Baki is less about "honorable fightings" and more about how fights are about either taking advantage of the opponent or blatantly making a fight unfair as a legitimate tactic, while examining the quirks of fight psychology and the idea of a man. Which means the whole manga and show is batshit crazy, of course.

You need to see "Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi" is a martial arts anime, it was the first martial arts anime I watched as a child.

This series is amazing, I've always loved the ones that take certain aspects of life to a logical extreme, seen here with these people who, I am not kidding, can remove all layers of skin with a single slap (Baki vs Sikorsky and Yanagi), and can shadowbox so hard the air creates a ghost of Mike Tyson to punch back. Another thing I've found which has little note in reactions, is that you can actually tell if a character has intent to kill or not, by the color of the glow in their eyes and their impact frames. Red means bloodlust. I would personally recommend Baki vs Sikorski and Yanagi, Baki vs Shunsei, and Yujiro vs Kaku Kaioh, if you'd like to see their approach to martial arts logic.

Grappler in the Baki verse means someone that strives to be the strongest. I dont think grappling as a concept was a concept during Itagakis formative years, when he wrote Doppo vs Shibukawa was Open fist (grappler) vs Closed fist (striker), Itagaki is written from the perspective of someone who saw the birth of modern mma and martial arts, but still abides by more traditional notion, and why Ali is such a big deal. Nice reaction!

The old Grappler Baki anime establishes that the franchise defines a grappler as someone who wants to be the strongest fighter. Maybe a bit of a translation error, but I think that’s what the franchise thinks Baki the Grappler. He is mostly a striker, sadly. I wish we saw more wrestling, judo, and jiujitsu from him.

the first knockdown is pretty much telling that jr. just cant imagine that someone that doesnt box can be faster then him in the standing game. it does not want to show that baki is the better boxer, just that there is much more to mma. you can practice 20 years as a boxer, but someone that specializes in nothing in particular can still be faster then you. jr. tryes to predict and read baki just by his boxing knowledeg and nothing else. the main topic around ali jr. in baki is that he cant think outside the box, and thats why he gets left behind.

Sure, Baki is Grappler but he's also a Kickboxer. As for Muhammad Alai Jr, well, he just didn't come fully prepared for this fight. He just doesn't have the mental fortitude he would need to win something like this.

Baki doesn't fight for titles or honors. Junior had been training as a boxer. And by Queensberry Marcheses rules, certain moves are not allowed. On the other hand for Baki everything a human is capable of, is necessary to win.

Even though he is called Baki the Grappler I think it's a bit of a mistranslation/misuse of the word I think. It's more like Baki the fighter is what they meant. If anything I'd say kicks are Baki's main weapon. But he uses a large variety of attacks of course.
