Call Me by Your Name (Italian: Chiamami col tuo nome) is a 2017 coming-of-age romantic drama film directed by Luca Guadagnino. Its screenplay, by James Ivory, who also co-produced, is based on the 2007 novel of the same title by André Aciman. The film is the final installment in Guadagnino's thematic "Desire" trilogy, after I Am Love (2009), and A Bigger Splash (2015). Set in 1983 in northern Italy, Call Me by Your Name chronicles the romantic relationship between a 17-year-old, Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), and Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate-student assistant to Elio's father Samuel (Michael Stuhlbarg), an archaeology professor. The film also stars actresses Amira Casar, Esther Garrel, and Victoire Du Bois.

This was the first movie I saw Timothee Chalamet in and I think it was his breakthrough role. He's excellent in it. He speaks different languages and, taking his name into account, as well I thought he was a French actor. lol. Michael Stuhlbarg as Timothee's father has an excellent scene as well towards the end when he's giving him some heartfelt advice.

Yes I loved both of their performances! I just wish I cared more about the relationship. I just felt it was poorly established and made it hard to care much. Love the setting though!

I agree 100%. The movie is not bad by any means but it was so hyped back then that, when I finally saw it, I couldn't help but feel a bit dissappointed.

I was so bummed. I'm gonna revisit it at some point, but I really don't get the hype.

I think one reason why it was hyped was because of the style. If one watches a lot of foreign films the more slow paced, beautiful cinematography, realism will not be anything out of the ordinary. However, because this film was mainstream for those only used to flashy Hollywood films, or the bad low budget queer films, this film would stand out as "wow".

I think that the relationship building slowly and Elio’s admiration being so overwhelming was the point of the film. At least in my eyes it’s meant to show the devastation of a first love at that age, especially with a large age gap.

I get it coming from his end, but I don't get that from Oliver's side. It never feels like a love story to me which is ultimately how the film portrays it.
