Another most excellent, INFORMATIVE video, ma'am. Yep, Open Farm sounds just like ANY OTHER "designer" pet food company, out there to get us to buy their products based on smoke & mirrors. I guess they're ignorant to the fact, that the more they tap dance around your questions, the more they convince us not to buy their products. Keep it up and thank you for KEEPING US INFORMED. Your channel is invaluable to us and our 4-legged family members.

Great explanation of pet food terms. Fancy Feast Kitten was the first wet food I tried with my two. It made Colbie throw up. I had been feeding their mama cat Rachael Ray, both wet and dry. I switched to that for the kittens. What I have learned, from you, since, most commercial cat food is so high in nutrients that adult food is fine for kittens. Happy Purrsday!

I am so stressed out. I just ordered a back of Open Farm. It’s suppose to be here tomorrow. My fur baby has been eating Hill Science and doing fine. I just wanted to feed her better quality food. I want her to live along time. What should I feed her to keep her healthy? My husband and I are disabled at the moment due to a car accident and both have had back surgeries recently so we are not able to get her out and run around. I feel guilty for that. Please provide guidance on what is the best to feed her or even keep her on the Hills Science?

Great video! Thank you so much for sharing! I have a question. Isn't the kibble heated up so high that all nutrients are lost and have to be added back in? Would that make the "meat" ingredient pointless to look at? Should we just primarily focus on the mineral content of the kibble? I sadly fell for this marketing ploy and was thinking I was doing good by making sure the meat was the first ingredient. The more I learn, I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't focus on the "meat" ingredient at all.

The nutrition is not burnt out, that is another marketing ploy by “fresh” food companies. At a very common sense level why would a company buy meet just to burn it up and add it back, it absolutely contributes to nutrition. They factor all aspects of the processing in when they make the diet and what the final nutrition profile will be. If you are interested more on that process then check out the first chapter in SACN good explication of extrusion and what happens to the nutrients in that process.

Dr. Rea would you be able to do a review on Purina? I contacted them today and they said they do not have phosphorus or calcium levels available for their dry cat food. And they also said they were not permitted to share the nutritional information with me when I asked for it. This is baffling to me? Why would they not be able to share this information? How are nutrient levels proprietary information? Perhaps they misunderstood me. But this information should be readily available for the consumer. Especially when you have aging cats. All they were willing to give me was the minimum and maximums which are on the product label and website. Both of which do not include calcium and phosphorus.

She said they do not have their nutrient levels on a dry matter basis but rather the Min/Max. She did give me the levels and both CA/PH were 1.2% and up for this formula, which is too high for my senior kitty anyways. I’m glad I got this information but it’s still not on a dry matter basis but I guess if I wanted to I could do the conversions myself. Very different than RC and Hills as they have no problem sending me this information.

Hi, Doctor Rea!! Excellent video. If you don’t mind, I need a little advice with choosing between 2 foods for my 15 yr old pup. I am stuck between Hill's Science Diet Adult 7+ Small & Mini Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food and Royal Canin® Size Health Nutrition™ Small Aging 12+ Dry Dog Food. I asked for both of their nutritional info in a dry matter basis in exact percentages, no min or max, and the two are seemingly wonderful options. However, there are a few points I am concerned about. First, I love the way Hill’s guaranteed analysis in a dry matter basis, is readily available on their site for all of their products, and for that particular one, their Protein is at 21.5%, Calcium at 0.8%, Phosphorus at 0.69%, and Crude Fiber at 5%. According to the charts, Calcium should be at 0.75% max, so they are slightly over. Now the issue here lies in comparison to Royal Canin, in which, for their particular food, they informed me that the Protein content is at 27.17%, Calcium at 0.73%, and Phosphorus at 0.53%. They are a little over in Protein, but are amazing in the Mineral department. They also gave me two answers for Fiber that I am confused about-Crude Fiber at 1.63% but 7.85% total Dietary Fiber. Looking at the senior dog chart, it should be more than 2% Fiber, and my dog personally needs as much Fiber as she can get, or she has tummy/stool problems, and I don’t understand which answer is more applicable. I am unsure of what the better option would be considering all of these factors-I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this, Doctor Rea!!
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 2 ай бұрын
I think both excellent options. Remember you can always add fiber if needed if that’s a deal breaker. The numbers I give are ideal, not absolute so I think given how close both are, I’d consider secondary factors such as availability, price, and pet preference and tolerance

