He went into that with his mind made up before they started. They could have served him the most authentic Chinese food possible and he would have complained. The older people in the video were much more accepting of the dishes. Mind you, I'm not a fan of Panda Express, but just because something isn't authentic doesn't mean it is terrible. Not to mention the guy in gray was also racist.

American Chinese food is a type of Chinese food. Just like Shanghainese food, Beijing food, HK food, Cantonese food, Korean Chinese, Indo-Chinese, etc. “Traditional” is all relative. American Chinese food has been around longer than today’s form of Guangzhou dim sum that folks are familiar with.

I'm not Chinese, but it's the same thing with my family. after my grandparents came to america from Russia, obviously they held there ways of cooking and foods that American would think are gross. but my mom is a very traditional person, but has altered her cooking to her family's liking. not ideal like my grandma's cooking. I don't cook identically as my mom iv altered my ways and recipes. from both my mom and grandma having living with both women my whole childhood and into adulthood. and as a side note. both sides of my grandparents don't speak English but they understand it. it's hard for older people to learn another language.

It's different. Panda Express is imitation Chinese food where as McDonald's is just what it is. I frequent a Chinese Restaurant just about every day from my work usually buying about 20 bucks of food (I'm a lifeguard calorie intake is high) but I still visit Panda Express not because I believe it is Chinese because I believe it is Chinese Fast Food. (They have a drive thru at all the locations in my town they are a Fast Food Restaurant). I don't think I know one person who goes to Panda Express who thinks it is real Chinese.

Jacob Haines Sorry, I may have not made my point too clear. I was not implying that non authentic food tastes better than authentic - because it probably doesn't. My point was that they acted that it tasted and smelled horrible, however, just because it's not authentic doesn't mean it tastes bad.

It's because younger people are less secure with their culture so they want to assert that they are actively a part of their culture and know things about it, while the older people are very secure with the fact that they're Chinese, like they don't need to let anyone know, they just are. Which makes them more open to trying new things because they see it as a compliment to their culture that we tried to make their food instead of an insult.

I am actually surprised by the results. In college I was friends to many Chinese people, as I was part of the Chinese Student Association. The club included both very traditional and very American Chinese students, and some in between. And to my surprise as the time, all of them loved Panda lol. I personally loved it too, with the fried rice being the only thing I didn't like. Some of the students would eat there every day, with others eating there weekly. So I was surprised that the younger kids in this video didn't like it. I assume they were trying to seem more culturally Chinese than they were, which I understand heavily since I'm a first generation Filipino American.

Those youngster are trying so hard to prove that they are pro Chinese, frankly they sound very spoiled. All I can think is that there is a small alteration with the ingredients because it might not be imported but could be replace and the taste changes a little, so that's not authentic? Better yet, they have never tried the real deal, only ate what they mother would cook or dines in a high-class Chinese banquet then compares their 'exquisite taste' to Panda Express. Business talk: you have to feed the people what they can consume, not cater to us alone.

The thing about Chinese food is that it's all freestyle, which is why I'm not surprised that the elders were a little more open to the Americanized versions of it. In China, a dish with the same name could be entirely different in two different places - and they're used to it. It's an improvisational food, using a wide variety of ingredients available at each location to try and produce whatever tastes best. The kids, who did not grow up with that mentality, would therefore be more inclined to define one specific taste as "Fried Rice" and to dislike anything deviating from that taste. That's a very western approach to recipes.

