Fencing Wire is a useful tool to carry in your 4x4 while travelling. It can aid in bush repairs where alternatives are scarce. Carrying fencing wire and fencing pliers are a must have for remote touring repairs.
There are three tensile types of fencing wire, soft, medium and high. High tensile has the higest breaking strain but the most difficult to bend and manipulate. With Soft tensile the easiest to bend to your requirements, but a lower breaking strain. Choose a medium for a good all rounder suitable for most repairs. Whatever you have access to, at least carry a few meters with you for emergency repairs.

An old bushman's tip : With your roll of wire, bend over and loop the end of the wire to stop it springing out and stabbing your skin or eyes. Not such a big deal with a small roll but with a full size roll it is important. Just bend the tip back a couple of inches until the end meets the wire again. No more snags or stabbing injuries. It also means you can find the end of the wire easily. The best wire for vehicular use is (as you say), 10 gauge soft fencing wire. That's 3.25mm. It allows movement and vibration which is good in a repair. High tensile is a nightmare and is too stiff to connect parts which are vibrating. Best to buy Australian made Waratah brand wire. And here's a tip out of left field : If you carry Donaldson fencing strainers you can use them as a "winch" to pull bent exhausts back into position. Or to pull a chassis rail or itinerant axle housing back into position. It's good to know how to do a Cobb and Co Twitch too. Very useful for vehicular repairs and for building fences. Cheers.

In Wyoming, we call that bailing wire. Good stuff to have handy. Ah, fencing pliers I've used have a hammer side and a horn, and a special hooked section to twist wire. But those are good pliers. In the US we call those Lineman pliers.

Great clip mate thanks. I find 2.5 or 3.15mm soft tensile wire handy for bush repairs. Waratah fencing in Australia make a range of smaller coils of wire called “Farmers Friend Tire Wire” ordered through rural merchandise outlets.

smaller coils are always handy.. from my research it seemed I'd have to order 1000m or more of fencing wire.. a bit costly when I only need a few meters.

I remember Exercise Kangaroo 95. We packed up in Weipa and drove back to Townsville. The corrugation rattled the air cleaner hose off a defender 110. I use some fencing wire to tie the bits back together. Bit strange for an officer fixing a car for a grunt, but thats what you do to keep the convoy packet moving!

I remember replacing a broken clutch linkage in an old HQ with a length of fencing wire cut from a cockies fence. Used a screw driver to twist and tension it. The cocky must have been scratching his head trying to work out why someone would steal two foot of his fence.

some time ago I had suggested long, fully threaded bolts and loading them up with nuts and washers. Please consider revisiting that. You could even buy some lengths of threaded rod with nuts and washers on it, and store it under the hood at the sides.

Many years ago in a ford cortina the alternator fell off, so we tied it on with fencing wire. Always wondered if that farmers cattle notice half the fence missing ;-)

Brett with that particular bracket could a couple of decent sized zip ties of helped as well? Doesnt seem to be on any hot areas? Cheers
@RoamingTheOutback
@RoamingTheOutback 4 жыл бұрын
possibly yes.. though as I've found with my rear mudflap repairs, even the largest zip ties snap pretty quick where there is movement. A muffler has a bit of strain attached to it and constantly flexing with the chassis mounts. May not be strong enough to last the whole track onwards.
@BenMitro
@BenMitro 4 жыл бұрын
Cables ties may or may not last to the end of the day, fencing wire will outlast the vehicle in this scenario IMHO.

You can and should always take Stainless Steel zip ties (yes they are a thing, Bunnings sells them as well), the strongest ones can hold 250Kg I think it was.

If you can't fix it with a Cobb & Co, it can't be fixed at all! A struggling little Aussie battler, a wheat-and-sheep cocky, comes in from one of his paddocks to be met by his wife, who tells him, "Your three-year old son fell off the front veranda and broke his arm. We're going to have to take him into town to the doctor to get a splint put on it." The cocky looks at her in horror and says, "Doctor?? Splint?? Bloody hell, don't tell me we're out of fencing wire too!"

Pretty much all the workshops do this. Pressure from us to reduce prices combined with pressure from the owners to increase profits means the employed mechanic is always in a hurry and the result of being in a hurry is forgetting things and no time to check the work.

Lets get something clear here, this was a local mechanics fuck up, not Land Rover. Mind you though, the exhaust system could have been designed a little better and on the next iteration it was. Its a lot simpler and stronger on a Td5 than the 300Tdi (Brett's truck)