Kinda confused by the point of this video... It was very helpful to learn about the meaning of the terms! And perhaps that was the only purpose, but how is that actually supposed to help in making educated decisions about the dog food we buy when they are basically all using that same term(s)? Is there something else we should be looking at to gauge the content of the food? I also am a bit confused by the specific mention of Open Farms being shady about sharing their recipe details. Was this mentioned because you HAVE been able to get this same information from OTHER brands? I hope this doesn't come off combative, because that isn't my intention! I appreciate the information shared. I just feel like I was left with more questions than answers.
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 25 күн бұрын
The point is to show how marketing works and that a pet food company uses certain terms for specific reasons that have a meaning different from what the consumer may think. The words aren’t used randomly. The point is to educate the consumer on what the pet food companies already know and use so they are on the same level. You should always be gauging the food on the nutrient value, not the ingredient list or the “order” of the ingredient list, that is manipulated intentionally in a purposeful way by pet food marketing.

When it says "chicken and oats recipe" does that mean it could be 1% chicken and 24% oats? Or 25% chicken and another 25% oats? Or does it just refer to meat protein? It is a kind of useless term, though, unless it is by dry matter volume.
@AnimalDocRea

According to AAFCO who sets the rules for labeling. It is any listed ingredient must comprise the 25% on a dry matter basis of all the ingredients. So yes, it would be both chicken and oat combined to make at least 25% but could be up to 70%

I was reading that 4D meat is typically found in meat meal, if used, but it's rendered so it is safe for the animal. I'm curious as to what this means exactly. I know it's at least partially cooked to kill anything nasty. I guess I'm really curious if there is a huge difference health wise between a meat/ meat and bone meal based food vs the more clearly defined meat based food.
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 2 ай бұрын
It would boil down to the minerals. High minerals indicated poor quality and low mineral in line with the standards indicates higher quality
@blissfuljoy6049
@blissfuljoy6049 2 ай бұрын
@@AnimalDocRea But the higher mineral s wouldn't cause problems unless there are other health issues that would be aggravated by this right? Because they have to stay under certain amounts anyway? I've been looking on Purina's research site and noticed they have a cat study showing how certain additives like prebiotics increase longevity in older cats. It doesn't mention dogs but I'm guessing it might have a similar effect. It doesn't say if their control is just cat chow or what it is but it had me wondering about additives vs sources of meat. Are the minerals in Dog and Cat chow that different from Purina One?
@AnimalDocRea
@AnimalDocRea 2 ай бұрын
I mean you can use minerals to determine the quality of meat source. Low quality mean sources have high minerals because they have like bone and hooves. Foods with properly sourced minerals more than likely have cleaner meat sources. I’m responding to your question about how quality of protein source: actual mineral numbers from a nutritional analysis standpoint is different topic
@blissfuljoy6049
@blissfuljoy6049 2 ай бұрын
@@AnimalDocRea I get what you mean by meat and bone meal having probable higher mineral levels and this being less desirable. But at the end of the day, is it actually causing problems in most animals? Are dogs living longer on Iams, Hills, Purina One/pro plan vs Dog Chow or Pedigree? Purina and Mars market against their own brands in a way. I know some of the ingredient differences make coats shiner and whatnot, but how impactful are the different formulas longevity wise? If everything is in balance then what does it matter what the meat is? Actually, Purina would do itself a lot of good if they showed more factual data showing how long animals live on their products, considering how many "boutique" brands are out to trash them. I hope I'm making sense 😆. I've grown a disdain for fluff marketing in all areas of life at this point...lol.