Headrock That would make sense. Because they are living over here eating their parents cooking (who might've grown up over there) and only their parents cooking, most likely. They don't have much of a chance to experience different styles, I would think?
@headrockbeats
@headrockbeats 9 жыл бұрын
Leigh Tkd Hmmm might be, but I think it's more to do with the fact that American food (well, western food in general) is much more uniform, and that includes Chinese food in America. For example, Sweet & Sour Chicken would taste roughly the same anywhere you eat it in America, especially if you always eat it from the same chain store. In China, it could very well taste pretty different in two restaurants _within the same city_. And that's considered _normal_. Westerners love putting foods into easily-recognizable categories, and even sub-dividing categories when two similar foods diverge in taste or ingredients from one another, even a little. That's why, for example, there are so many names for different kinds of pizza (neapolitan style, sicilian style, roman style, new york style, deep dish, pizza bianca, and so on), when it's all basically cheese on bread. In a Chinese restaurant in China, the menu will rarely specify any details about a dish - it will call out a generalized name, and let the customer decide whether they trust the cook to make it taste good (also, photographs of the food are very very common, to give customers an idea of what they're going to get). There are also many restaurants (especially in rural areas) where there is no menu at all - you pick the ingredients yourself from a display shelf, and the cook tries to make whatever you picked taste good. It's an improvisational approach to foods, that makes people much more open to dishes that are very different from one place to the next. The kids would not have that kind of approach.

It is traditional chinese food though. American chinese food was developed in America by Chinese who wanted to eat their traditional food, but had to make do with local ingredients, many of which were different. Then with the spread of chinese restaurabts the taste evolved to suit the local pallette. You see the same thing with American BBQ in Asia.

I'm Canadian Chinese, I once did a survey at the office with coworkers to determine if there was any correlation between rest-room cleanliness and the quality of food. Several of my Chinese friends found that the more unkept the washroom was, the better the taste of their food. And I'm referring to restaurants in Toronto's main China Town district and not the fast food chains of Chinese food. The survey results confirm what my friend and I observed with the exception of one coworker.

I feel like what certain foods look like can be a little different from where you are from in China. My dad used to cook fried rice a lot when I was younger and he would put eggs and green onions in it with some little shrimp things that my grandma sent over from China since we live in the United States.

ᅲᅲharley lol it sounded to me more like Cantonese versus mandarin in some instances. The Cantonese side was like “this is pretty good”. I think it’s because Cantonese people were the first to immigrants from China and Americanized Chinese food in America in order to survive and make a business. Mainland Chinese people kinda came afterward after Cantonese food got Americanized.

funny how the adults were less judgmental and were actually enjoying the food, as opposed to the younger 3 who were being very stuck-up about the whole thing. In fact from them three the girl on the right actually was enjoying the food but the girl and boy with her kept making annoying comments as to make her feel bad for enjoying the food.

@jessicatang5986
@jessicatang5986 8 жыл бұрын
The elders are right. The younger ones are just trying to be cool and think that they are gonna be served authentic chinese food. You can't expect that from a chinese resturant in America. The elders had that in mind and even if they didn't like it they were still respectful, I mean I don't think that the younger ones would be able to tell the difference if they put authentic food on one plate and Panda Express food on the other. The girl on the left said that the chow mian was good but when she heard the other kids opinion she immediately became insecure.

I take it you aren't Chinese? There's something lost in the subtitle translation. The older generation who said Chinese chow mein actually explicitly said chow mein from CHINA is like that, but if you speak Chinese you will notice they are not from mainland China.... So they're actually saying really just that they think chow mein from China is probably like this, given that they aren't from there

Thank you. It's like they were trying to be haters because it's cool to be tied to the old country. Get over yourself. A big part of Asian culture is humility, and the young kids are so American even in their tastes. Meaning their first instinct is to criticize and belittle.
@abbyhodge3203

I don't think they were trying to show out. I think they are just more picky because they grew up in America where they have mostly been able to eat whatever. The older generation isn't picky simply because they were raised not to be, and they most likely came to America with very little. They didn't have chances to be picky.

So the more Chinese the people actually were, the more they liked the food. It looked a lot like the young dude felt he had to prove he was "really Chinese" by dissing all the food, while the 100% Chinese older folks were a lot more positive. Surprised to be left with the notion that Panda Express isn't all that bad after all (haven't tried it).

It's probably more of the elders have to be polite. I mean in China if you hate the food you have to say you love it, even if someone tells you to be honest you MUST say you love the food or you lose face. Whereas in America, you can express your opinion however you like.
