southway1943 Hi Peter and thanks mate, I really enjoyed building that ash pit, at that time I didn’t really know what I was doing (still don’t! 😂😂) but it came out ok in the end, I’m gradually bringing back most of the stuff from the previous layout. Spent an hour in the train room today just sitting and thinking about the track plan. Cheers for now mate. .......... Graham

Awesome Graham, just awesome. 21:00 Just In Time Delivery - how appropriate! 23:34 "There are no wheels on it" - YET - and lighting to come… You will need some 'gawpers' looking over the highstreet wall at the container yard activity, I know I'd be looking! A whole new adventure at Lakeside. Have a great 2020.

Steve Harper Hi Steve and thank you for the very kind comment. Like you, I am looking forward in getting stuck into constructing this new section of Lakeside, this could yield a lot of detailing from the three sections - TMD, engine shed and turntable and of course the yard itself so a lot to keep me busy but the first part will be working on the track plan and laying the track for both the stock and of course the crane itself so exciting times for me and hopefully all you subscribers too. I intend putting up another video in about a weeks time when I hope that I would have progressed a little further. Cheers for now mate. ......... Graham

Hi Graham I am amazed at the progress you have made on the new lakeside. I have been viewing your channel since late 2018. I have a layout but nothing like yours. I look forward to future videos . Happy New year to you and your wife and happy modelling. Basil MC Donnell Ireland.

Toniandbaz Duffy Many thanks for those very kind words Basil, they are greatly appreciated as always. Yes, I remember last Christmas too, it seemed a very daunting task sitting in between all that timber and locos thinking I have all that work ahead of me but to be honest, it has been a real joy to build up to what you see today, 99% of the time then everything has gone according to plan with just few things left to modify as it was not going to work as planned out but I knew I would have to change a few things as I went along but nothing major. This new stage of the container yard is going to be a bit of a challenge to fit everything in I want but I should be able to do it - just! Time will tell I guess. 👍🏻😉. Looks good. Overhead crane area I think needs to be concrete and the rails sunk in so trucks can go over them and there is a storage facility on the roadway if required. Crane only has one rail per side. If the crane is electric, don't forget the trailing lead on the bobbin. Happy New Year, Des.
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Des Silverson Hi Des and thanks for the comment. Yes, the yard will be mainly concrete hard standing and all rails including the main tracks will be level with it to allow lorries and vehicles to drive over them. The crane will have only one rail each side as a normal container would have, this will again be level with the concrete hard standing. There will also be a ‘turnaround’ section for the lorries to use on exit. Hope that helps. Cheers for now. .........Graham

Neat addition. Lots of new room to fill up with a container yard. The manor house has been a favorite structure of mine since the first video I watched that included it. Hello Graham, Well you are doing what you said you were trying to avoid, that is making it cramped and complicated. I would suggest the permanent drop down option and move the drawers to the other side of the room just left of the lake. Always interesting to see what's happening at Lakeside. Cheers mate, David.
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
David Atkins Sorry David but I disagree with you on both counts. It’s not in my opinion cramped or complicated, do you not think that as I was working this out and then building it that I would think to myself “oooh, this feels a bit cramped” or “blimey, this is going to be complicated”. If I had thought that then I would not have carried on and built it. I still have far more room in there than my previous layout so sorry mate, but you are completely wrong on both those assumptions. Obviously in comparison to your huge train room then you may think it’s small and cramped but I’m fine with it and as always, that’s all what really matters. When you see the finalised track then you will also see that it’s extremely uncomplicated too. Cheers for now mate. ........... Graham

Hi and happy new year. Just a suggestion, would it be better to swop the road to the back edge near the walk way and keep the tracks nearer the existing line into the areas. The road down from the high street would need only 1 slope with access to the terminal moved to the small infill piece next to the manor house. Just a thought to save a bit of extra room. All the best Ian
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Ian Swinnerton Hi Ian and yes, I had already tried that on a rough layout, there are a few options I have but the main thing which determines where anything goes is the turntable. Once I have finalised where that would best fit then I can work on the access road and obviously the track too. With quite a narrow area to work in then it’s not easy to get everything flowing especially when I have to take into account the joists underneath the baseboards. I will get it sorted eventually though. Cheers for now mate. ............ Graham

Happy New Year and thanks for a great year of Lakeside. I like the addition. Not sure if it's your final placement, but I wonder if the container lift could move to the left a bit so your elevator and station entrance are in full view.
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Ursa Major Hi mate, the crane can move up and down its own track so it needn’t stay in one spot, I only put it in that position so I could show either end of the yard but you’re right, being in the centre like that does spoil the vista across to the lift. Happy New Year mate and have a fabulous 2020. Cheers for now. ...........Graham

