Russell Benton Many thanks Russel, I certainly put some work into that bus station scene although it may not seem like it but I guess that might be why I think it works, it’s reasonably simple but with many small details which can be overlooked because it’s expected to be there - if that makes sense. I’m very pleased with the building, it’s come out well from the basic shell to what it is now. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

Hi Graham, the bus station and the smooth running bus looks fantastic. The old saying "less is more" is very true, because you see some layouts that are riddled with bits and pieces and they resemble a junk yard. Exciting times ahead with construction of the village and the Magnorail road system. Really enjoyed this video and I`m looking forward to future videos with great anticipation. Cheers Greg

Gregory Hale I so agree with you Greg about less is more but some people just don’t get it. However, as long as I’m happy with what I have done then that’s really all what matters. I have no doubt that I will add little bits and pieces as time goes on but as far as I’m concerned then I think it’s basically finished bar the shouting. Yes, exciting days ahead that’s for sure and I can’t wait to get stuck into designing and building the village, that should prove fun! 👍🏻. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

Hello Graham, I have only been following you for a few weeks but you are an inspiration to this 74 year old. I am really looking forward to your completing the Canal; I am fascinated by your plans and would just like to say, albeit that you probably know this already, that Magnorail now produce an “end-to-end” track that presumably would work with Canal Boats thus overcoming the need to have a “turn-around” at each end. I hope you don’t mind my mentioning this. I am looking forward, almost desperately, for your next Cabal instalment !! With very kind regards and many thanks for making an old man smile in this difficult times.
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Christopher and many thanks for the kind, heart warming comment you posted, it’s greatly appreciated. At 71 then I’m not far behind you sir! 😂. I actually didn’t know about the ‘end to end’ Magnorail system so I am going to have a look into that because if that is the case then it may well be of great use to me for the canal. I had resigned myself to not having moving canal boats via either Magnorail or Faller because of different limitations in both systems but the end to end system does sound interesting. Whatever the outcome then I promise that this section of the layout will prove to be of interest once finished and maybe even before as you will no doubt see videos of me working my way through the build. I feel that I should say at this point that as I smoke then you may occasionally see me having a cigarette from time to time and if you find this offensive then I would fully understand should you not want to view any further videos but it is on only a few occasions that this may happen. Hopefully you will continue to watch and see the gradual progress of Lakeside and indeed the canal/lake taking shape over the next few months and of course the Christmas video too. Cheers for now my friend and stay safe. ...........Graham

Wow, Graham... the road markings really made that area pop to its max now. The new loco is very sharp, too. With the Magnorail bike- it would not really be boring. It is a temporal activity, visitors, youtubers, or you watch and then watch other things, then come back to the cyclists. You can always add more, too. And you will always find a way to make it more interesting and fun than designed. Cheers!

Pennyhill Junction Hi Jamie and thank you. Glad they got the pro`s in with that nice wrecker and dandy light mod, love the village thoughts as for bikes not boring, how many folk when kids would chase each other around blocks for ages, either just racing or playing bike tig etc. Anyway i shall leave you with two words - Simply Epic cheers ken

yorkie pudd Morning Ken and thanks for taking the time and trouble to comment mate - much appreciated. Yes, I think that area is pretty much finished now apart the odd one or two bins as you say. I will make the route for the bikes as interesting as possible with a few tree trunks to avoid on the track at the back of the houses - as long as I can curve the track enough but until I lay the track then I won’t know if that will work or not so we shall see. Adding all that detail just shows what you can do, great no limits in this hobby the choice is yours! The magnorail cartridge is definitely the right thing to do, keeping it in its own stable environment and easier to get get working first. Like the idea of the raised section - a transition between levels - will be interesting to see which way you go. Stephen

