Hi everyone! I have changed my channel name to be my real name "Austin Blake" - something that I have thought about doing for a long time now! My original channel name "austiwawa" is something that I came up with back in 2007 and it really didn't have any significant meaning behind it. Just wanted to let you all know! Hope you all enjoyed the video and thanks for watching :D

I was very surprised how well that motor worked. I had the same thought as you, I just assumed it would have overheated after a minute or so. Very cool!

I figured that since it normally draws 1000+ Amps, it would overheat at that current and running for an extended time, but the current is being limited to 120A. Since power is I x I x R and since R will be the same (about 10V/1000A = 0.01 ohms), power used in its original (cranking) application will be 0.01 x 1000x1000 = 10,000W, while now with current limiting it is 0.01 x 100 x 100 which is about 1000W. Lets assume the efficiency is around 90%, that means that when being used for cranking (1000A) - it will lose about 1000W as heat - that will cook it given enough time. With current limiting it will be closer to 100W - which will is not enough to heat the case to any dangerous temperatures. Probably best to focus on bearings as per 1dfgaJ83K92 suggestion.

I believe the significant reason behind starter motors being considered inadequate for projects (aside from their very low resistance) is that they don't usually have bearings. They usually rely on bushes and as such aren't suitable for prolonged operation. It would be interesting to see if replacing the bushes with bearings allows your motors to run for a long time.
@CenReaperYT.

Also the fact that they draw a horrendously high amount of current is one of the reasons (100-200 Amps if it's a starter for small car).

I think an aluminum or copper heat sink would be far preferable to drilling holes in the housing. It's always possible that you could find an extrusion that fits but if you have access to a good mill & use a half-inch plate of aluminum, or maybe 1 inch, you could just mill channels in the plate till the deepest cut leaves the thinnest parts about .030". Then just find something to wrap it tightly around the motor housing, such as a large hose-clamp. You could go one better & attach fan blades or a large computer fan to the back of the motor. So long as you make the fins of the heat-sink parallel to the rotor shaft so the fan pulls the air in the most efficient direction. I would try to keep the motor under 200 degrees F to be on the safe side.

I am a Motor/Generator Engineer ... (Electrical Power Engineer) . Standard Automotive Starter Motors will work just fine for light-duty applications, like carts and trikes . You can run them for years. As long as they are not getting hot to the touch. You are fine. Look for starters that draw under one amp at unloaded, free running conditions. If your electrical connections get hot, use some Electrically conductive grease . I built an electric car with 4 starter motors. 4 wheel drive. I have been using it for years. You can put air holes in the front plate like you show in this video, but you dont usually need it. Just check it for over heating. After running, just hold your hand on it. if you can not hold onto it, without getting burned, then you are in danger of overheating. Good luck!

As a kid in the late 80's, we made some wheeled projects and the craft, design & technology teacher said to us that starter motors were prefect for the projects and we just ran with it. The only issue I had was burning my hand on a cable but starter motors (powered by lead/acid batteries) were definitely capable but nowhere near as fast with modern batteries so keep running with the starter motors but always keep an eye on temp so fit a thermometer.

You might be able to just add some cooling ribs to the case of the motor by just cutting some grooves into the case. This way you don't comprise it being waterproof. I would just put the case in your lathe and turn some grooves.
