Calor Gas Discontinued. Underslung LPG Tank the solution? What are the options?
In this video, we'll take a look at the recent news that Calor Gas has discontinued their smaller gas bottles, and what the options are for campervan, motorhome and camping enthusiasts who rely on these products. We'll also discuss the latest rumour regarding Campingaz, is this true? Surely this would have an even greater impact, especially for those who travel into Europe and campers!
The news from Calor Gas is "From 1st February 2023, the Cube, 3.9kg Propane, 4.5kg Butane, 6Lite Propane and 12kg Butane will be discontinued."
There are other options and I will discuss them here.
Is Flogas the answer?
Who else has heard the Campingaz RUMOUR ?
Have you considered a Underslung LPG tank? Could this be your best option in the long term?
Your onboard gas locker on your VW Transporter Campervan or Motorhome may be too small for a bigger bottle, therefore you may need to look at other options.
I personally have used Campingaz for many years and it would be a shame to see it discontinued in the UK as it's such a compact easy to transport portable gas bottle. Albeit more expensive than other options.

I bought a VW Transporter T6 Kombi Highline van 140bhp diesel SWB with tailgate.
Slowly turning it into a camper van / day van with bed. I will also need something for cooking, cooling, sleeping, drinking ?? Choices to be made.
I have lots more to do though, I have a new electrical system, using Victron components and a Lithium LIFEPO4 battery, so I obviously need to install some power devices. I have a new sound system, with Focal speakers and ibus 2.1 amp, Playstation PS4, which will be removable, TV's on headrests.
Lots for me to look forward too and it would be nice to take you on the journey.

FYI. LPG is a general term for Propane and/or Butane.

I fitted a gaslow 2.7th refillable log tank and it’s works great. Costs a few pound to fill up which is key for me as the van has a propex gas heater so goes thought a fair bit

As a full timer I have LPG refillable , great system saves a lot of money. But big problem soon it’s getting harder to find places to fill up. In winter I use 20lites a week. To change to calor gas would cost me over twice the money. You suggest getting Gas checked every year, have you found a place to do this. Everyone I phone says no there to busy to fit job in. I’ve tried to no avail for 3 years.

Fuel depots I have found can provide and also leisure van retailers are becoming more common. Regarding the gas checked, this can form part of a habitation check. Caravan and motorhome dealers should be able to do this

Has the supply of refillable gas got worse in the last year? Seems like many garages are replacing autogas with EV charging points.

They are talking of doing away with LPG at filling stations within the next 2 years!! This is getting stupid I don't get it the demand is there within the leasure industry is this a ploy to get everyone to go full electric?

Yes pump numbers are reducing and being replaced by EV chargers. There has been an increase in new LPG pumps at leisure vehicle dealers, so hopefully more will install pumps so LPG is easily accessible

I'm considering an underslung tank on my T25, but the big problem is that it would be a bit too low. I know that there's a lot of Westfalias out there with them fitted historically, but my tape measure tells me that I can't manage the 200mm clearance which seems to be required.

Wouldn’t bother, less and less retailers doing pump LPG. Watched so many similar videos to this and have found Flogas as the best option. Spoke to Flogas depot in Wrexham and they said Flogas are not as difficult to find and the network is only going to increase due to Calor basically helping them to corner the small Campervan gas bottle market

MFG are, however there are plenty of other suppliers and depots. And this is why some in the leisure industry have started having their own tanks installed. There is so much change going to happen this decade with petrol/diesel/gas/electric who knows what the future holds.

Buy a Coleman petrol stove, fuel readily available in every country. Carried in lightweight plastic container. Mega hot heat output. Cook outdoors you are 'camping' after all. I've used one for 30 years, couldn't be doing with cooking on a ring with the output of a big candle. Don't like cooking smells in my upholstery and clothes either.

The thing I wonder is that how a mixture of gas evaporates equally during all the lifetime of a gas bottle. LPG is a mixture of butane and propane. When you start using it, since propane has a greater "desire" to evaporate, I assume it will evaporate quicker than butane cooling the liquid content and further making the evaporation of butane difficult. I notice that when I start using a fresh camp canister, the flame is pale blue (mostly propane is burning) while towards the end of the canister, the flame color becomes turquoise like (butane is burning now). I kindly suggest to use propane (like many US people use), if possible.

Flogas are going to increase sales after Calor kindly gave them the market for smaller Camper bottles

@@StaycationLifestyle I managed to get 2 4.5kg Calor and have one in the stores so I’m lucky. Trying car boots for a Flogas bottle for future use

It will take ten years to pay for itself that’s the issue we fitted a few in the past great but costly at nearly £600 for a 15 L tank

They are being replaced by EV charging in some cases, however there are gas depots that can be filled from along with retailers now installing their own tanks

It is true. Some are being removed to be replaced by EV chargers. However more leisure outlets are having tanks installed.

Great timing for me this Video, I have a 907 Gas Bottle, although safe for now it does struggle at lower temperatures (Even with a insulation jacket on). As I’m off to the Caravan & Motorhome show in a few weeks, I can weigh up all the options you’ve suggested. What are you siding towards, Underslung?

Is gas as important these days, with the cost of solar generators coming down (or at least the capacity / £ ratio) maybe an induction hob is the answer?

Induction hobs are popular, but most conversions are still spec’d with a gas system of some kind.

I have the underslung LPG tank on my transporter. The BBQ point is great and I use it for my cadac and a Kamper geyser for hot water. The only thing you didn’t cover is filling up. In recent years less and less filling stations are selling LPG, leading me to be concerned that the supply will dry up.

That is true. Some fuel stations are replacing LPG with EV charging facilities. However I understand due to this, camper/camping and motor dealers have started to instal their own filling facilities.

@@johnwebster2263 They are certainly becoming more popular, however most only use them for “on grid” camping. Although there has been a big increase over the last year of people buying portable power stations, to have 240v off grid.

Converting to an underslung LPG tank is actually quite poor advice. More and more stations are doing away with LPG because it doesn’t bring in revenue like it used to, plus garages are installing EV charge points where the LPG onsite tanks used to sit. Really think about it before you commit.

Leisure dealers are having tanks installed to help with this. And fuel depots also provide access for fill ups. Cost is much cheaper and lasts along time.

Waste of time putting underslung gas tanks on nowadays. Less and less places to refill. Autotrail have removed theirs and made space for a 3.9kg which now is going to cause another issue with availability. Not heard about Camping Gaz being discontinued. The new Camping Gaz cylinders have a new UK mark on them.

They are reducing at fuel stations as EV taking their place. Gas suppliers will still have tanks and some dealers are now looking to have their own for leisure customers. I would be surprised if it did happen with Campingaz, it’s such a convenient product. I use a 907 for one of my stoves

We have gas delivered to the house to a 1200l tank. The lorry's have an acme fitting so can fill your under slung tank.

The depot where the trucks come from the may have a pump but the trucks would give you a bit of gas if you went there or that's what they told me.
