Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited www.narcissistic-abuse.com/faq...
Do I work with a narcissist or psychopath? Are they dangerous? What can I do to deal with them?
Sam Vaknin joins me on today’s Upgraded Ape Show to discuss narcissists and psychopaths in the work place. We start the show by defining these two personality types and we look at the traits of each.
The main difference between narcissists and psychopaths are the fact that psychopaths are totally dependent and do not require other people in their lives. However narcissists need others to feed their addiction to input from the people around them. Both types of people however are emotionless, non sympathetic and “pretty terrifying”.
How Sam became an expert
Next up I ask Sam how he became an expert in this world and a little about his journey from being diagnosed as both a narcissist and psychopath.
“I’ve been diagnosed with both - I’m a narcissists and a psychopath”
Sam explains how when he first started working in this area of psychology personality disorders were a neglected area of research and how things have changed in recent years. This is because narcissists and psychopaths are very difficult patients and so they’re tough to study.
“I would have found it pretty funny if you suggested that something was wrong with me. I’d have thought you were dim witted”
To put this into context I asked Sam how he went about getting a diagnosis in the first place and both times he was “coerced” into getting a diagnosis. Studies back this up in that most people who suffer from these conditions do not even know that they have them and so it’s likely more common than you would think.
Were do we meet narcissists and psychopaths?
Next Sam explains that narcissists and psychopaths are often found near the top of the corporate ladder, in show business and even in the clergy - basically roles where they have power and influence over others. There are many reasons for this including the fact that western culture actually rewards narcissistic and psychopathic behavior by pushing you to get to the top, to show off your gold chains in music videos and to idolize celebrities who constantly crave attention.
Interestingly narcissists and psychopaths don’t always have to be in the top position, if they can’t get their they can still get the attention needed by being slave like to those in the positions they would like and because of this they are found all over the corporate structure.
Are there benefits to having in your company?
I ask Sam if someone with these personally traits could actually be good for business. If they’re willing to do anything for the attention then perhaps they will work harder and longer than anyone else to get into a position where they can gain more attention which could be good for a teams productivity.
“Pathological narcissism is never, ever good for business”
Sam explains his opinion that “pathological narcissism is never, ever good for business” isn’t agreed with by many scholars who believe that these disorders can be used for good but then goes on to tell us why he firmly believes it.
How do you deal with them?
We wrap up the show by learning how to deal with people who are claiming your work is theirs, who you feel are manipulating you in the work environment and who you’ve recognized the traits of a narcissist or psychopath.
We talk about ways to give yourself leverage in the situation so that you’re controlling their reality and they have less opportunity to be able to manipulate you.

They try to break every boundary of another person. I wonder how someone can be that much shameless to forcefully interfere in another person's life with whom he has no relation.

This is why I became very sick after 30+ years of working. I couldn't handle the cruelty and narcissistic behaviour of so many people. Im not the type of person who can just "fake it" and pretend everything is OK because that goes against everything I stand for. After years of repeated exposure to super-shitty humans my immune system broke down but thats actually good because I don't have to be around them anymore. Unfortunately, though, I now have flashbacks to all those moments in which people tried to humiliate me or damage me in some way which is really tough to untangle. Its called complex ptsd and it can actually happen from being excessively bullied for long periods.

I'm there as well. I cannot afford to lose my job where I'm supposed to work very closely with the narc boss. I've started gray-rocking and keeping contact to a minimum. It's still not a healthy situation and I'm not looking forward to the inevitable PTSD. I'm beginning to quietly explore other employment options before she completely destroys my credibility. She's just an awful, awful person. Karma will take care of her someday....

You are spot on. Remember to take some long walks in the nature. There are also alot of good people around. Even though you have had this experience you are not alone. I know how hard it feels. omg. I have been with a girlfirend who was like that. Her mother told be what she was and i understood right away. I left her after 2 years and blocked everything, thank God. A colleague of mine in which are dating my sister offered me a job after i left my other job to follow my dreams and he already started the first week by talking down to me, which was oookay, because i WAS a little slow and not so good as him to begin with, you know. After i got alot better and my boss told him. He really started getting on my nerves. Manipulating it all and i even tested him just to be sure, when a customer walked right out in front of him and he exposed himself to her, lol. You should have seen her angry face. Should not have done that, but it was really nice to see somebody else actually see and hear, what i have been dealing with over the time. Then he started getting really revengeful. He said. You will never be as good as me and so on. One day i just had enough. My body started reacting and my mind was tired and told him. Im gonna tell my sister the truth about you. Then he came with some serious threats about what would happend if my sister left him. Then i told my sister and my mother. Guess what happend. Lost my sister to a narc she has known for 3 years and i lost my job during the winter break here. My Boss said he would call me again after the Winter break, because he was so happy with me. Now i cannot even get trought to him. That is how narcissists work. He even made faces off me at my mother and fathers house and just sat there eating and just smiled behind their back, like haha i won, they will never believe you. oh Man! I got really pissed and my body just trembled. Then i got really sad you know. They manipulate everyone around them emotional you see, so people think it is their own thoughts. They completly try to destroy reason in people, so people will be or become like them. Because how dare you expose them! They have a skill in persuasion those covert narcs. I think they are the most dangerous ones on peoples mental health. Just run. They have no Soul. Dont look back. Look forward. Start over. You can do that every day, but they cannot. They will always be trapped in their own s h i t!

