It keeps my fingers limber I suppose, but I'm not aware of how it has helped me play better. So the next one could be covering how learning this type of material makes you any better.

Hey Charlie, I've just recently been getting into your videos . First time I've watched this one. Am I mistaken at around 9 min 20 sec when you say he's going from the 2nd to the third the diagram shows moving from the 4th to the 5th fret.... shouldn't it be to the 5th fret for a major 6th? Id love to get some one on one pointers from you some time! Great teacher.

Could have been a great lesson. You used tabs when doing 3 notes per string then when you started changing things you didn’t use any tabs. Someone already stated that once you left the 3 notes per string we didn’t know which key you were in. I thought that if you used a note as root you were telling me what key it was in. I’ve been playing for sometime but got lost. Thanks for sharing.

I can tell you what the problem is. These idiots see pros doing it and making it look effortless. So they assume anyone can just pick up s guitar and do it. Sorry, dudes. First, you have to practice, practice, practice. And practice more. Second, you need to have music inside your head that wants to get out. Otherwise, you're not a musician. Sorry. Maybe if you learn enough theory, you can fake it. Otherwise, you'll just have to accept it.

The issue I am struggling with is getting my 70 year old fingers to move fluidly. With some arthritis in my hands from beating them up for 50 years as an auto technician, plus previously broken and pinned on the end middle finger knuckle, it is a struggle to use all of my hand digits to move with the scales. I am trying but having fun with playing what I can! I'll never be a SRV or Hendrix but knowing you limitations helps. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

These are good points. Another strategy is to work visually, with minimal theory knowledge (that'll come). Learn just one minor pentatonic scale shape, and chord shapes (using CAGED). To improvise a solo on the spot, first, know what key you're playing in. If it's a major key, the scale shape will work either in the position you learned, or thee frets to the left, when it magically becomes a major scale. If the key is minor, then the shape will really work only in the first position. Then, hit some notes from that scale, and notes that match whatever chord's being played at that time. This is a simplification, but it works, and is a good starting point, especially if you find music theory problematic.
