I also recently purchased a used diesel. Coincidentally, The items discussed in this video were my search and research criteria. I ignored being "brand loyal" (Chevy guy), and went for test rides and lots of research on known problems. I decided based on what I felt when I drove, acceleration, ride firmness, rattles and noises, and visual inspection of body lines and under carriage. Ended up finding a 2010 ram, crew cab longbed 2wd with under 34k miles. It was mainly a trailer puller from an older fella. Not a lot of service records, but offset by low miles. I am performing factory maintenance now so I have a good starting point.

I bought my 2000 F350 Diesel in 2009 for $13,000.00, and sold it in 2019 for $12,000.00. I take care of my vehicles, and it was clean when I sold it. The biggest advantage of a diesel over a gas truck is the resale value.

I got the 1995 Dodge 5.9 3500 4x4 5 speed dually. Best truck I've ever owned, NO emissions at all, I wouldn't trade it for any newer truck, just saying.

Just picked up a 2004 chevy 3500 dually. Only 77,000 miles. I buffed one panel yesterday and the black paint is lime a morrow now. The interior is flawless. I gathered it was a Vermont truck, then upstate new york, yes, very snowy and salty, but even though I had to replace the entire steering system, the rest is clean, clean clean. Someone, 2 owners, babied this thing. Real lucky find in my opinion.

I purchased my 06 Dodge Cummings, 2WD, auto tranny new. Replaced tyranny ay 200,000. I use my truck for all my driving including towing our Airstream trailer. Current mileage 283,

Good overall insightful video of common sense things to watch for when buying a used diesel. Interestingly he didn't mention any of the Rams historical front end tie rod and ball joint issues, rear end issues or transmission issues. Many folks have in the past bought Dodge trucks mostly for the Cummins engine, only to realize that outside of the engine, the rest of the truck was junk. I completely agree with his comments on the Ford Diesel engine problems from commencement to end of their relationship with International (NaviStar). The 6.0L and newer 6.4L were predominantly garbage power plants that were mostly problematic within months of ownership. The 2011 Ford Diesel engine forward has had a stellar track record. GM Duramax/Allison combination has also had a stellar record from 2007 to Y-T-D. The sad commentary about all of these truck manufacturers is that each could build a trouble free HD truck that if properly maintained should run without mechanical issue for 10 plus years. If the highway transport trucks can do it, why can't Chevy, Ford, or Ram? The sad commentary we are all faced with is that we pay to much and get too little in return. Reliability and TCO are everything.

Well done. I think you knocked this clean out of the park. Your comments matched my personal observations to the extent that it sounded like a conversation my son and I had last year. He is a mechanic and into diesels. I used to lean toward gas engines. But now all the big blocks are gone so I've been paying closer attention to the newer diesel trucks as I will eventually buy a used one. The sad thing is that all three one ton manufacturers have done their part to destroy the reputation of the indestructible and reliable diesel.

I love my old 7.3. just got back yesterday from a trip to Texas hauling my 30' gooseneck with an f450 on it and a bunch of heavy sheet metal equipment. I figure trailer and load was about 16.5k lbs. My old 97 f350 with now 281,000 miles did awesome, never once had to down shift for a hill and cruised at 70mph all day long. Round trip avg was 10.84 mpg. Now to be fair my truck isn't exactly stock anymore either.

I recently purchased a 2015 F450 with 49,800. With that mileage it has 10k left of the original powertrain warranty. I knew that the truck was maintained regularly and that there were almost zero warranty claims performed on the truck. There was also zero signs of use on the fifth wheel picks or either 7 pin connector. From all appearances it was taken care of and didn't tow anything heavy. I got the Ford premium care extended warranty for another 50000 of coverage because this is the only truck I am buying. We worked hard to achieve this goal and did a lot of research for all brands. Ultimately it was the flat floor inside, the turning radius, and the fender design that led us to the Ford. Our friends own Ford, Ram, and Chevy dealers so I could have gotten any truck I wanted.

