@@breadfan9 It's more of a question why society has failed them. If you come to the desert and meet some of these folks, you will 100% get it. Tired of playing the game. It's not for everyone, but worth it for the space and views and space alone...🌵🤠

The wind is as miserable as the heat. You're going to spend More money to live isolated. All necessities cost more. you may save money on housing. Aside from that you might love it. Winters with little wind aren't any big deal. Its quiet and you can see.for miles.

Over 100 is NOTHING. Haha It’s that way all summer in areas like Ridgecrest CA, Boron CA, & Bakersfield. Death Valley gets up over 111 all the time in the summer. It got up all the way to 134 F.

Outstanding. Being a Californian, motorcyclist and something of a desert rat, I’ve visited the town several times over the years. I’ve entered up over “the falls” route as well as from the highway. Its a fascinating place to be sure. You managed to find some of the most interesting folks to talk with, as you always do. Well done.

Very interesting. I happen to live at the mine that was spoken of 4 days a week. What was not mentioned is the lack of light pollution out here. It's a star gazers paradise.

I was stationed just South of there at Ft Irwin and in 1997 out in the field there I had a front row seat to the two comets (Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake) that were visible in the night sky for months with the naked eye. I saw them even better when I viewed them through my night vision goggles.

The lack of light pollution in much of the Mojave Desert is inargueable. I could add that the desert is a photographer's paradise; photographers are thick on the ground out here.

I hope this place never goes away, it's a very rare thing to find a place that is as free as this town. I've lived in Maine for over 20 years and have never seen a town that is not embroiled in politics one way or another. To know that a free town still exists in our United States is a relief to this tired soul.

When people around me tries to describe Americans based their narrow minded view when reading about world politics I often bring up these kind of warm, wholesome and free-minded people that I usually bump into when traveling around in these wonderful parts of the states such as Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah. I meet them outside gas stations, at motels, in roadhouse restaurants etc. etc. The American people is sure as hell not the government. This is along with the nature and scenery one of the reasons why I love the US and take the early road-trips around in the area, not for the shopping malls, the amusement parks or any of the plastic surreal parts of the country which usually is what people from Europe refer to when describing their trips to the US! When people say that they love the Italians or the French mentality they’ve never been around to meet the authentic Americans /Love from Sweden 🇸🇪

Sweden 🇸🇪 has my heart! I’ve only traveled out of the states to two locals , Peru and Sweden x2. There is something about Sweden that feels like home to me. I think I belong there😂. I felt like the people were fairly “ closed off” but yet helpful and friendly when needed?. I feel like when you actually do befriend someone there and gain their trust, you have a friend for life. I made a hand full of lifelong friends while visiting the Bushcraft Festavelan even if we only keep in touch via social. I attended the festival twice (should have been an annual visit) but then the world fell apart and I don’t think I’ll ever get to go back. That breaks my heart. I visited Stockholm and Uppsala and some surrounding countryside. I loved the slower pace of life and the way people seemed fully engaged in what ever they were doing , especially when conversing with someone. It’s been a few years but I don’t remember seeing everyone’s heads buried in thier cell phones.

Welcome to THAT club. After years of wrangling, I’ve managed to dump the burden if victimhood and have a very blessed life. Part of the process was to figure out that though I learned to live with F*ck heads as a child I didn’t have to continue that into my adulthood. Maybe that was the lesson the whole time.

My grandfather ran the Morningstar mine in the Mojave preserve when I was a kid and took me through this Ghost town of people once. I was amazed how people could live in such ungodly forgiving wasteland.But then again alot the miners lived in sheet metal shacks so these people are definitely living better then original settlers

@Hailey It’s really hypocritical to be so anti-mining, but want to preserve an old mining town. He is just one of a long list of edgy go-getters that wants to turn an old ghost town into his hipster bed and breakfast. It would be nice if one of these owners of Cerro Gordo, that supposedly care about the place and area so much, would clean up the MASSIVE pile of waste and toxic tailings that are littering his property…..and ACTIVELY leeching into the waterways. Nah…don’t worry about the environmental waste you just bought….go build an air B&B. That REALLY gives back to the environment. At least that Canadian Mining company he sabotaged would have actually HAD to lean up the 100 years of waste….we know hipster dude wont.

Funny, I was born in Keeler and my parents soon moved Bishop, one of the town's people shopping places. We left California in the middle 50s and now I live in Arizona. I am certainly fascinated with the old mining towns. I love watch the Cerro Gordo video near that area also. It amazes me that people live in the hottest place in America. I spent 3 weeks traveling the country last August. My wife and I were trying to hit as many mountain biking destinations as possible. It made me realize I'm definitely about this life. We're not able to do it full time right now because of our jobs, but we're planning another 3 week trip, and I think we might buy the RV this time instead of renting.

I was able to find the location just by what was disclosed in the video. I live in Texas. If you really want to keep locations "secret", I would recommend editing out obvious giveaways. Interesting video, enjoyed it. Next time I visit the famous valley, I'll try to make it there.

It's so interesting hearing people talk about this little town. My grandparents still own property here. My grandpa was a miner there and that's where my mom was raised. Oh the stories I've heard. Going up to their old house at the mine riddled with bullet holes. Their property is actually shown in this video. It's awesome. Hearing the conversation over the hippies and rednecks is the truth. My grandpa told storied about always keeping guns because that's how bad the fued was.

