In 2017 I drove from Salerno to Amalfi. I will never forget how stressful it was. But I sure don't regret it because Amalfi coast is to me one of the most beautiful scenery on earth.

I'm a bus driver since many years and I know the Amalfi Coast very well... My first trip was some 20 years ago, with much much more bus and tourisme (was still the Lira, no EUR), still NO help from anyone, still foreigner bus 12m allowed, still no booking system in Amalfi for Parking. I remember very well that in some part of the coast you really need to pray that no bus and especially no camper or motorhome will come in the opposite direction. Not only but no wild car was parked. The HIT: I drove once along the Amalfi Coast on 25. April (Liberation Day). You should know that at such days italian go abroad in mass. From Amalfi to Vietri sul mare (some 20 Km) I took round 6 (six!) hours to drive... non stop concentration... Crazy! Never ever again on such days!

On one of my bus rides over there, I was the last one to get on the bus after I sneaked through the crowd. I was traveling alone so the bus driver let me in, but I had to stand at the entrance stairs. The drive back to Sorrento left me extremely tired from having to hang on and keep my balance. But I had an amazing frontal view and very close up to everything that was happening along the ride. Those drivers have insane skill.

I am an expat/immigrant living in Italy, Rome, and l’ive bought a nice brand new Audi which was a very considerable expense for me personally, and thought what’s the best way to try it on a vacation to the Amalfi coast, I was literally sweating and thought never ever again. Everything went for the best, no scratches. Absolutely beautiful place btw.

For new viewers: there are laws that busses are not allow to use these street, tourist busses are allow to ONLY from Sorrento to Vietri; Mon-Fri bus are banned with the length >10.36 meters; Sat-Sun >8 meters Only busses allow to go in both directions are line busses

bring back memories from my road trip back in 2010 there , rented a Fiat Punto from Rome , drove to Positano , you will not believe how many time we scream in terror when we see them hurling down the road at our little Fiat , but some how they squeeze by us with couple inches to spare each time , one guy even have his phone in one hand while passing us , after my trip , i have the ulmost respect for the italian driving skill , they are the best in the world !!!

Excellent! Brings back fond memories of holidays in that area years ago. The SITA bus drivers are brilliant at what they do.

I went to Amalfi by bus once and two girls a row behind me threw up mid-drive because the curves and the traffic jam was so bad. I also got quite motion sick too. Big props to those bus drivers for driving such routes multiple times a day! It takes some immense skill and nerve to bring a bus full of people safely through there.

I was blessed to spend a few days in Maiori in October 2010. Taking the local buses through Amalfi and over to Sorrento was a big highlight of my Italian trip. I even walked in the morning between Maiori and Minori . The roads were incredibly narrow but of course the traffic was at a crawl and there was so much to see.

Took this trip about 25 years ago. There were two teenage boys at the front of the bus who decided to count the curves. We didn't get very far into the trip before they had to stop counting in order to take a puke break.

These motorcycles would drive me crazy, cutting in and out of traffic.

now imagine an emergency vehicle which want to get through there quickly ...

Took the bus from Salerno to Amalfi and back. I was amazed at the skill of the drivers. Particularly at night

This was just weird to watch… I am impressed over the skills and patience to those drivers.

When I was on a bus to Positano, we all gave our driver a round of applause when he managed a hair-pin turn. Even the mini car ahead of us needed a 3-point turn to manage it.

Memories. This video takes less time than the stoppage our bus experienced. It was caused by a workman's parked mini truck (Ape, in Italian, bee in English, a cousin of a Vespa (wasp). An amazing ride. Beautiful and heart-stopping.

We were on one of those tour bus, the bus driver was amazing & how scare we were. Love our experience in Italy trip.

I was just watching vids on serial killers and now I'm watching coaches in traffic. The algorithm.

Have done that trip several times, both public and tour buses. It's an adventure,, the traffic, the kids on motos , the houses clinging to the cliff faces. Certainly the first time was a heart stopper.

They actually do tried putting some traffic lights, it didn't go well. Ridiculously long waiting times ended up making an even worse traffic queue, not mentioning those who ignores the red light, 2 months ago a 17 yo girl died because of them

Took some years and a few journeys along Amalfi Drive before we discovered the SITA buses - wonderful service, wonderful drivers.

I acquired dual citizenship and now live in Florence, Italy. I marvel constantly at the ability of the bus drivers here maneuvering the ancient small streets. I also love how the Italians are pretty fearless and fairly aggressive drivers who have no qualms about laying on their horns (how I drove in U.S.) - unlike American drivers who tend to be defensive drivers who only use their horns as a last resort. BUT I have to say Italian drivers are LOUSY AT PARKING!!! They'll drive up on a curb, invent parking spaces, pay no attention to painted lines in designated spaces, and couldn't 3 point parallel park to save their lives.

This must be so frustrating as a bus driver, especially when the people on the bikes just don't give a crap and will squeeze through any gap.

Sometimes there is only a few inches between the buses. I have been on them a 100 times over the past 40 years, and I love it. I am 75 now, and I still love to ride them on Amalfi Coast. Sometimes two or three times a day going from Positano to Amalfi or to Priano.