Looks like it's going to be a great addition. Only thing I would say is that the turntable may be better positioned inside one section rather than over a join. Would minimise the amount of work required to reinforce the cut outs (unless you intend to mount it on the surface with a short rise leading up to it). Looking forward to another year of inspiring work :)
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Edward Gray Absolutely Edward, the turntable must fit into an area where no cutting of major joists occur, but I have designed the extension with that in mind which is why I have only screwed the baseboards down so that one the turntable has finally be positioned then I can just unscrew the panel and cut the hole and then place the panel back on the framework again. Hopefully it will work out as planned. There is quite a large motor underneath the turntable so I need to take that into consideration too. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

Wow! that's going to be a lot of work. I just love your Manor House diorama. Is there a video of you making it. I have just finished putting one together and made a cock up with one roof section and when I removed it, it took some of the roof paper with it. I photocopied another piece of roof twice and made two repair sections. There is a slight difference in the shade. It is on the back roof so I am hoping that it will not be seen. We seem to have lost three KZfaqrs, Barrie Davis, Charlie Bishop. and John's Train Set Is it because of Coppa? Can you still post videos if you put the disclaimer at the start? Concern. Hi Graham, Happy New Year to you. I think the TMD/Container Depot will look really good in the format that you have it in now, one thing you may have to consider, is a concrete hard standing over part of the track, wide enough for the Trucks to turn around on so they can drive back out. ...Cheers. Les.

Pauline Griffiths Hi Pauline and thank you. I thought I did mention in the video that there would be a concrete hard standing area but maybe I’m wrong, without replaying it then I can’t tell but if I omitted that then I’m sorry, there will be a large concrete hard standing for lorries and other vehicles to run over the tracks which will of course be level with the concrete and will also have the facility for the lorries to turn round too. Hopefully this will all make sense as I progress the build. Cheers for now. .......... Graham

What progress and its only the 3rd day of Christmas and my post man gave to me....oophs I mean the New Year! Looks fantastic and what potential, having a blank canvas again has really fired you up. The access to the rear has worked out so well, great sound logical reasoning as usual. Like very much the Metcalfe engine shed modification (I have just joined two goods yards in tandem), how do you weather them, it is extremely realistic - is it by airbrush? Is it possible for you to give some insight when doing say the container lift please?
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Stephen Pike Hi Stephen and thanks for the comment. The weathering of the engine shed was by both airbrushing and dry brushing, so a mixture of both really, plus adding guttering and downpipes etc. This extension gives me three new areas: the TMD, steam engine shed and of course the container yard and all that includes so a lot going on in quite a small area so I need to be careful that this doesn’t become overly worked. Time will no doubt tell ! 👍🏻. Cheers for now mate. ........... Graham

Wow your almost as fast as Jenny Kirk. Great progress on the new area, are you going to get all that into the space? I mean TMD, steam shed and Container Terminal...........Your going to have to plan that really well, and I can't wait to see how you get on. As regards the Container Terminal, I quite often take containers into Daventry International Railfreight Terminal for work. There is a siding or two outside the compound, then the trains get brought inside for loading/unloading only. That means they store containers for later trains on the ground inside the compound. They don't have a big crane like yours but use a Kelmar container handler, like a big forklift, without forks which picks up the containers using the top twist locks and loads them onto the waiting lorries or the train. The whole compound is concrete with sunken rail, which allows the Kelmar and lorries access to load/unload and turn round. One other thing, very important, make sure the doors on the containers are at the back of the lorries, else they can't be unloaded when they get to their destination, very important and many red faced drivers over the years have got that one wrong. Hope these comments help you Graham, looking forward to the next instalment, regards Dave.

stretchedits Hi Dave and thanks for all that information, that really is helpful and much appreciated. The strange thing is that I never rush things, I like to take my time and enjoy what I’m doing, I have always said form the outset that it’s not a race but I guess it helps that I do a lot of planning before I start a project so I’m not wasting time later on because it doesn’t work out. Graham don't compromise on the extension hinge idea like you have stated it will make access a doddle to reach the back scene, also have you thought about modifying your top storage drawer front to hinge down using cupboard ball latches to secure when lifted back up you would not need the flap to be the complete width of the drawer 4 to 6 inch in from each end would give you good access to your stored stock. I am thinking that it would be easier than moving the whole drawers forward like you have planned but i respect you may differ. Happy new year Graham & Kind regards, ....Andy
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Andy Pandy Hi Andy and thank you for the informative comment, it’s greatly appreciated. I have decided since making this video that I will keep this as a hinged extension - it just makes sense doesn’t it? I can carry on as it is so that’s fine and even when complete I know that I will still be able to reach whatever I want with it being hinged and can fold down for easy access. Greetings from the United States! I am thinking of placing a cargo terminal on a separate portion of my Oregon-based layout. It would be near Portland, which is a decent bit away from my area in South-Central Oregon; however, with clever usage of scenic transitions, distance is left to the imagination upon viewing each scene of the layout.

