I feel like this is a great ending for the season because it's a huge shift in Mizu's quest. At the beginning, her sole desire is revenge. But this decision to go to London, to spare Fowler, indicates a new desire, a new quest. She wants answers. She wants to understand her own history. And that's a quest with a future, rather than the revenge quest, which has none. It opens the possibility of reconciling with her place in the world, rather than simply cursing it. Revenge shuts the door, while potentially, self-knowledge could open it.

@@vinsanity40k You may be right, but thus far, the writing has been pretty twisty. Nothing has been that predictable. So it seems like just ending the revenge quest with a final revenge killing may not be where it's going.

Because of the many Earthquakes and Tsunamis in Japan, stone buildings in Japan didn’t really exist. Yes they burned down, but also can be rebuilt quickly. Also they withstood earthquakes much better, with some temples standing for hundreds of years and surviving dozens of strong earthquakes.

Mizu's shirt is her kimono from childhood. It fits as a shirt now because she's not a kid anymore. And Arcane ended on a complete note, the story was the origin of Jinx, and at the end, she chose to be Jinx over Powder with the pulling of the trigger.
@midnight1672

Agreed about Arcane. While there were a great many of loose threads at the end of the season, the arc that it was about was neatly finished. They somehow managed to both - finish the story they meant to tell while also leaving so many further stories to tell for future seasons or maybe even entirely new shows. I imagine they could do something similar to the Marvel universe where they have many different shows all set in the same universe but with different heroes as their main protagonists but instead of heroes they're centered around the different areas. E.g. like Arcane being set in Piltover/Zaun others could be about the Freljord or Shurima and mainly feature the champions local to those places with the occasional crossovers where they make sense. There's easily enough source material if they get the manpower to pull it off.

Finally, other people who think that Arcane's first season had a perfect series ending. I agree that the season expertly concluded the story that it was telling, as well as the arcs of all of the characters of the show. Sure, there are questions unanswered, but it's really all epilogue that doesn't change anything.

One thing to note is that the Japanese were very adept in the use of firearms prior to the time of the show. But as part of the reforms enacted by the Shogunate after 1603, the production and use of firearms was severely restricted, even before the country was closed to westerners entirely. Additionally, Japan had been at peace for more than half a century, so when Fowler rocks up with an army that's been drilling with advanced firearms, the Shogun's forces are doubly unprepared to deal with it.

Crazy that she’s sailing to London in the 1600’s lol. Just comparing that to Shogun and the real life man that Blackthorn is based on. It took them 18 months to sail from Holland to Japan, going down around the tip of South America and up past Hawaii. Three ships departed, only one made it. And on that ship, 20 of the 100 aboard survived the voyage. So will she sail east and retrace that route, or go west via China or India and the Silk Road? Maybe sail the entire way down around Africa? Like… fuck. Just getting to London itself is a virtual suicide mission at this point in history. Curious to see is the next season is just about that journey and all the shit she gets into along the way, closing out the season with her arrival in London a year or so later lol. Or if they skip it and just plop her there at the start… a year or so later lol.
@mwill8248
@mwill8248 3 ай бұрын
Theoretically you could get there in 4-6 months - English clipper ships were doing that sometime in the next 100 years. But here's the thing that destroys it for me, how does she explain Fowler to the crew? He's rich, he probably speaks their language and she doesn't. She also has no way to explain his crime or her authority over him. She'd wind up imprisoned and Fowler would be freed almost immediately
@HeliRy
@HeliRy 3 ай бұрын
@@mwill8248 Hmmm… good point. Hadn’t thought of that. The story will have to have it that’s she’s not the first Japanese person in England. There will be emissaries of some sort. Fowler only got those guns into Japan because the crown gave him a green light to the attempted coup. Which again begs the question… he’s likely even more powerful and well connected on his home turf. So what’s she going to do when she arrives with him in chains? The authorities won’t give a damned lol. Will be interesting for sure!

Maybe they have some way of writing themselves out of this in Season 2, I think it's going to be really hard. Here's another way to look at it - William Adams, the character John Blackthorne (Shogun) was based on was fluent in 4 languages and serving as an officer in a foreign navy when he arrived in Japan. At that point, he's on the far right of the spectrum of culturally adaptable people and it makes it much more likely he'd succeed in adapting to Japan. Mizu is one of the most Xenophobic characters in fiction who has barely seen a big Japanese city and knows almost nothing about foreigners beyond that she wants to kill the one that's her father... that's a different starting point. I honestly don't know how she's going to be at all effective unless Fowler decides to help her a lot for some reason (maybe he hates her father?)@@HeliRy

My S2 prediction is that Mizu and Fowler take the Silk Road to India where she finds another one of the white devils set up as a king and she plots to kill him. S3 Mizu makes it to London, finds out her real mother has been alive and held captive all this time, and takes out the “last” of the white devils. Somewhere either in S2 or beginning of S3 Fowler escapes and goes back to Japan and sets himself up as the BBEG of the series. The show ends with their fight to the death. As for the Great Fire, the Japanese built their castles on top of the highest hills in a given region, the castles were then eight stories high and at the very tippy tops they placed two three foot tall fish sculptures made of iron… biggest lightning rod in the region. Osaka Castle burned down twice before they figured out not to make the fish sculptures out of metal. And Nerdy, I hope you realize you just accepted a spot on Squid Games😂

I LOVED the discussion you had after the episode, talking about how mean and negative people are/have been/can be. Because I agree, people can be awful, the internet can be awful. There’s so much cruelty out there. It’s hard to watch. So, on that note, can I make a suggestion?? Maybe……stop contributing to that and don’t end your videos telling people to leave mean comments for the “algorithm goddess”. I mean less than ten minutes prior to that, Clarus said how many of us could go five days without leaving a mean comment. Don’t you think, just maybe, the way you end your videos just might be contributing to that?? Possibly? Just a thought. Just something to consider.