I was there in the early 80ies (by bus, as a tourist) and I was surprised: absolutly nothing has changed...

I used to drive on the Amalfi drive in the early 60's on my motorcycle and at that time there was no traffic control. There were parabolic mirrors on the walls of the switchbacks so you could see oncoming traffic. Cars were a problem, but the busses were crazy, Thay didn't care if they ran you off the road or not. Crazy place.

Its not only Amalfi. Go to Madeira Island. Its full of narrow roads, full of curves, some next to cliffs and with inclination... i admire those bus drivers... many times pass by an inch. An honest opinion from a person who lives in Madeira and who has spent some time in Amalfi coast.

Has anyone every considered introducing a one way system or perhaps smaller buses?In one small village I’ve worked in there’s an unofficial ‘large vehicle’ agreement where drivers (where possible) travel inbound from main arterial routes from one direction during mornings only, and outbound towards main arterial routes in the afternoons. Some very skilled drivers here in Italy. 🙏

I was Driving on Amalfi Coast 2 years ago with my car... It was so hard! Hardest drive in my life! I had to be very accurate while driving, i had to focus every second at driving to not crashes to other bus or car...after all day of driving, in the afternoon and in the night when i came back to the hotel...damn! I was so tired! Next day i went to Amalfi with BUS :D Bus driver there are quite good! Because they have to focus all day while driving and it's very hard to do.

Been a passenger on Elite coaches. No one shouts or loses their temper. Fantastic drivers on all those buses.

Imagine living just above or below this road and hearing traffic, horns and shouting all day. Beautiful place though.

As a child on holiday in the 1970s I rode a coach from Sorrento to Amalfi. The back seats overhung the edge on some bends. The Italians loved kids and I recall being given a China donkey when my father purchased cini film for his camera. Funny what you remember.

I drove from Rome to Pompeii and then to amalfi, this road in this video is MENTAL! Every corner there was a bus flying around and everytime I felt like the car was about to go off the edge. The view when arriving at the bottom was worth it though

IMO Italia should be the place where everyone has to do his driving license and then go back to whatever country you came from. Because if you can drive in Italy then you can drive anywhere.

I remember the Salerno to Positano road by bus in 1957/8 when my parents holidayed there from the UK.

Oh , how I miss Amalfi. So much. My parents are there. Lucky them

it blows my mind how the motorcyclists will ignorantly shove themselves anywhere they will fit without caring out the rest of the traffic, making everything harder and more dangerous. none of them were even wearing proper protective equipment. i understand it might be hot but you're going to lose your skin if you come off your bike in a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops. cover your skin, if it can't be with leather, at least still cover it to give you a fighting chance.

As a child I was taken by bus to Porto Fino in the 1960s. I suspect the only reason I am still alive is because there was a little statue of the Madonna fixed to the dashboard. The driver was like all Italians behind the wheel in those days - trying to be like Fangio.

I was in Amalfi a few years ago and our tour bus got stuck under a resident’s balcony, as another bus was coming in the opposite direction. They had to deflate the bus’ tires to get it out from under the balcony. It was quite the experience. 😂😂😂

From moped, scooter, mx, big bike, Motorcycle rider are the same everywhere. 😂

I could have gone to Italy to do some tourism, but if I ended up in an accommodation with such views, I would spend the whole week on the balcony.

I am a bus driver but I wouldn't want to drive in the amalfi coast but what a memory visiting sorrento positano then to capri fabulous views waiting for A boat to take from capri to positano for what I can remember two boats passing each other caught the rear of one of the boats A trip of a lifetime?

このような道路が細い部分がアマルフィにどのくらいあるのか知らないけど、信号付けて片側交互通行にすれば解決する問題だと思うのだけれど。渋滞の上すれ違いで事故起こすより信号待ちする方がよっぽど気が楽なのでは？

Almost nobody know that since 2013 bus are limited to 10.36m and in 2018 during weekend even to 8m. The 10.36m limitation was clearly done for NOT allow foreigner bus company to drive as all tour bus are 13/14m and only few 12m. By doing so, local mafia controle the tourisme and they are only few local operator offering the coast trip to very expensive tarif (cartel). In addition touristic bus are allow to drive in one direction only (which make sense), from Sorrento to Vietri. The only bus allow to drive in the opposite direction are regular linebus and when it come to cross, they lead the crossing giving the indication need. But one of the unsolved biggest problem on the Amalfi Coast, are motorhome and big camper. Driver are mostly pensionist with very low driveskill. Not only but as they are no limitation of the direction and some of them drive from Vietri to Sorrento and of course it's a nightmare.

This road needs to be designated as a one-way road.

In Korea, general tourist traffic is prohibited in such places and only designated shuttle buses are operated. Those tourists must park in a designated parking lot outside the town. Hahoe Village in Andong, a World Heritage Site, is an example.

Italians have a high efficiency of working. Ever worked with a few Italians in Newark/New York.

They should install traffic lights at either end of this stretch of road .