Hi Graham, Happy New Year to you, hope you had a good Christmas, do like watching your videos. given me some great ideas :) for when i start building my N Gauge layout. I work for Freightliner based at Tilbury, and before they closed the Container part down we (their still there but used for other traffic) had 2 crane roads separated down the middle with a roadway for lorries to enter and on and off load. with a (what we called ) Banjo at the end for lorries to turn, Both roads are laid on normal ballast, using concrete sleepers under the cranes. hope this helps :) going off subject, how did you progress with the lift doors?
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Peter Neve Hi Peter, I intend to have most of the yard as concrete hard standing so that vehicles can manoeuvre easily through the most of the yard, the container trucks will have their own areas to work in with a turn round area at the end of the yard. Probably not correct but that all I can do in the limited space I have available. I have done anything to the lift doors and something I still need to do at a later stage. Graham, happy new year! Interesting to see how you go with the container yard, especially if the yard ends up being mostly static. Or will you have Faller for the container lorries? You may wish to look at the plans for an American style marshalling yard (with in- and out-roads) and then have the container crane as the “industry” that the marshalling yard supports. In the real world (yes, not needed for your railway) does the train move under the crane, or does the crane tracks and road extend for the whole length of a train? Your running session of a couple of days ago had a good length container train, and it would be a shame if your terminal could not deal with that. Just a consideration, which I’m sure you’ve already got a plan for! Regards, Tom
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Tom Lawton The container yard will always be small Tom as I haven’t the luxury of a huge room or loft space so I have to make do with what I have but that’s fine for me, I have learnt to live with the small dimensions and allow for that which is why this yard is going to be more of a representation rather than a full blown working model of one. The train you saw on the previous video will actually fit within the allocated area (two actually) so that won’t be a problem. As long as I can see and play within that area then it will be fine for me and don’t forget that there will also be the TMD and engine shed/turntable in that new extension too so I have to allow for them as well. Cheers for now. ........... Graham

I'm looking forward to seeing this new area being built up and I am sure it will look amazing. As for the container crane movement, as a suggestion (maybe not prototypical, but functional) you could lay down N gauge or smaller track buried below a concrete surface. Then maybe build four N gauge bogies from wagons with a short wheel base. With yellow painted plastic card skirting to hide the wheels, but with a lip around the top edges to rest the four legs of the crane on to enable the unit to glide up and down the length of the yard.
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
John Crooks Hi John and yes, I have already thought about how I can make the crane traverse on its own rails and the way I had thought is not far off what you have suggested and I need to consider that early on when I am laying the track for the yard. Only time will tell I guess. 👍🏻👍🏻. Cheers for now mate. ........... Graham
@TATICMOOR4 жыл бұрын
@@GrahamFoulston If the legs of the crane are hollow Graham. You could make a plastic card insert that is think enough to glue in wheel bearings at the correct gauge to hold the wheels. You could also use a single wheel from wagons centred on the middle of the axle, x 4, one for each crane foot. Thus having the crane running on a single beam of track on ether side. With the wheels just lifting the feet up of the ground by 0.5 to 1mm and all hidden within the foot and the wheel flange keeping the crane on the track for a more prototypical look. Tho in reality each foot would have a inline wheel set of 3 or 4+ per foot, going by photos for stability etc.

I bet the occupant of the manor house never expected to have a loco depot next door. The depot manager will probably have numerous complaints about noise and fumes!
@GrahamFoulston4 жыл бұрын
Les Bird Hi Les, the original owners of the Manor House bought the railway to the area over a hundred years ago, all the land around the Manor House (including the village) was owned by them, they foot the build of the bridges across the lake but the railway was put in by the then current railway owners. This was to bring industry to the area so that the timber and coal could be shipped to Hull and the railway could also take it to London to be shipped to Europe. The now current container yard was once a thriving steam marshalling yard for goods wagons so this new development is a lot cleaner and less noisy than the previous marshalling yard. This is a small price to pay for them to increase the output of their factories and mines they built up and owned. Hope this helps on a little history of Lakeside which was all documented in a video I did about five years ago. Cheers for now mate. ........... Graham