Thats because not all of these people are psychopaths or narcissists. There are many, many people in this world who are just stupid and lack self awareness. They don't even care about becoming self-aware but rather their main priority is to make it so things go their way. They can be childish, temperamental, petty and vindictive because they never emotionally matured, likely due to trauma in childhood. Some people, regardless of what their childhood was like are just assholes who only care about themselves and they think this is reasonable. Unfortunately these types of people often seem to be popular, fun to be around and often quite successful. Other times they are drawn to dogmatic thinking (hyper religious or part of hate-groups) which means that they thrive on believing that they are better than everyone who doesn't subscribe to their beliefs.

@@LadyAthena338 Lol! I have been to therapy, retreats, workshops, etc. I realized for myself that I was born into it. Sometimes we are born in the fire. But it doesn't mean we have to stay and get burned. Everybody's path is different and a lot of people excuse narcissistic behavior from others, so they won't be able to see what you see or understand the depth of how it affects you (us). But you are not the only one. You're just the minority who is tuned in and working to get out. 🙌🏾

We took this "Five Voices of Leadership" training seminar at work. It involves a "personality quiz" of sorts where you are told your "unique leadership style". The malignant narcissist at work got "The Connector" as their style. I remember thinking, "Yeah. That tracks. 100%".

They are very sick people, so don't stand up for yourself which I did and now they are like flies on shit. It's getting to the point I want to speak with the media about it.

I keep wondering why this is always presented as an individual problem and not an organizational or leadership issue. Why are organizational leaders not trained and prompted to deal with these people at work? Why is it always up to the individual strength of the victims to deal with this? Has it not been shown these characters are bad for organizations?

You would think that with all the information currently available books and videos yes there is a huge load of publications on this but management everywhere seem to be completely void on it or how to proceed with issues and people like this, or it could simply be the fear of future retaliation, threats, the use of social media to further destroy and innocent person it's crazy, however many organizations could simply buy a special software program and have current and new employees fill it out this will accurately tella hiring manager who and what that person is about, but then again it may be against the law to impose or even ask a current or new employee to do so.

I asked myself the same question. There's a stigma around all of those isms; and management cannot afford the consequences of morality versus morale because it's a conflict of interest if it doesn't benefit their business. The best management can offer is de-escalating techniques because the alternative is too much like demanding the type of conformity that can stagnate the kind creativity and innovation that drives our economy. Plus, the powers to be want US to feel free to express our freedoms and individuality. Narcissists and psychopaths have the freedom to be themselves. Their targets also have the right to fight back. God's glory will always outshine the Devil's dealings. Pick your side; and pick your battles. Just remember: No man can serve two masters. And no man is an island. Management do pay attention to their money makers who bring in longterm value to the business.

@@gregoryforrest8970 as Sam says one could not rely on accurate self reporting, combined with skills of narcissists that make it possible for them to give the answer that is required. They most likely will bullshit and virtue signal all the way through such a test, giving the answers that society may find acceptable. I have worked with a right wing violent and threatening narcissist and it was sadly with some trauma to myself that I came to know exactly how she worked.

Most coworkers are nice to my face at first when i first started working and i thought i was going to make awesome co-worker friends a year later most of them avoid me like the plague...it took one person to accomplish this to convince a group that I was the crazy malicious one and the false rumor spreading was horrible Most co-workers started bullying me using verbal language..papers slammed on my desk...and alone at lunch time i would hear my name being called out, and the group would make some sort of mockery out of me What i used to call " friends" are now turning against me and i feel so alone and outcasted

I agree, with years of experience dealing with varying degrees of narcissist bosses in the financial services industry, I can vouch that the best approach to handling such a boss is to tell them what they want to hear: that they are all powerful and all knowing. In some cases you need to tell them others are afraid of them or jealous of them, that they alone deserve all the power and position that is their right to have. In one case, I spent all of my working day in her office, watching her perform all day, repeating the same victory stories again and again. I did no work, there was nothing to do really. One time she raged out in front of another manager, then I got moved out from under her. Didn't lose her job by any means. In fact, she is still there, moved up several levels from when I was there.

Exotic Gawdess I knew three people, two at work and one at college, who I believed were psychopathic. If talking was an Olympic sport, they'd win gold medals. If you stood my co-worker in a field, he'd argue all day about the colour of the grass. I tend to find the real trigger for psychopaths is when they have to do something tangible or deal with reality. That is when they reveal their true colours, the anger, the egoism, the arrogance, the laziness , the fecklessness and passing the buck. When I told other employees about his bad temper they'd look at me as if to say, "Are you talking about the same person?". For the record, I quit in the end.

gedhession "When I told other employees about his bad temper they'd look at me as if to say, "Are you talking about the same person?" Yep, been there for sure. I found the worst places to work were dept stores (hated those places, but needed a job). The worst possible people work there, and when there is "no work" (which is bs as there is always work) people idle there way into your space to gossip about others. It used to piss me off. I don't work in these places anymore, found better work.

I think your work helped me alot with getting around with that type of people because I work close with bosses of companies. And you can find that not only they are narcissist but people around them are also esspecialy the "Yes Men". Many times I would losse a contract for even making valid criticism and think why I did wrong.. But now working with them is kinda good thanks to your advices . If you leave your ego aside you can make a good deal. Even If I develop a great Idea for their company I will turn it around and make it seem like that idea is thanks to their boss .. Soo now the boss i happy and the Yes Men bellow him can't say nothing against it .