I trust most manufacturers more than prior owners! I took my vehicle in for service yesterday, and listened to an owner of a turbo car which "factory specified synthetic oil on the oil filler cap" insist that they wanted a conventional oil, used in an oil change. I've seen owners put 'any old coolant in their cooling system" hammer on battery terminals, drive through water that is too high, skip required maintenance, rock their vehicle at high revs in snow/ ice to get unstuck....etc. Owners are nuts!

Fairly accurate video. I own a 2005 Dodge 5.9 Cummins, I am nearing 400,000, and it has been absolutely bulletproof. Cummins builds a better engine from the factory. Unlike a Navistar in a Ford, which you have to rebuild more often than a gas engine to keep them running. Especially the 6.0 and 6.4 garbage engines. You can’t even Really bulletproof a 6.0 it only has four head bolts per cylinder. I don’t care what kind of stud bolts you use, you need at least six per cylinder. I think your best Diesel truck is a Dodge or GM. Duramax are a decent power plant for the most part. And of course Allison trannys are the best. That being said most people don’t service their trannys often enough, need to replace the fluid ever 85,000 km. My Dodge rfe 48 tranny is still original from new 377,000 Kms later. For Dodge trucks I would recommend 03 to 05, 06 and newer have additional issues.

Haven't owned a Diesel Pickup since 2008 and it was my 2000 Dodge Cummins and it was a beast. I am in the market to buy one in the next year. This was helpful.

About two years ago now I was looking at buying a new-to-me diesel. I asked a number of knowledgeable people about it, and they all unanimously said 12 Valve because of the sheer simplicity and reliability of the engine. Did some asking around of the people I knew, and had mentioned that I was looking for one at a local vehicle repair shop that my old company used to use. Turned out he had one he was looking to sell, 97 200 Laramie, ext cab long box, which was exactly what I wanted. He bought it from an old fart that only used it to pull a 5th wheel across the country, and he only used it for similar work. Had 312K on the clock, completely stock engine, and a new 47RH trans with 10k on it. I bought it, put 40k on it in a year before the stock injectors and turbo finally decided to die. Replaced those with some upgraded aftermarket bits and it's perfectly fine. It's knocking on 360k now, and with that many miles I can't complain too much when something fails. It'll be the first and probably last truck I ever have to buy.

To be honest I've had a 99 7.3 a 2003 7.3 a 2006 6.0 which never had a issue with but the 7.3's both had issues with the wiring harness in the valve covers. I now have a 2010 F350 4x4 6.4 that I love. That truck is such a pleasure to drive. They have all been F350's and 4x4's. I think the key is just driving them correctly and maintaining them which I do.

This is a great video that is not swayed heavily by bias. It seems that everywhere you go there is someone bashing on a certain brand simply because that's all they've ever known. Every brand has issues, some more than others, and certain engines tend to be more problematic. Do your research, buy what suits you, and fix it if it breaks. Just as soon as my dad purchased a 6.4 a friend of mine (and Cummins die-hard) was already cracking on us. Everyone has their horror stories about every brand out there but there is plenty of good as well!

I was looking at used diesels about a year ago and couldn't justify paying over $25k for a bullet proofed 6.0 with almost 200k miles. I was looking for 2 months solid and the truck was either lifted, trashed with tuning, or they wanted too much. I ended up buying a new truck off the lot but it was hard for me to swallow the $8,500 to upgrade to the power stroke. I got the gas burner and haven't been let down yet. I own a business doing grading and landscaping mostly for GC'S doing spec houses and developments and I haven't had any trouble pulling my mini or skid steer. Sure at times I would like more torque for pulling when it's hilly but I have gotten by and with having a good tip deck trailer with really good trailer brakes I haven't had trouble stopping. I got a 16 f250 xl trim package with a crew cab and 8 ft bed in 4x4 with the snow plow prep, aperance package and alloy wheels. for $38k out the door with a lifetime power train warranty threw the ford dealer I bought it from since I put it in my name and not my business name. They didn't do the power train warranty on diesels either wich was a deciding factor as well.

You don't have to lift the cab on Super Duty's to work on the engine. I've removed the heads in frame on my 2005 F-350 King Ranch to install ARP head studs. If one desires easier access, then the cab can be lifted or the engine pulled out through the front. That goes for GM trucks too. Dodge trucks generally don't need to due to the space saving I6 design versus V8.

