The Story Unfolds in Spring Farm
A newly moved-in homeowner finds himself puzzled as his FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) internet service isn't extending to his granny flat. He reaches out to us to investigate the situation. The culprit? A data cable that was supposed to connect his main residence to the granny flat ends up being a dud. Our team embarks on a meticulous investigation to trace the issue.
What Went into the Investigation?
We start with tone testing the cable socket in the garage to find out if it's transmitting any signal to the granny flat. Failing to find a tone, we examine a second socket located in the granny flat. Again, no luck. It becomes evident that there's a deeper issue at hand, leading us to dig further into the setup.
Crawling Through Ceilings and Cavity Spaces
Our team doesn't shy away from the dirty work. We crawl through the ceiling to trace the data cable's actual path. Initially, the cable seems to run from the main house into the granny flat, but on further inspection, it drops down into a cavity inside the main house. The discovery is nothing short of shocking; the cable that was meant to serve the granny flat is instead wired into the kitchen of the main house.
Why This Matters?
Such an oversight is not only inconvenient but also costly. The homeowners will now have to pay additional charges to get the house rewired correctly. What’s more frustrating is that this could have been avoided if Lily Homes, the building company, had adhered to quality control protocols.
Lessons to Learn
The case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of quality control and assurance in telecommunication setups. Always make sure to double-check work, keep communication transparent and ensure that everything is in line with your contract.

We have provided the homeowner with a detailed report of our findings, which will hopefully be used to hold the builders accountable for their oversight. We have also offered a quote for rewiring the data cables correctly.