Stephen Pike Hi Stephen and thank you for the comment. I have now started on the Magnorail system and have it running albeit in a temporary fashion as I need more track which I have ordered and waiting for it to be delivered but at least it’s a start. This has been done as I suggested as in a cartridge form which is going to make it so much easier to develop without destroying any of the original baseboard. Once I’m happy with it then I can instal it onto the layout. All early days yet but I can already see that it should work out ok. Cheers for now mate. ............Graham

@@GrahamFoulston you built that quickly again! Yes and great to assess visual aspects. I am also interested to see if the magnorail makes much noise and if it detracts in any way, including vibration etc, from the engine sounds. As a cartridge it will be far easier to solve any noise issues (if a nuisance to you) than if built directly into the baseboard. Stephen

It certainly has been a mega build that street scene, but I hope viewers can understand and appreciate the time efforts that go into something so amazing as that :). It came together perfectly and to be honest with the lovely present from Geoff (Tram Junction), the bus station most certainly set the whole lot off. I have seen the working Magnorail from Everard Junction and I think you will be happy with it once you get the setup issues sorted. But enjoy your bike ride with you wife hehehe. Look forward to more :)

Sean Baldwin Hi Sean and thank you, yes the bus station has worked out well for me albeit that I changed it quite a bit from the original kit but I knew I had to do that from the beginning. It gives a great reason to for the buses to turn round at one end of Kingsway - I think of it as a full stop at the end of a sentence. There is a lot of work in that whole street but it’s been worth it as it does give a good backdrop to the main platform and station area with some great areas for shooting video. I have started the Magnorail and have it running albeit in a temporary fashion within its cartridge but I need som more track which I have ordered and it should be with me by mid week with a bit of luck. Cheers for now mate. ............Graham

Dave Horton Yes Dave, I really do need to do a night time video of this area showing the lights in the buildings and bus etc. Like the whole layout then I didn’t want to do anything that made it look over done and end up like the Blackpool illuminations like some layouts I have seen - less is more as they say and that also goes with the signage too, I am getting quite a few comments back saying that I should have a sign for this or that, I could add a lot more signage but that’s not going to happen just for the sake of being correct in the real world for the reasons I said in the video. Hi Graham. Thank you for the video, most inspiring. I've just had a couple of days of model railway hell tbh. I've had major issues with my removable section since adding the higher level and have ended up catching and tearing up 4 sections of track out of 6 while trying to get it to work again. But seeing what you've done has managed to deter me from taking a chainsaw to the entire lot! lol. I think i need to go away and sleep on it for a century or two then come back and sort it out ;) Keep up the good work my friend!

Pwll-Y-Ddraig And that’s exactly what I do too mate when things go belly up - just walk away and when you come back to it then it will normally all look straightforward and you will know what to do. The worst thing is to struggle on as it will only go from bad to worse - just walk away. This has happened to me so many times and I’m not ashamed to say it either, it happens to most of us. I could have thrown that bus out the window so many times as it just would not go right for me, so I put it down and did something completely different - not even in the train room, just something different, it always works. Keep going fella, you will crack it in the end an it will be 10 times better than the previous version. Cheers for now buddy. .........Graham

Hi Graham, just for your information where you have a stop written on the median you should also have a hexagonal stop sign on a post with it for reference to vehicles where the median sign is obscured, just as you have give way lines with a give way sign at a minority junction. Also the broken line beyond the stop writing should be solid.

Indeed even take it a bit further if one is inclined by having a reed contact along the path the bikes ride so you can detect the bicycle and that triggers a car just ahead opening its left door which causes the bicycles to seem to swerve to avoided it (but really following the predetermined path. ). Of course that gets old if it happens every time so finding a way to randomize that and route the path believably is tricky.

