Hello KZfaq,
Today I'm using my British Army mess tins to camp cook toad in the hole without an oven by placing them on my folding grill using the second tin as a lid and placing charcoal on top for all around cooking
Ingredients:
Cumberland Pork Sausages
Cooking oil
Batter, 4 tablespoons (40g) of flour, pinch of salt, add a beaten egg and 4 tablespoons (75ml) of water and 4 tablespoons (75ml) of milk then mix thoroughly
Folding Camping BBQ and grill;

This video inspired me to make TITH using sausies from the UK Gourmet, a store in Bethel, Connecticut that sells all things British. I have made it nearly every weekend in 2021, using an onion gravy recipe i found online somewhere (mustard + HP). I even picked up some British mess tins from 1987 and 1988. What a "great bit of kit." Cheers mate.

As a yank married to a lovely English girl I have had toad in the hole and it is indeed delicious. Full English and bacon butties (sp?) fried eggs with chips and bean are right up there too. Heard people here complain that English cooking is bland but they're the same ones likely voting for Biden if you get my drift so take no notice. Good hearty working mans food. I'm going to try this in my Czech mess kit.

Never heard of it, but it looked quite tasty! I just ordered some knock off British army mess tins. I hope they are as good. I will give your recipe a go myself! Although, I am unsure if we have the same sausages here in the States. When I lived in New Zealand, I would eat the British style sausages over there and found them quite bland, but I developed a taste for them after a while. Thanks for sharing!😊

Good Posting .. thanks. My Army Mess Tins (we called them 'Dixies' in the SADF) still do regular service .. at least once a week. Stoves and heat sources include a folding Esbit Stove (my original issue from 1968), Trangia Burner, Gel Fuel, a myriad of 'Home Grown' Meths Stoves, Optimus 8R Hunter Benzine Cooker, Bushbox LF Wood Stove with varying fuels .. wood, charcoal and more. A great set of kit .. much ignored and underrated by the 'Outdoor Community'. Being Aluminium, I have kept them out of a base wood fire .. so that after 40+ years, they're still in pretty good nick. Not my Original '68 Issue. In '78-ish, I exchanged those for a New Set as the Original, being Nickel Plated (I think?) where looking rather tatty. Must try the Toad in the Hole Recipe .. thanks. Take care ..