I'm picking my 2013 f350 King ranch crew cab 4x4 Saturday. 107k miles on it, one owner and local trade with all service records. The guy used it for towing his 20ft gooseneck and Kubota tractor to deer camp once a year and used it as a daily driver. I don't know the man but I did find out who owned it and gave him a call. He traded it in because he's 80 years old and didn't need a dually anymore. I'm hoping I have good luck with this one, and it was still pricey at $35,000.

Great video. My two cents on this is I sold my 2011 Chevy 3500HD Diesel, and bought a 2017 Chevy 3500HD Diesel. I did not want to buy a new truck, and it has cost me about 25k to buy this new truck. Since 2011 was the first year of emissions, it is my thought, GM put out a truck that was not quite ready. My recommendation to anyone reading this is avoid any 2011 Diesel truck.

never had a problem with our 6.0 and have had a programed in it for towing and it had 222000 miles on it

I got my grandfather's 96 F350 (long bed, dually, 7.3L) with 67,XXX on the odometer. I knew it needed new tires what I didn't expect was the total transmission failure in my daughter's school parking lot. my grandfather bought the truck from a Ford dealer in 98 with 16K miles on it. It got babied, never pulled a trailer even. Some how aluminum parts got put inside the trans, complete failure. $3800 in parts and labor. Ouch!

I did a complete fluid change on my truck after purchase and it helped its running greatly.

The 2011 Ford superduty specifically had an issue with the bearings in the turbos due to using ceramic bearings.

buying used is hard. a friend was selling his old hauling truck. 1999 f250 supercab 8footbed v10 6.8l with 297,000 miles. I got it for 2grand before I bought it I checked for leaks and damages on the underbody. this truck was a beast pulling a 8k trailer to and from California last month, tho anyone who acquires a used truck and plan to take a trip need to do a good walk over the whole truck, before I left i changed the fluids, check and replaced filters and brakes, had good tires put on as the ones on it was shot and had it aligned. don't want there to be a moment on the road that I can't trust the truck to stop and turn when needed. good video

Ram was first on the market with DPF in 2007.5....6.7 CTD, not '11-'12 like stated. Also dash cracks were from 2nd gen years ('94-'02). Climate control blend door on the 3rd Gen Rams were a problem. Personally all years of Ram are good from 12V to current 6.7 CTD.. Although the tranny in Ram has always the worst out of the big three. I agree stay away from PS 6.0 & 6.4.. Duramax '01-'04 (injector issues) and '04.5-'05 ( possible overheat) I wouldn't stray from. The overheat issue is an easy fix. Neverless, I enjoy your videos.

if you cant afford a new diesel truck, and are looking for a 2010 or older, i recommend a 24 valve cummins. from my experiences they are really solid engines and are easy to fix if something goes wrong. I myself am a ford guy but i didnt choose the 7.3 because a cummins is just easy to fix and is reliable as long as you take care of them.

My 2500 Silverado 6.0 tows really good.

When buying a Dodge look at truck that come with the automatic with the aisin transmission. Aisin is a Japan trans and are very reliable.

Owning and operating a diesel costs more money. I'd say first thing to consider is if you need or want one enough to pay the extra. I blindly bought a 6.0 Ford (2006) to pull a fifth wheel travel trailer and enjoy it very much but it has been a little expensive. The good points are that it has plenty of power, drives comfortably, and gets decent mileage when towing. The brakes, suspension, body, and trans have all been pretty much trouble free, just normal wear stuff.As he says in the video the engine is another matter. In the 6.0 market: While there is a company called BulletProof Diesel, the term "Bulletproofed" is a general term along with such catch phrases like "stage 1" "stage 2" etc. ignore these terms from a salesman and get specifics from a private seller who knows what's been done. EGR cooler deletes or aftermarket improved, various fittings on the high pressure oil system, larger alternators, improved radiator and coolant, are a few of the common updates. Head studs are also common but many trucks are still on the road with the factory head bolts if they haven't been overheated. If you enjoy turning wrenches this is the truck for you. Shops roll their eyes and double the price when you say 6.0 PowerStroke but honestly, they aren't that hard to work on and you will save thousands if you can do it yourself. While it is more convenient to lift the cab if major work is necessary (and you have a lift) but everything can be worked on without lifting it. Be aware also, the truck went from front leaf springs to coils in 2005, shortening the turning radius significantly, especially on the crew cabs and several changes to the engine that were significant upgrades. The power stroke guy from Ga. is knowledgable but he has his own agenda. Take some of that stuff with a grain of salt. Things aren't as dramatic as he makes them seem. If you want some specific info check out Super Duty Service in Mo. Or watch some DieselTechRon (RIP) videos.