anthony new Hi Anthony, in the real world then there would be a height restriction sign but as I said in the video, I didn’t want to overdo the signage, I could put so many other signs up which is my problem, I hate seeing signs which to be frank, state the bleeding obvious. This is just meant to be a small representation of a high street and bus station in model form, having every sign up and road marking on this would in my minds eye ruin it - just my opinion of course but I wouldn’t be happy with it. Hi Graham, nice video as always. I love the Heljan 33, what sound and decoder did you fit, or are going to fit? I used the Leggomanbiffo ESU v5 in my Heljan 27, which you saw when we met last year at Milton Keynes. I assume the real 33 and 27 had very similar sounding engines. I thought your bus having the tyre changed is a brilliant idea. Our tyre man at work when changing tyres on our loaded trailers uses a 25t bottle jack, which is raised using an air line attached to his work truck. One other thing I noticed, the tyre man who is refitting the tyre on the wheel would have an air line and an air socket wrench laying on the floor where he had removed the wheel nuts off the front wheel when he took it off to work on. A small picky thing really but I thought you'd like to know. Looking forward to seeing those cyclists riding through the village, I've seen those on another layout somewhere and they look amazing when finished, another great addition to Lakeside. Anyway, enough from me, regards Dave.

Hi Graham, the bus/coach station looks so realistic. Job well done. I know you said you don't want too many signs, but could I make a suggestion for one more? A sign at the entrance to the bus station saying "NO ENTRY. BUSES, TAXIS AND CYCLISTS EXCEPTED." The village should look really good when it's finished. Can I ask if you received a KZfaq notification for my latest video. Been 12 months since the previous one and I'm not sure if the notifications are still valid. Re the quick delivery of the Magnorail system. that was great service. Less than 48 hours from the continent to the UK! Here in Australia we're lucky if we get mail from interstate in even 48 hours! Sometimes even longer. Even mail from one side of Melbourne to the other can take 2 or 3 days to travel a total of 100km. Keep up the good work. FWIW, I've started to build the station roof canopy. I drew up the design on a CAD program called ProfiCAD at full 1:1 scale for HO. After printing and joining the pages together, it looks bigger then I thought it would The bending of the curves worked well, although not 100% perfect. :) Still, a coat of flat black or grey on them should hide most of the imperfections. I have to build at least 13 canopies spaced at - and this is being pedantic - 52.5mm centres! I am doing a video/s of the construction, so will see how it looks from the other side of the lens. Well I think I have prattled on long enough, so you and Hazel keep safe and well. .... Ian

Hawthorn Valley Hi Ian and thank you for the kind comment. I don’t really want anymore signs, if I add one more then I will end up adding another - and then another, that’s just something I have a thing about, there are too many signs stating the obvious and I’m sure they are only put up for either dumb people or to cover the bums of the local council, hope you understand, I really like the uncluttered look. If this was the real world then it would be covered in signs but it’s a model, a representation of a high street and in this case, a bus station. Yes I did receive your notification but I just haven’t watched it yet along with a host of others I need to watch, even in the evenings I don’t really have a lot of time to just relax and watch KZfaq or the telly and by the time I do stop then I’m too knackered to do much else but I will make the effort to watch you video though. Your canopy roof sounds like a mammoth task, even more work than my bus station from the sounds of it - I wish you luck with that, I bet that’s going to take some time to build! Cheers for now mate and thank you for the kind comment. ............Graham

Hi Graham, thanks for your reply. I appreciate your aversion to more signs. It was just a suggestion, but I take it the council has it all under control and raking in the fines from those who should know better than to enter the area. :-) It looks like I don't have to do anything with notifications on KZfaq uploads. :-) I now have 9 of 13 trusses made. Then I have a few smaller ones to do. Most of the pillars are made and painted. Black square base, equivalent to 1 metre high and heritage green round posts. ... Ian

Your road markings look very neat, but did you check the Traffic Signs Manual as a STOP line is a solid white line across the width of the carriageway for the traffic approaching that line? The yellow box junction markings might also not be in accordance to the manual as well as they do not cover the entire carriageway area in the junction.

