Sorry this video came out late, I had a school project to finish and couldn't edit it in time. But it's here now so...yeah.
On October 9, 2006 a BNSF coal train crashed into some stationary freight cars at Cactus, Texas. The crew of the train thankfully survived with minor injuries. The cause was the brakeman of a local train not resetting the switch as well as the engineer, conductor, and dispatcher improperly clearing their track warrant by not confirming the switch was set right.
NOT ALL THE CONTENT IS MINE (all the random BNSF trains are mine)! CREDIT GOES TO THE RIGHTFUL OWNERS!

I just had this happen last week. The brakeman of the switching job didn't reline the switch and a manifest freight from Reading to Philadelphia ended up on the Manayunk industrial track. Fortunately, a quick emergency brake application averted disaster.

In dark track warrant territory all it takes is one little error for a disaster. There are no signals to warn a train what is up ahead. The dispatcher should have never given a warrant to the coal train through that switch.

railroads other than BNSF: Well that locomotive is a goner BNSF: that's nothing we can't fix.
@TrainingMacro
@TrainingMacro 4 жыл бұрын
As long as most of the core components are still working it remains fixable. The head locomotive got a frontal hit which means the engine and alternator are protected. They likely survived that collision. What I wonder is... where's the breakman supposed to be? And isn't there a good chance that that second train arrives before any personnel make it back to the switch to throw the switch? I suppose you could leave someone behind but that seems like a gigantic waste of fuel and that guy still has to walk all the way back to the engine(s).

I saw this same thing happen on a shortline railroad. A maintenance of way crew had a hi-rail dump truck on the track. They put it in a siding and forgot to line the switch for the main. A local came through at 25mph and saw the switch not properly lined. They tried to stop the short train of storage tank cars but hit the dump truck on the siding. I filmed the train, the damaged truck and a fire truck responding to the scene. The crew asked me not to post the video or pics so I never posted anything. I only mention it now since the crew has moved on to other jobs. It was never on the news or in the paper. It happened about 2 years ago

Protect the tarin from this switches could be as simple as emiting a beacon in on freq if normal and different freq if not. With a range enugh to allow the train to execute a full stop. I mean, nothing really expnsive that can be retrofited and you dont require any signal network

To be fair, sometimes when something looks realy messed up, its sometimes mostly cosmetic and body damage. So long as the major parts are fine like the engine, traction motors, and frame are in decent shape than its not too bad to fix it up. Though sometimes railroads will still right it off if they can't afford to rebuild something like that when they could just deal with the loss or buy another locomotive on the used market for cheaper.

Typical! Operators choose an unsafe design to cut cost, then blame some worker's minor mistake when the inevitable happens. An all-mechanical signal box that controls the switches as well as a couple of semaphore signals could be set up with little expense. This would be a great improvement over having folks run up and down the yard to flip switches and leaving engineers guessing what position they are in. The mechanical signal box could use a kind of punch card system to verify all switches and signals are in the correct position, eliminating a lot of paperwork for the signalman. Or just, you know, put up some proper signals and link up the switches to the traffic controller's office. These systems pay for themselves through improved safety and efficiency.

Your information great man, but I was wondering if you could look into finding some better music for your videos instead of the default iMovie and sneaky snitch, it just doesn’t feel appropriate towards this train crash setting. Maybe some relaxing, chill vibe music that is copyright free. Just look around on the net and you’ll find something. But your info is really well presented, I enjoyed your one on BNSF 4479 as well, the head-on with the driver on MDMA
