Say goodbye to barre chords and learn Edward Van Halen's secret to KILLER riffs.... This video is all about getting familiar with INTERVALS and using the different intervals to create different moods from savage to playful! I can remember as a young guitar player being so frustrated that I couldn't make my barre chords sound like the riffs I was hearing my favorite guitarists (and especially EVH) play....and how learning about intervals and smaller chord voicings unlocked an entire new world! In this video we not only break down some classic Van Halen riffs, but I give you a short masterclass in the sounds of the intervals within a key, and some great ways on how to practice them all over the neck! I hope Eddie is smiling down on us, and that this video makes you smile too!!!
The tones in this video are courtesy of the amazing ToneX pedal.... and gotta give a shoutout to #TopJimiStudios for the sick capture!!!!
0:00 - 0:37 Intro

I agree. When you really pay attention and listen to Eddie's rhythm playing it's almost unbelievable that he came up with some of those patterns, let alone Dave coming up with these melodies over the top. Crazy good stuff.

I always thought he approached rhythm guitar like the right hand of a keyboard player and did a really good job of keeping sonic separation between his guitar and Mike's bass. They had a huge sound for a trio and I think this had a lot to do with it. And it takes a lot of trust in your bass player to do that. Which speaks well to both Ed and Mike.

It’s so cool seeing someone that knows some music theory actually explain all of these intervals. These are things I’ve been playing since the early 80’s but never knew the names of the intervals and how they work. I just figured them out, out of necessity. People would ask me how I was playing those riffs and I could never explain it because I had no idea. I always wished I could teach, but I’m no teacher. I wish I had a teacher like you back in the day. My path would have been quicker.

Charlie, this is amazing. Watching this was SO eye opening, I almost cried. There's so much I've learned watching this ONE tutorial, and I'm 60 this year, and Arthur is setting up in my joints...so I don't need to tell you that chord formations on the fretboard are not only frustrating, but painful. Voicing out these phrases while not needing to be a phalangeal contortionist will be bringing me SO much joy for my degree of noodling. And while EVH will basically remain Royalty of this type of playing, I'd urge you to open up Dirty Weapons from Killer Dwarfs, and give Mike Hall a quick listen. These types of 3rd fill rhythms are all over that record, and sound no less awesome. From the bottom of my ❤; thank you..for opening up a very easy to comprehend tutorial for this ol' noodler... (I'm linking this one to my brother, who is also an aspiring noodler😉)

Thanks, I listened to Dirty Weapons based on your recommendation here...that song kicks ass! And yes, a great example of those same types of riffs. Sorry to hear Arthur wants to move in...he's a bad roommate. I just turned 56 and know a little about joints...if there's anything you can do to minimize systemic inflammation, it can really help! 🎸🎸🎸

Arthur hates curcumin! What is curcumin? It comes from the spice, tumeric. It is a great supplement to take for inflammation and as an alternative antibiotic. I get the NOW brand on amazon. 👍 Hope your jointers are feeling better soon.

Even If you don't understand the theory behind this or even the name of the notes this is actually really easy to understand and simplifies the process of creating your own riffs. But if you only learn at least the names of the open string notes and the intervals, (those two things are actually pretty simple, this coming from someone who for the longest time didn't want to bother with learning this stuff) you will understand it even better. Great short lesson. Thanks for this!

I think a lot of people DONT realize how much slower paced EVERYTHING was. Including information. I knew of vhs tapes and magazines but I lived on a farm in Nebraska, not ANY music or record stores for 50 miles. I believe that is why we are seeing an influx in musicians, action sports, etc. ITS EASIER TO GET BETTER WHEN KNOWLEDGE IS FREELY AVAILABLE.

Most of us have likely done some of this, but aside from feeling like a cheat because it’s so technically accessible, I for one have never fleshed this out and exploited it. I've known all the intervals for years and years all over the fretboard- but APPLYING them like this is so much more valuable and not something I've done much of- thanks for this! Also- what's your signal chain here? You're getting great EVH tone at what seems like reasonable volumes. What pedals/amp did you use for this?

Thanks so much for the kind words!!! I’m using Tonex for the tones - specifically a “capture” by a gent that calls himself Top Jimi and he has all the same gear Ed used on the first few records

Hey, do you know how to play the double stop intervals like this, in Harmonic and Melodic minor scales? I was trying to figure it out but it was not right. I can not find a single video on youtube on how to do that!

Hey @chrisrocco6429 thanks for checking it out! The guitar is 1999 G&L Legacy with a Seymour Duncan humbucker in the bridge - not sure which one! The guitar tone is coming from Tonex by IK Multimedia. The "capture" is from a guy who calls himself Top Jimi and is well known for having all the matching gear Eddie used on the first few records. The only effect is some reverb from my DAW!

Can I have a do over? I began guitar in the dark ages too. No videos. No iPhones. Just albums, the radio and your ears. Yeah and emphasis on barre chords with lame books that had tabs which didn’t sound like what was actually being played. . Give a kid a crap a## guitar with high action and heavy strings on a fat neck , then make them think they need to hold a fully barred F chord for multiple measures. That’s one way to lose enthusiasm.

I always find that anything played beyond the D string sounds screeching, especially on a strat model

Hey there Charlie! Which model amp do you have? 100 watts can get crazy loud so you’re probably going to need a pedal for some grit (if you don’t want your ears to bleed) 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