The desert is beautiful and I love to drive through it, but I do not want to live in it like these people do. Its hot enough in Phoenix and there are way too many snakes and scorpions here...I can't imagine what they are like there. I love small town, rural living, but in greener places.

I am quite familiar with the town. I have done a considerable amount of exploration to include several mining claims just south of this town. In my early life I lived in a small desert town in North Central Nevada, I love it high and dry and with few primates around. Nevada and a few parts of remote California are still my favorite. I was a long time friend of Gordon Newell and his wife. Several times he invited me to go there and sculpt, something I did before I got a "real" job. Interesting "interview". Thanks RIP Gordon Newell

As a kid growing up in Tucson and all that surrounds it, late 1950's to late 1960's, I truly discovered the meaning of love. I actually fell in love with my desert Southwest. It is the place most closely associated with my heart and soul. My dream was to eventually retire on the desert there. I guess we shall see... ❤ 🏜

Funny thing is that man showing you around is actually a millionaire. I met that man back in the mid 80's, we hung out for a bit and then he just sort of disappeared. I'd love to reconect with him again, we had a lot of laughs together. He's a good dude!

You cover the life well. I traveled the states in different cars for for 6 years and lived on a sailboat for 3, then met a girl and moved to her in Norway to raise a son and daughter, then moved onboard a boat again for 10 years after our divorce, but I couldn’t of been able to live here if I hadn’t had that mental mindset from my travels to be able to stay. Traveling gives you strong survival skills.

I know this town. Out of respect I will not give the name. Ive been near here so many times going thru Lone Pine. The towns folk are exceptional. I actually stay at the Dow Villa Motel on Main St in Lone Pine. An excellent place to stay. Great piece you and wife did on them. Good interviews and great filming.

My buddy’s dad used to grade the road to that town. He took us out there one day to show us. Having lived in CA my whole life up to then I had no idea it was there. My friend’s dad died a few years ago. I have never met anyone willing to make the drive with me or even interested in it beside myself.

Hello Peter ,, A wonderful episode, This spot is similar to many spots here that we have it in Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 We have many villages and desert deserts in which very few people live. It's charming, somehow helps to heal, but at the same time a little dangerous. Thank you for a great episode!

I 100% want to move here. We spent much of my childhood traveling through the New Mexico, California and Colorado in an old camper trailer. I've always done well in the wide open.

Death Valley is amazing. I loved camping out there in an RV with my family when I was a kid. The desert is beautiful and peaceful. Sometimes you see Coyotes or other wild animals but the night is really quiet and its interesting to see nature that hasn't been completely developed.

@@waynewhitworth4932 It's "beautiful" in a different way. Sure, the desert is not like the mountains, beaches, or fall colored rolling hills of the Appalachias. You have to be from the area or have lived in the desert to appreciate it. However, I encourage you to look up places in Utah. Badlands National Park is incredible. Never been there, but I want to visit someday. Arches National Park is amazing too. I would call those places "beautiful" because of how unique the landscape is. The California high deserts are rather boring though. I can attest to that since I'm out of SoCal. The Mojave is quite barren except for places like Joshua Tree and Anza-Borrego. The Sonoran desert of Arizona has a lot of amazing sights too. Sedona is really cool. Took a family trip there many years ago. There is a lot of life in the desert, especially in our North American deserts. You just need to know where to look. On the flip side, I don't like the coast/ocean because I find it "boring" like you do with the deserts. You have two views, open empty water and land to your left/right. SoCal has mundane coasts out here, but I do admit that the Northern California coast and the coasts of Oregon are absolutely amazing. Those coasts are stunning. Just my 00.02.

I love that place! I remember watching Rose paint the front of the dance hall years ago. She was so nice, as well as the only one around. The waterfall was beautiful, and the cemetery was so interesting. Thanks for sharing this!

I've been to the waterfall once, in 2014. The trail to it got wiped out by the August 2022 Flash Flood, so it's not accessible at the moment, but I assume the Park Service will repair the trail and open it up again at some point in the next few months. I've never visited the town, but it's on my bucket list. There are several little towns in Nevada along US-95 that are similar, like Goldfield, Mina and Luning. No services other than electric power. No gas station or grocery store closer than 50 miles away, yet a few dozen people hang on in these places. Must take a very special breed to live in such remote places.

I worked at Edwards AFB which is in the high desert country, known as the Moja Desert. The vast desert experience taught me that I was truly insignificant. Yet the beauty and majesty of the desert night sky never failed to hold me in awe.

I was just there for a weekend trip, eating lunch at Bishop and other places. It's fascinating to me how people can organize their lives in the middle of nowhere. Death Valley has its unique vibe, so thank you for sharing. Great way to understand the conditions there.

My grandfather lived out there. He liked Scott’s Castle. He ended up spending his last 15 years or so in Slab City. But he was happy out there

My wife and I are searching such a place with a Cemetery. I am 83 and wife 72 with Alzheimer's and just want to be left alone from everyone. Everyone else trys to rule your lives. We own our California Home and can afford to buy a piece of land and have a Motor Home. We feel we have as good of a chance to live without society as we do without it.
