A selection of substrates I recently purchased from Kaizen Bonsai. We'll be taking a look at each one, its benefits and what I intend to do with them. If there is a particular combination of these you want me to use, then let me know in the comments, as in the future we will be doing some experiments with growing plants in different mixes.

Wow so excited to see this upcoming video its finally here 😁 Aaahh, wow this is such a beautiful video, Daz... I was so shocked when you mentioned my channel, CactusCove, it made me smile! What a lovely shout out such kind words! ☺️😁 Such amazing prices at Kaizen Bonsai... I love the amount you get for your money... I will need more Kyodama soon 😆 (just to be sure!) Awesome video... Also it doesn't take very long to rinse the pumice at all however can be used straight from the bag as it has all the volcanic goodness in there... I've stopped Rinsing mine now 👍🌵🌞🌵🌞🌵🌞

Thank you so much, Claire 😊 And you’re most welcome. Kaizen Bonsai’s prices are great, they will definitely be my go to place for the pumice and lava rock. I’m looking forward to trying out the Kyodama. I did rinse them off but was surprised just how little material came off them, certainly fine to use straight from the bag. Thank you for watching and commenting as always, from Edith & myself, have a wonderful evening 😊🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

Thank you so much Lyn 😊 Kaizen Bonsai’s prices are excellent, as I said in the video I was getting a similar size bag for £14.99 and now they’ve doubled it to £29.99, not paying that lol. Their pumice is of a higher quality as well and more consistent particle size. Looking forward to trying out the Akadama and Kyodama as well, and the Lapillo looks much nicer than the Scoria, looking forward to seeing how plants do in that as well. Hi Daz! First let me say this was a great and very useful video. It’s always good to experiment and keep adapting to have better and healthier plants. Pumice, lava rocks and akadama are available here but not kyodama. I didn’t use pumice and lava rocks before but after watching your 1st video on your cacti soil mix I changed. So I’m using these 3 with my cactus soil. Sorry I’m late but I had to do my work first. Love all the wonderful succulents towards the end of your video. Beautiful. I don’t have that many of them as I ALWAYS ALWAYS murder them. Have a fantastic Sunday , Daz! Keep up the good work!!

Kyodama looks very interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing how plants do in that when we do the experiment video. What a very useful video, Daz! 👍Thank you very much. I used kyodama on my bonsais tons of years ago but never thought about using it on my succulents and cacti , and seems to be perfect for what I need! I use pumice a lot, it's better than you ever could think, long term. Lapillo is great. I only find the big common lava rock, I use it at the bottom of the container and in my bigger pots as a topdressing and drainage. I would like to buy akadama in the future, looks fantastic in your videos ☺️. Have a nice week!🌺💚🌵☮️

Kyodama is what I need! Holds moisture but allows good air circulation. 🙂 This is a great informative video, Daz. I would love to try out new soil mixes but those are not easy to source here where I’m at. So thank you for conducting the experiment for us. 👍🏼 I am curious at how plants will survive in purely inorganic mix. Some growers that live in high humidity places use no organic material and they say it works for them. That would be my request for a mix to try if you still can include it.

I have started to do that with the pumice now yes, seems a waste throwing that away when it’s still perfectly good to use. I’ll probably do it with the lava rock as well. I’ll sieve most of the soil and other bits out and then use boiling water to sterilise the pumice/lava rock. I think Kaizen Bonsai sell a specific product to treat re-used pumice with as well. With any dusty substrate you should consider wetting it throughly to prevent that dust from going airborne and ending up in your lungs. With perlite it’s critical! That stuff is a massive health hazard when inhaled! Lots of other things may be dangerous to breathe in.

Akadama is probably the best soil you can have, the molecular make up is different from all other clay based soils because of its tubular based soil from the volcanic base, rather then sheet/ shelf type of clay based soil like molar clay etc. basically means roots will grow into the tubes of akadama and splitting the soil into smaller components forming smaller roots and therefore a more fibrous root structure. Yes there is an issue of freeze and thaw breakdown but I’m sure cacti don’t live outside to experience this. Molar clay will just not accept roots into their particles so will not not actively breakdown, it wont form a fibrous root structure and prevent ramification in branch structure. It’s a trade off for price and root structure. I’m into bonsai and came across this video researching Kyodama for my trees. I’ve spent lots of years and lots of money on my trees and the £10 a bag (shop around) difference between kitty litter (molar clay) and akadama is a no brainier for me and my best trees, pre bonsai get dirt and stones for drainage lol. But once they are in pots there’s nothing for me but akadama and a mix of pumice and Kyodama depending on the species of tree vs the equivalent. Look at Japan, some of the best ramification on trees you will see and the world is slowly catching up, I walked round a bonsai nursery of a guy who has been doing bonsai for over 25 years, never used akadama and to be honest it showed. They was amazing don’t get me wrong, but what the roots party to, the branches up top will copy. Research is key on your plants and what you want from it and where you keep it. Dude that was long, I’m sorry