That bus station has come together beautifully Graham , the road markings really bring the scene alive , love it . 👍 Just a quick request , what's the name of the Dutch company you used . I'm in France and ordering delays from the UK at the moment are just incredible . Thanks and keep up the good work .

Brilliant as always. Looking forward to the bicyclists making their rounds. Question on the road markings as they apparently be some sort of transfer/adhesive appliqué. Are you concerned about the friction of the guide magnet that runs the road at the front of the bus wearing through the road markings it passes over after some time?
@JamesNagington
@JamesNagington 4 жыл бұрын
Hey i think that would make it look even more realistic as you don't see perfect lines for long once traffic starts going over them. Especially heavy traffic like busses and HGV's the tyres soon scrub through the fresh painted lines lol
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
InterCity-1-3-4 Hi and thank you. No I’m not worries about the marks appearing on the roadway as in fact this would be more representative of a real road and in fact I have already made some tracks from tyres etc using my airbrush. The road markings are all self adhesive vinyl so the should last for quite a long time. Cheers for now mate. ........Graham

The 33 looks great Graham. I wonder where Heljan got photos of a clean one to work from?😂 With the road through the village, I like the idea of raising it a bit. Any variation in height on a layout is good and, like you say, it will make the climb to the bus station less severe. Love the lights on the bus - very cool.👍 Here's a thought though: now that you've got some experience with fitting leds and switches/relays/timers, would there be a way to fit *working* brake lights on the bus? What I'm thinking is: could separate red leds be added at the back, worked via a reed? switch and timed like the actual stop/start of the vehicle? Is that maybe pushing it a bit?😂 I know you like a challenge and the tiny electronics are less of a black art now - could it be done?😂 I'll leave you thinking about that. Cheers for now, Dougie. Oh P.S. Remember, yourself and your good lady will need lights on your pushbikes, if you're going out after dark. Let's see you hide batteries on the bikes !!😂
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
2H80vids Hi Dougie and thank you for the great comment, really appreciate that. I three options available to me for the height of the village and road, flat on the baseboard; a couple of inches higher to clear the motor for the Magnorail and then the same height as Kingsway High Street. I think I know which one I’m going for but I need to design it first and see if I can make it work with everything else around it including the Manor House, lake etc. That should be good fun to design and build! 👍🏻. As for brake lights then the bus is already crammed in with wires, a battery and a switch, the only other way I can do this is to scrap the bus and go to a Faller digital system which is very expensive and not something I’m prepared to do at the moment - “at the moment” being the operative words. Maybe later on when I have progressed a little further on the layout then I may consider it as it does give you a huge amount of control. We’ll see. As for the bikes with lights on then forget it! 😂😂😂. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

@@GrahamFoulston Interesting reply Graham; I hadn't thought of bringing the whole village up to the level of Kingsway. That has all sorts of possibilities. Might make track access a wee bit tricky but nothing that you couldn't overcome. I must research the Faller systems a bit more; I really have no idea how far things have moved on. From your response, it sounds like working brake lights may actually be a "thing", I was really only half-serious when I suggested it.😁 No lights on your pushbikes? Awww !! What about working bells then?😂 Cheers for now, Dougie.

Thank you, I will give you 10/10 I enjoy watching your video. Thank you. From John

John Sawczenko Hi John, you can buy the Magnorail system form here: www.maketis.com/en/84-bike Yes, you can join to kits together but you can also buy track, chain and bikes separately too. I won’t be putting any moving cars in the village but I am looking into buying an N gauge vehicle for the town system which I will convert an OO gauge car - as far as I know then the Faller system do not produce OO/HO gauge cars so I will need to make my own. Cheers for now. ...........Graham

Whilst I agree with testing the magnorail I would advise you to make the gradient on the road first! Otherwise you may make it all fit and then struggle with that gradient! Not criticism just an opinion wouldn’t want you to have to remedy a mistake!

Cheadle Ridge Lane Tmd Hi and thanks for the comment.