Probably my least favorite episode of the series, but still some incredible badass moments. The idea that the Shogun’s forces wouldn’t have guns or know how to defend against them kinda takes me out of it, since Japan had them for century at this point. And there was a little too much reliance on deus ex machina style last minute saves in one episode for me. But despite that, it’s a really solid show with beautiful animation and memorable chat and great lines. Enjoyed your reactions.

Honestly I think the only major weakness of this season is Fowler. He's just such a snidely whiplash villain, it makes him as a character pretty uninteresting. He's still an effective threat for Mizu so he works mechanically for the plot, but as a character he's just incredibly bland compared to all the other characters. Arcane's ending was definitely substantially strong than this. While there were many plot threads that were setup to continue, S1 of that show could still standalone if it had to with the ending itself playing perfectly into it's theme of unfettered consequences. The show itself is a modern greek tragedy and the finale is effectively the culmination of all the different characters conflicting motivations and choices getting in the way of fixing any of the systemic failures that created the situation to begin with.

The one thing I hate here is the perpetuated myth that Samurai hated guns which is simply BS. In the 16th century Japanese armies had the highest rate of firearms outside Europe. None would be impressed by Fowler nor recoil at guns or not know what to do. The Shogunate retained firearm arsenals throughout its rule, what they did was remove them from the other warlords. It went too hard on West evil when Samurai Japan was not a doe-eyed naive empire when it came to this at all. They just left Korea after too massive invasions just decades before.

They did mention Japanese firearms in episode 1. Keep in mind the show takes place in the edo period at 17th century. Though to their inefficiency compared to blades at the time and the peacefulness of the era, their use was rare (and less common compared to the 16th century).

The whole guns as a new thing and so devastating to samurai, is the only thing this show gets wrong. The Japanese had more guns at this time period than Europe did. This is near the end of the Sengoku Jidai, the hundred years of civil war that had raged in Japan. They had thousands of guns and were well versed in how to use them and defend against them. It is the only real blemish this show has.

I'm sure it's not the only inaccuracy in the show. But that stuff just doesn't matter for a story like this. Historical recreation isn't the point of the show, it's just the background. It's the concept of extremist isolation meeting extremist invasion that they were getting at.
@Mirhaus
@Mirhaus 3 ай бұрын
It's best to think of the show's history as being alternative universe rather than a historical recreation, allowing for enough room to tweak things for the sake of the story that the writers want to tell. I'm sure the "4 white men in the whole of Japan" is also a bit of creative liberty to allow for Mizu's revenge quest to play out the way it does, rather than bringing up the nebulous amount of Dutch traders who would've historically operated in Japan at that time.

My big question for future series is who is Mizus mother??? The surprise with which Fowler said little miss is that you? It seemed he knew of her existence which seems odd as he merely killed off any other prodigy. The fact that the mother we saw was her maid & that for some reason one of them killed her mother. I e heard theories that her mother is white but that makes no sense, I’m wondering if her mother was someone of importance. I mean it seems odd that they would go to so much effort to find her as is hinted throughout the show, albeit subtly
@Mirhaus

@@tarshnottrash1483I'm curious about her parentage as well. May I inquire why her mother being white makes no sense though? It's a thought that's gone through my own head as well, mainly because the show focuses on there having been four white *men* in Japan at the time of Mizu's birth, which sounds like a textbook setup for a subversion of expectations.

@@Mirhaus simply if her father is white & her mother she can not be halfbred. Unless for some reason they declare her father was actually Japanese. The odds of her even having blue eyes if her mother was pure Japanese is actually almost impossible, which is the only indication maybe her mother is also mixed race. Start to finish I really enjoyed the character arcs in this story. Many characters have shades of grey or complicated personalities. The story didn't have resolutions that I expected.. But I still felt satisfied at the end. On a side note it was around this period that Japan did wall it self off from the world until mid 1800s when usa navy was told to open trade and use force if they had to, and then again until ww2 they were still fairly isolationist.

I loved the season, but have a real problem with the ending. I would have found a UFO coming down to transport Mizu to London to be equally as likely as Mizu getting on a ship to go to London with Fowler as a prisoner. No one else is shown on the ship, because it makes no sense. Who is sailing that ship? The Tokugawa Shogunate built ships and went as far as Europe 20-30 years before, but all of that was shut down around 1635. There are no Japanese ships, so it's a European ship where Mizu has paid for passage and they don't mind the rich guy (who probably speaks their language and she doesn't) being kept prisoner in hold? This is going to be a 4+ month journey. This triggered my bigger problem. You had a clean theme: Mizu is treated as a monster for her half blood status because of the Xenophobia, Racism and Misogyny of Feudal Japan, which was among the worst in all of those categories in human history. She learns to rise above the hatreds of her culture and forgive herself by forgiving her Father for having given her life. All that feels really mushy from S1E8 and I start to get whiffs of approval for what is effectively Japanese fascism at this stage and I don't like it.
