I'd echo the Mixergy and also look at a sunamp heat battery, ideal for this situation and can be used with either solar PV or solar thermal in the future. Electric underfloor heating is fine to take the cool off, but there are much much more economical ways to heat a space. An air to air heat pump (what everyone else calls AC) will give about 5 units of heat for 1 unit in out, and will keep you cool in the summer too. Hope that helps!

Sunamp would be great for size and heat-loss, but possibly not for weight as you can’t drain it down like a water tank when needing to transport.

Only a few thoughts: - I think the corridors are internal with no windows? Consider PIR lightbulbs or sensors so they turn on (and off automatically) - ref your worries about weight, could you put the HWC outside in a forkliftable insulated shed? You'd also save some space inside for a sink to wash up your paint brushes... - consider a kitchen hot water tank - no cold plumbing leg to draw off before getting hot water for washing up, and (more importantly) no wait for hot water for tea...

No recommendations for brand or anything, but if it was me I'd still keep the shower electric and separate from your unvented cylinder. We have a heat pump with an unvented cylinder and the big frustration is that we run out of hot water with consecutive showers. With a busy family like yours having an electric shower might make life a lot easier!

Great overview and catchup of your project, it looks amazing. A think that a single double socket for the girls bedrooms is nowhere enough once they start having proper homework to do . Desk lamp, laptop / tablet charger, phone, fairy lights etc. I would say 3 double sockets may be enough.
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, two double sockets is the bare minimum for a bedroom, one near the bed and one for a desk! Can't really have too many sockets in a room (unless you go to crazy levels like 20 sockets per wall of course).

When you plan out the gap in the units for the American fridge make sure you leave a gap of a couple of inches at the top for ventilation - they run pretty hot. Also worth running a water supply with an isolation valve to that point under the units if you get one with a plumbed water cooler/ice machine. The plumbed ones tend to have more useable space. Due to your sound issues, I’m not sure if you are planning a kitchen island in front of the units? If you are make sure you leave enough space to get the fridge into the gap!

Hi sir as a retired electrical contractor I would advocate splitting the two haves via two fuse boards , just for future ease of separation . The supply to the second unit could be via a 45/50 amp isolator . So enabling a permanent separation of your two units if required . Best wishes and kind regards as always

On the topic of hot water we learnt the following on our granny annexe: the Stiebel Eltron DHC-E inline water heater (available at toolstation at a good price) can take an incoming water temperature of upto 55degC. So we have this plumped downstream of a hotwater cyclinder (which granted is heated by a heat pump), to ensure the shower never runs out of hotwater. As the cyclinder temp drops the inline heater kicks in to give full temp. And you can get fairly high flows when the tank is at 20-30C. So you can easily get 6 people showering back to back in a rainfall shower on a 200L cyclinder heated to 48C without any noticeable change it water temp. No reason to think the same on a smaller

Just moved to Japan and am starting to fix up a house here. The house has an oil fired boiler for hot water and used LPG for cooking. We put in an induction hob for cooking and are soon replacing the hot water heater with an electric EcoCute heat exchanger for hot water. Good for Japanese baths which are usually very hot.

Probably too late now but smoke alarms usually go on lighting circuit so (if anyone else stays there) they can't be turned off without losing lighting. Also, back boiler on wood stove, even a small one, combined with vented tank with immersion heaters (one solar/air source, one mains 3kw) gives you summer and winter options. If fire isn't lit, electric kicks in. Very old school but very simple and cheap for temporary. Insulating under and around a bath keeps it warmer for longer. Electric underfloor is generally just a 'tile warmer' whereas a wet system will make the room feel warm. Both systems are radiant rather than convection, so very efficient and don't warm air. With underfloor on a timer, it will provide enough until you've got up and lit the fire.

Hi Tim and the family, im loving the build plus the farm updates. I would recommend for your hot water conundrum is that you look into the OSO Indirect Hot Water Cylinder SUPER COIL - SC, im a plumbing and heating engineer and ive been installing these in rural cottages without gas options and very limited space and i couldn't fault them plus it has a coil if you decide to do solar.

Take a look at the Mixergy hot water tank. Heat what water you need, works with a range of sources, so can use an immersion heater for now and solar thermal in future. Different sizes, so may find room in your utility room. Combine with an off peak tariff, and only heat the whole thing when you want a bath. If it needs to be smaller a Sunamp could be an option, uses phase change material rather than water for heat storage.

Water heating sounds sensible on the hot water cylinder with 2 elements. I would consider not having an electric shower though and using the cylinder for shower too(maybe increase the capacity!) you can possibly connect to a decent tariff for perhaps one or both of the elements and heat the water during cheaper periods. If you have an electric shower you will pretty much only ever use it during peak times. Plus a shower from an unvented cylinder is a far nicer experience than electric. I am an electrician and this is the sort of set up I recommend when we’re doing electric only heating jobs!

