tony’s Garage did a video on torching the block first to pull the cleaning solvents from the block before painting. There was a difference between the two sides of the block when he finished, he had to go over the one side several times before it stopped wicking out.

Believe or not, by torching the bare steel with a propane torch, you are actually hitting the surface with a very high content of moisture. Not kidding! When propane burns, it creates a huge amount of water and you are actually causing instant flash rust on the bare steel...and that's what you are describing at 14:41 in the video with your comment of the "changing color there." That is moisture forming on the surface, and you can almost see a slight browning of the steel...in other words, rust. The only way to accomplish what you are attempting to do is with a heat gun, or indirect heat from a propane torch...but direct heat from propane is a horrible idea on bare steel.

That cam tool is junk, caused me to ruin 4 cam besrings and I have put lots of cam bearings over the years without any problems. I went back to the single cam bearing tool for a bbc, 3 piece and works fine AG.
