One of the steps I was worried about was figuring out how to remove the bolts on the 110+ yr old Buss Machinery Company 8" jointer than I am working to restore.
I may have been able to use an adjustable pin wrench...but I do not have one of those and was worried they would not either have the right size pins, or the bolts would be too tight and I would pretzel the wrench.
So I finally figured out that I do have a piece of steel that I could use, it was the one brace that held the jointer motor to the original base when I got it. Then using that and two extra 3/8-16 bolts I was able to make a custom wrench that worked great.
And best of all, I think the bolts look fine and not damaged from being over tightened in the past. That is one of the big worries with this style cutter head...if the bolts are damaged it can fly apart.
So now that I am able to get the bolts out, I can clean it up and install the new blades and get those adjusted properly.
Then I can again fight with the bearings, but I now know the head should be good to go which was a big worry....ie that I would get the bearings finally sorted and the head would be ruined or something and thus wasting all the work. But since the head bolts etc look ok, everything will hopefully work fine once I can get the bearings finished up and not spewing oil..