Hi, we live in an flat that does not have a gas and have installed a Gabberon electric combi boiler that is modulating and can be set from 9 to 15 Kw and easily copes with both baths , showers and central heating if required. it contains small built in header tanks and a pump. It has been installed for several years and has given no trouble whatsoever, remember this also does not need a flue or pilot light. I also have a brand new 62 amp blue plug and socket going free to you if you can use it.

We are in an all electric (Economy 7) house, which we refurbed 5 years ago. The Glenhill unvented cylinder (160 litre) has been very good. The only problem has been that the expansion tank failed this year, but as its separate its easy (and cheap) to replace. I’m just in the process of installing solar pv panels this month, with a “solar diverter” to divert any “unused” solar electricity into the immersion heaters. Its maybe not the most cutting edge solution, but its substantially cheaper than some of the thermal store type options
@dave300m7

Actually, I’ve just been looking at the Gledhill Pulsacoil, recommended in a comment below, they are slightly more expensive than an unvented system, but don’t have the inspection requirements that unvented system have. If I was doing my refurb now (rather than 5 years ago) I’d be looking at this option.

And as always, edited because you covered all my thoughts.... Are you planning on a MVHR? would be worth it if you could run it in the ceiling, to minimise heating costs and make most use of the warmth from wood burner. a) If you're free to spec the wood burner and have the space I'd go with a back boiler and tank? and use that for the hot... but then you're limited on when you will have hot water. b) Potentially instant hot/ boiling water taps cover kitchen and bathroom hot water, not sure about bath. c) Look at Mixergy tanks.

Hi Tim & Jo, You were talking about using 4 x double sockets for a "charging station area". Not especially pretty, even without the maze of wires. The wife vapes and always has batteries in to charge, I use a 6-port USB hub plugged into a single 13A socket. They ( Anker ) do a 10-port USB hub for £60 which is so much better than a line of wall-warts!! You can keep a couple of double sockets for laptops or monitors if you might use it as an editing station, now you don't have your old converted loft!! I follow another YT'er who is trying to move wholly electric ( EV Puzzle ) and he has tried integrating the Mixergy tank with good hot water results, but mixed integration with his Home Automation set-up - he is a stats man!! Also @The Fully Charged Show has done some videos on the Mixergy. Robert ( Scrapyard Challenge ) Llewellyn was one of the early adopters and has had his for a few years now with more recent reviews and chats with the company. Great content as always!!👍🏻👍🏻

Re the hot water, definitely dual immersion heater with solar coil. If you intend to have PV with no battery storage, it can be used to heat the water. With battery storage any energy exported can also be directed to heat the water after batteries are full. Either way go for some sort of hybrid inverter. Solar thermal is relatively cheap, and more efficient than PV at turning the sun's energy into heat, though a solar dump may be necessary as your water temp can easily exceed 65 Deg C. Also, go for the largest cylinder you can fit, 100 litres sounds a bit small especially with growing kids. I got my cylinder from Newark Cylinders and can custom fit them for your requirements, with extra hot water outlets etc.

Love the channel and the project! I assume you've planned some kitchen layouts by now, but you appeared to fill in too many 600mm unit sections along that internal wall to then fit in a hob on the outer wall that wasn't ending up under the window? maybe it was just the camera angle, but with American fridge freezer larder/larder double oven then microwave/coffee machine? (that end section seems sub 600mm?? but with cabs coming out 600 that then puts you standing hard up beside the oven to be at the hob? as it looks not much more than 1200mm to the window? hope that makes sense. But wish you nothing but Luck and success with it !!

An Electrical Engineers set tips: I would add PV and battery storage now and don’t wait until later ( if you have the money obviously) a 4kw unit could cover peak usage and at current energy prices you can get a far quicker payback. Don’t wait…… Put in RCBO circuits as opposed to an MCB circuit with a master RCBO. Its not a massive up lift in costs to do this but worth it ( might be a little late for that now as the sparks have been in) Put a surge suppression unit adjacent to the incoming supply. Circa £100 but if it’s your business it might be worth it. Buy dimmable lighting and dimmer switch modules. Especially in the bathrooms and for night time in corridors. Have a separate circuit for the common areas and another for the bedrooms so if one trips you have lighting you can find your way around. USB sockets in the office Not for here but allow a 32Amp armoured supply to the front of your house for a future car charging point. Same for a loft conversation, and garage. Anyone else have a few more???

Tim - there are 6 or you + dog and lots of electrical wquipment . . . I think most of the time you will produce enough heat without needing radiators or underfloor heating but you have said in the past the family likes to be hot. If it were possible for the log burner to pre-heat the hot water that would reduce your electricity bill . . . brownie points for lots of hot baths quickly?

