Camelback Mountain located in Phoenix, Arizona is the tallest mountain within the city. It is located right in Phoenix and a great morning (or afternoon) hike. There are two ways to summit this beautiful mountain. Today I am bringing you along as I hike up Camelback Mountain through the most popular Cholla trail.
Address to hike Camelback Mountain - Cholla trailhead: 6131 E Cholla Ln, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253

I hiked piestewa peak first and it was tough. Camelback mountain was the toughest craziest by far. I hiked the Superstition from the Peralta trail which is longer but far easier. Camelback Echo Canyon is for the experienced for sure.

I'm from the state of Michigan. I've hiked rugged trails in the porky pine mountains as well as Ontario Canada, etc. I was in Phoenix Az in late January 2022 and hiked the Echo trail The Echo trail is the most challenging hike i have ever accomplished That was a great presentation and video of Camel Back Mountain.

Many years ago, there was a special place about halfway up the Cholla Trail where many folks of kindred minds would gather to watch the Fourth of July fireworks displays throughout the city - you could easily see them from here, and the evening was simply delightful. Now as to the hike: After you've done the "traditional 'Echo' route" a few zillion times (wink!), this one gives you a really interesting alternative view of the mountain. It's of comparable difficulty, but very different and therefore interesting geography. You approach the summit along a "knife edge." (But: no serious "exposure.") On quite a few occasions, we'd leave a car at both ends and do this as a "thru hike," enjoying both experiences, usually in the early morning before convening for breakfast. So - if you live in the area, as we did, I commend both very-different routes to your enjoyment.

I love hiking in the Phoenix area. I just Vlogged the first part of the Javelina Trail and Mormon Loop and it was amazing. I plan to post the conclusion to that hike soon. This looks like an intense, albeit short hike. It goes up really fast! I hate when I can't find parking and have to walk to the trail head...that is the part that kills me at the end.

Is mormon loop on south mountain? I did that earlier this year, was a really scenic hike. Up to fat mans pass and the natural tunnel. Was great!! Yeah I don’t like walking to trail head either. Lol.

Did the crazy suicidal Echo trail (extremely steep and difficult) in February ‘16 everyone has to use all fours like an animal. Took so long to complete lost track of time, descent was probably difficult as ascent if not more.

There actually is a route on camelback called suicide direct (i think that’s it) but its not the echo canyon trail. Its only for experienced climbers though. Lot’s of vert and exposure.

Do you not use trekking poles? I just started using a single pole a few years ago. It helped so much, I bought a set a few weeks ago. Can’t wait to try them out.
@LauraLeanne
@LauraLeanne 4 жыл бұрын
I actually could go on and on with this topic. I rarely use them but I love them when it's steeper going downhill, especially if there are loose rocks and you are seeing where to step. They also save the knees a little! When I'm out with my dog I have to keep him on a leash a lot of the time so can't really use them and they can't just go on a carry-on. All in all, I'm an advocate of them!

Hi Joel, we learnt from doing this hike several times that bringing hiking poles on this particular trail is not soo convenient, because a lot of sections require some scrambling and using hands to climb

Planning on doing this hike this winter. Saddly not much trail etiquette from the passer Byers 😒
@LauraLeanne
@LauraLeanne 3 жыл бұрын
It's a very crowded trail. I also agree about the etiquette. You typically get that when it's simply a bucket list phoenix item instead of a love for hiking ☹️

So, I am not afraid of heights, I am afraid of edges and ledges, particularly when heights are involved. How does this trail rate for those who may have issues, like me?
@coldcreative4601
@coldcreative4601 2 жыл бұрын
I know it's a year late, but this one might not be for you. Lots of exposed edges and ledges and cliffs and some parts where you're on a pretty narrow stretch of rock
@ConquerYou
@ConquerYou Жыл бұрын
It’s not too bad. There aren’t ‘edges’ with crazy drop offs. But it is up almost every step. Boulders. You probably would use hands a bunch of times. The only real edge drop off is at top on north side, but u don’t have to get close to it if u don’t want to. It is an intense workout though. I wouldn’t recommend in summer months.

Hi. I am almost 60 but not in great shape due to arthritis. But I love hiking and always did. I was at Camelback few weeks ago and I went up till very rocky path and turned around. There is great view. I was by myself and they were rescuing a hiker that day. See how much she can go.