A big expense with dodge trucks is their hvac. Doors in the system like to break and $1500 repair bills are not uncommon. The dash has to come out. You can fix the broken doors and then have servo failures later (they`re $200 ea.) Scary to have that liability which shouldn`t be there.

I bought my 2005 2500HD Duramax back in 2014 with 77k miles. It's been a great truck and tows well....I've upgraded stuff on it and keep it maintained. I'm not spending a ton of money on a new one that just depreciates as you drive it.

Just bought a 1993 7.3L IDI with original 126k miles on it and it is solid! Runs like a top!

From my research bullet proofing is when you get 4 of the 5 main failures addressed on the 6.0 and 6.4 litre powerstroke motors.

I just bought a 6.0 powerstroke and it runs like a top especially after running seafoam through it. Plus the body and interior is like in mint condition I bought it because a friend of mine has one and has never had an issue out of it

I recently purchased a used 2014 F-350 DRW Ford with 47k miles when I drove off the lot. Everything was clean, no leaks, no blow by, or any other fluid I can see leaking. This is also after continuous monitoring a week later, I know dealerships will clean up trucks to appear amazing when they aren’t. This is my first diesel and I bought it to tow our future fifth wheel and was commenting to get your two cents on this purchase. Anyway the truck seems to drive like new, I know diesels perform better under loads and long hauls (which I have done neither yet) but I have put about 400 miles on it in a week. Also, all these emissions, that frankly, put a cork on either end of this powerful drive train. I live in Texas as well and deleting the truck is not an option, at least for now, due to fear of getting fined. I know this is a long comment, but your input would be helpful, mainly in the aspect if you thought this was a good purchase. Thanks in advance. -J

I just bought a 2017 RAM 3500 4x4 with Aisin, tow & gooseneck packages Cummins turbo Diesel with only 22300 miles on it. Unbelievable power, very happy so far. Thankfully I got carfax and am 2 Nd owner, all recalls done. Funny thing about this truck tho- I felt a strange steering sensation, so investigated the odd feeling= I found a steering trac bar bolt and nut that were totally wrong and not factory parts so I ordered the correct part bolt and correct nut/safety flange and low and behold the truck previously was “sawing/sliding” on this bolt inside the bushing. It looked like on the assembly line they ran out of the correct bolt and flange so stuck a coarse threaded bolt and incorrect washer/nut instead. Buying the truck I could not understand “why only 22k miles on a 2 year old RAM 3500 Cummins?”... honestly I think the previous owners felt the weird steering and did not drive it, traded it in... For $32.00 I fixed the problem and now the truck handles like a dream! I feel like I stole the truck in the deal, the sales manager kept telling me the truck “didn’t have the Aisin, did not have the gooseneck tow package” but I could clearly see those options staring me in the face! I love the 2017 RAM 3500 CrewCab 4x4, now I have 24000 miles, using this truck for hauling firewood/trailer big loads. 😁 Thanks for your videos!

I don’t know much about diesel trucks but I’m wanting a super duty truck but I’m going to save up money for a while and get information about diesel trucks and make good decisions whenever I purchase one.

I purchased the lb7 used some years ago. First diesel-2 months of research; didn't work out well. blown head gaskets, machined heads, 12 injectors, water pump, diesel return line issues, bad water sensors, leaking boost tube. Bunch of items on the chassis and typical gm fail points for that particular model line. i think the steering wheel and the allison are the only original items left at 202k. Previous owner wasn't honest so make sure you ask to drive to a reputable shop for a simple diagnostic of your potential diesel purchase. I am more inclined for a big block on the newer chassis years but that doesn't appear to ever have a future. Like the newer units but would like to see a 250k powertrain/emissions warranty for the price of the new model diesels.

