I am a Bulgarian living in the US and I was very happy to find this yogurt in our local grocery store. You can dilute it with cold water, add salt and you have a drink called in Bulgarian айрян. Or you can diluted, dice cucumbers, add dill and garlic and you have a summer soup called Tarator 😃

Bulgarian yogurt is also famous in Japan. It is a national brand that accounts for 30% of the yogurt market in Japan. And it is a genuine "Bulgarian yogurt" whose manufacturing method and trademark are certified by the Bulgarian government.

I have tried Meiji Bulgarian yogurt, which is now produced not only in Japan but also in China and Thailand by the Japanese Meiji corporation. I can attest to the quality-it is indeed a true Bulgarian yogurt. one has to try the unsweetenned natural yogurt though. Unfortunately, in Asia they tend to eat a lot of ultra sweet yogurts and some of the Meiji Bulgarian yogurts are also sweet. China is also producing its own brand of Bulgarian yogurt callee Momchilovtsi. However, it only comes in sweetened versions and it is not as good as Meiji Bulgarian yogurt.

I'm from Bulgaria and y generation was one of the luckiest to grow with home made yogurt. My grandparents had cows and buffaloes so we had home made yogurt, cheese, butter, etc. If you are curious on ways to consume yogurt you can check the meanings of " ayran" and "tarator". The commercial yogurt is different (much more smoother and less sour) from the home made, but still a good option. But probably the best thing I've ever tasted is called "katyk" made from sheep milk. Some of this with pink tomato, or baked red bell pepper and you will never forget it. It makes me so sad that our old values and culture goes behind and will be forgotten so one day I won't be able to tell to my children how a real tomato should taste (my favorite type is buffalo hearth) because now we are having these GMO plastics.

I make my own Bulgarian yogurt, I have an older gentleman and his wife who live around the corner from me who gifted me a lifetime supply of Bulgarian yogurt- a jar of the most delicious, thickest, most decadent lactose free yogurt I’ve ever had 6 months ago, I’ve been OBSESSED ever since! It’s addicting! I make yogurt a gallon at a time at least once a week the ‘traditional way’ (no crockpot). This bacteria is truly a miracle microorganism for the gut! The Greeks can have their philosophers, leave the yogurt to the Bulgarians!

I am also obsessed with it for about the last six months~~it's absolutely delicious. I buy a brand called White Mountain out of Austin, TX (it's organic) and have been wanting to learn how to make it on my own. Did you buy the starter from somewhere? Do you use a yogurt machine or how do you keep it warm enough in your home. Thanks in advance!

Thank you dr. Berg for the great videos. I have been watching for two years now and would have to say your info has improved my life. What you say about bulgarian yogurt is very much on point. I am from Bulgaria and here we call this natural probiotic. Yes, we do give this to our children since they are babies. The best is from the Rhodopi mountain range, as those cows are 100% grass fed with the purest grass, literally. Usually I like to have it for breakfast or sometimes as ayryan which is yoghurt mixed with water and some salt. It is the best. Thanks once again and keep up the good work!

As a bulgarian who has consumed TONS of bulgarian yogurt I thank you for this video. I'm also doing somewhat of a keto diet and I've seen your stance on yogurt being a no-go but I ignored that, the yogurt is irreplaceable for me. One of the worst parts of having to live abroad is that the bulgarian cuisine is gone, the bulgarian yogurt being a major one. Also I recommend to look up tarator and snow white (snezhanka) salad if you wanna get fancy with it.

Well you did mention Greek yogurt,so, as Greek and engineer that works in dairy industry, I have to tell you a couple of things. The traditional yogurt that in our country and other countries close to us consume is different than the one that is exported. Unfortunately your market request products that look better aesthetically but are very altered. Than means that the top layer of fat needs to be gone and probably powder milk needs to be added so it will look better. Not to mention that the traditional yogurt has a life of one maybe two weeks, so it is very difficult for you to try Thanks for your video

As usual your recommendations are JIT. I just received my Bulgarian Yogurt starter culture for raw milk to make my yogurt (I make my own yogurt, kefir, kombucha, kimchi etc.). Seeing that they ferment their yogurt for 30 hours I'll try to do that as well. One recommendation I have for those who make their own yogurt is to keep the whey and add it to smoothie.

I'm fortunate to have 2 brands of Bulgarian yogurt at my local health food store, Trimona and White Mountain. By far, White Mountain is superior (to me!) in terms of taste plus it comes in a fantastic glass jar, the label comes right off and the jar is great for storage. The WM yogurt has a less "gelled" texture. And you don't shake it, just gently stir before serving. SO GOOD!

And doc you can make it yourself. Just warm some good quality whole fat milk till it's 40 degrees Celsius. Mix approx. one tablespoon full of milk with an equal amount of yogurt in a small bowl. Then add the yogurt milk mixture to the rest of the milk (the yogurt will be your starter.). Cover the pot. Then keep it warm. There are several techniques to keep the milk warm but the easiest would be to wrap the pot with table cloth and kitchen towel etc. Keep it like that for at least 8 hours (the longer you keep it wrapped the more tangy will the yogurt get). After at least eight hours unwrap the pot. Put it into the refrigerator. Keep it in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours. And then enjoy. You can always use your own yogurt as starter for the next batch. No need to buy from the groceries. That's how we do it. And one last note. The yogurt will be better if the milk is raw.

The Bulgarian yogurt is worldwide famous exactly because of Lactobacillus Bulgaricus and it's indeed very healthy. This exact brand that is shown in the video doesn't exist in Bulgaria, so I guess it's either for export only, or made by an US company with Bulgarian recipe. Actually everyone can make a home made Bg yogurt, I'm sure there are videos online. The most important is the quality of the milk and the quality of the small amount of yogurt that is used for the preparation. If it has the bacteria, then the product will be good 🙂 As a Bulgarian I thank you for sharing this info with the world 🙂

Being Irish just realised how lucky I am as all our diary and meat comes from grass fed cows you have options of organic or not and we don’t have gmo crops here to my knowledge as far as I know they are banned in EU! I’m not sponsored by the Irish Diary Board or Bord Bia lol 😂

Thank you Dr. Berg! I saw this at the store but was afraid of the 10 carbs. I guess I can have 1/2 a serving at a time.

Hey Doctor, please make a video about Skyr, curious to know your opinion since it sits in the realm of low fat high protein kind of "yogurt".

I made greek yogurt by putting a probiotic pill when making it and I did not strain it at all and it came out thick.

In Greece there are dozens of different types of what you call "Greek yogurt" made from different types of milk and process . A comparison of a specific brand should be done with another brand, not demonizing Greek yogurt now, not by the video of course but the fellow commenters. The fact that this brand dares to do what every brand in dairy industry avoids , that's the point. Hope the rest will follow.

Me a bulgarian eating around 2-3 bulgarian yogurts per day 💪. I really don’t know how to live without it. It’s like eating probiotic for breakfast as then using it to make the musaka taste better. Also to make a tarator and airian. It’s too multifunctional to make anything without it.