I’m sure you’ve considered this but could you not supply hot water into the cabin from outside via some sort of connector? We’ve got an external oil boiler and love it. Quiet and no smell in the house and I know they do combi versions too or of course gas if thats an option. Alternatively could you build a small boiler shed without needing planning or use one of the existing buildings? I’d be tempted to house the washer and dryer separately too given the noise they make but that may not be an option. Good luck with whatever you choose, love the channel!

We installed a full height pull out larder unit in our kitchen. It was rubbish, things fall through the gaps in the wire baskets, and it's got limited flexibility with number of racks and positions. It couldn't cope with too much weight either, e.g. too many tins and jars. I replaced it with shelves inside the cupboard. It now has much more storage and would have been much cheaper if I'd done that originally. If you're dead set on a pull out larder, I'll sell you my old one for a good price 😉.

Given the build and the need for flexibility the Sunamp type thermal storage would be a good option. There are a number of brands on the market and the plumbing is simple and if you go solar you can use directly to storage or overnight main rate. They are no heavier than a tank once it is full so it would only be on moving hodgepodge that you would notice the difference

Hi, loved the video and I have a question. Why do you need a tumble dryer? A simple covered lean-to with a washing line under it would do the job for no running cost. It would also dry in most weathers, a hard frost would be the exception but how often do you get a hard frost during the day? During those days a heat recovery unit in the utility room would get rid of all the damp air from drying the washing on an internal line. Just a thought. As always thanks for posting

What about adding an annexe on the side with just a cylinder in it that way you can have a larger cylinder as you need. You can also disconnect it and transport it separately if it's moved. Solar panels could also directly heat your water

No, the basin is in with WC. The comment was about the fact we might not put an additional utility sink in. 👍

Under sink water heaters don’t last very long. If you buy a sizeable wood burner you can put converted fans on the top to distribute air. Saves on a low wattage fan they work great I’ve got one for mine. Pressurise water system would be better for the whole house with two Emersion heaters. Cheaper maintenance and cheaper installation costs for under sink heaters. Get a good cylinder it will carry a 25 year guarantee against corrosion.

“She wants a bath”. I fitted a beautiful shell resin stone bath in our house because SWMBO (She who must be obeyed) wanted one. That was about 10 years ago and she hasn’t been in it once ! Happily our daughter, who has moved back in with us, uses it, so not completely pointless effort and expense. My advice would be to say to your SWBMO “ No. Baths are relat😂ively unhygienic - who in their right mind wants to stew in their own bodily fluids - , very energy and water hungry and impractical in the ‘caravan’. Showers are a much better and far, far more sensible option. Live with it .. it’s only temporary for goodness sake”. Be prepared for ‘stoppage of benefits’ and the silent treatment for a short period - STAY STRONG !!😊. Wash the dog in a shed - and SWMBO too if she still insists on a ‘bath’. But ensure you’ve got a long hose and a wet suit. Good Luck!

Any electric heater that uses an element to generate heat can only be 100% efficient, i.e. 1kw of electric in = 1kw of heat out, any sales blurb claiming increased efficiency over other forms of electrical heaters is basically rubbish An air/water heat pump is probably too costly for this project but a split air con unit (air to air heat pumps) would be 3-5x more efficient at generating heat than electric heaters, so 1kw electric in will give 3-5kw of heat out depending on outside temperatures, plus they'll cool it down in the summer. You can get multi splits that run 2 or 3 indoor units off a single heat exchanger outside, so maybe one on each side of the building so the connections don't need to be broken when the cabin is split in half.

How often are you likely to use the bath? If you are only going to use the bath for the dog and the odd soak, it might be worth keeping the electric shower for every day alongside a hot water cylinder for that occasional bath.

Hi love the channel very inspiring 👌🏻, just an idea if you are having a solar array for the cabin, you could get a product called solar iboost. Basically any spare watts (think as little as 150w, maybe less) will go to your immersion heater giving you fee hot water 👍🏻. Have just bought one for my solar install, a friend has it and raves about it, just a thought. All the best Dan.

2 double sockets per bedroom may not be enough, i would suggest 4, after all you're just deleting extension leads in the long run. Get a simple solar pv array (second hand panels and second hand inverter), myenergi eddy and a hot water tank, as someone else says, free hot water for at least half the year when the sun shines. Also, i know it's not exactly a massive place but you might want to add some cat6 strategically, even if they don’t actually go to ethernet jacks and just terminate them in blank boxes.

Only the girls bedrooms that have two doubles so I’m sure they’ll manage. Yeah looking at whether we do a small solar setup for the cabin for now in a way we can repurpose longer term when canin is gone. 👍

Hey Tim, I don’t know if you have them in the UK, or if they are appropriate, but in Australia, we have Heat-pump hot water systems that use electricity but draw heat from the environment; this may be an option.