Best Diesel engine out there is ford 7.3 and the 6.7 diesel GM LB7 LLY and LBZ Dodge Ram any Cummins diesel!

I found/bought a 1990 7.3idi f250 xlt Lariat, rwd with a 10.5" C9 LSD owned by a local farm for the past 30(almost) years. It has a banks turbo installed(2012), complete with a trans controller, upgraded injectors, IP, straight pipe, intake, and as banging system. It's also head studded aka bullet proof. I'm just about to hit 140k miles with service records! Rust free but needs paint to look new. There are still old trucks that are worth owning/restoring.

Thank you very much for your video very informative, although I'm planning to buy a diesel motorhome it still gave me the information I needed for the diesel engines itself. I personally was leading towards the Cummins engine because I like the inline setup they have and I hear very positive things about the engine itself overall.

I work for a large construction company, and all of the big 3 make a decent diesel, but it's all about maintenance and how they were used. The pre-DPF diesel trucks are the way to go in my opinion. I have a 2000 7.3, no DPF fluid, no egr system, no cats. I replaced the exhaust with a magnaflow 15900 because it rusted out. I looked into putting a tuner & intake on it, but I am scared of creating problems.

2005 6.0 Bone stock. 60k miles. No issues. Don't throw a dumb tune on your truck, and don't drive it like a stooge, and it'll be ok.

The 2011 & 2012 6.7 Ford Powerstrokes have issues with weak valves and ceramic turbo bearings that fail. Ford blames the glow plugs for destroying the engine but it usually is a broken exhaust valve. The 2013 to present 6.7's are good engines with the exception of the Bosch CP4 fuel pump. The 2011 to 2016 GM Duramax also suffer from the CP4 pump failures.

There was a video were they took a 2002 chevy 2500 vs 2016 chevy 2500 diesel on towing fuel mileage one towing the other. Newer truck close to 1000 pounds heavier with the new 6 speed got 10 mpg but the 2002 with 160k got 10.75 mpg. Both towed the same as far as pulling hills and not struggling. Total weight of the trucks and trailer was almost 10k. It's about the same way with the gas burners.

My family avoids the 6 liter power strokes we have always bought used trucks

A little over a month ago I bought a 2000 F350 with 446k miles on it. 7.3 PSD, for the price and given it runs just fine, I'm super happy. While I have my brand bias alot has to do with my experience with them.

Nobody in Eastern WA sells a diesel truck before 150,000 miles. They are so expensive that people just don’t replace them until they are really well used.

Here is the problem I face. I like first gen cummins trucks as well as more modern diesels across the board. I am 21 years old and could maybe afford 10k. That being said, I think I have to save some money just in case I have a "worst case senario" of injectors going. That pushes the budget below what is required for a solid truck. I want a truck that will last me forever with minimal rust.

The automatic transmissions in the 2006-2009 Cummins Rams were not very reliable. My suggestion for that type of truck is to either buy one and invest in upgrading the transmission parts, or buy one of the trucks with a manual.

In short... when buying a used truck... it's a crap shoot! ..

just so you know the 2012 Ram was the last year that they didn't require DEF. 2013 Rams are when the DEF was required. 2012 and before 6.7 Cummins do not require DEF. Just an FYI,

I own a 2003 Silverado 2500 HD diesel powered of course now it has about 80,000 miles but living in the Northeast the rockers are rusted out and I really from the ice and chemicals but mice like to live in the rocker panels of these trucks for some reason and I had a mouse nests in both sides The trucks at most of the time and I didn't drive it much but I really can't complain other than an injection pump failure in 2005 truck at 35,000 miles I never really had a problem with it and I'm gonna keep it until I die I love it

My next 1 ton will be a gas dually. After traveling with diesel trucks and RV's I am tired of all the oil covered diesel pumps. Too often even at newer stations, there is a nice oil slick right by the pump. Would love to hear your thoughts on gas tow vehicles. I know they are rated lower but they should easily handle a truck camper or fifth wheel I might get in the future. Great channel. Keep up the great work.
