Welcome to Anglesey! This island off the north-coast of Wales is popular amongst UK holidaymakers and with good reason. From the hidden beaches in beautiful coves to the iconic lighthouses and host of seabirds, there really is something for everyone in Anglesey, as I am about to find out.
But getting here wasn't all plain sailing!
In June 2021 I was invited to go camping in Anglesey, Wales. I can’t lie to you - I was apprehensive. Travel in the UK is something I have rarely considered in the past, opting instead for distant destinations. Would Anglesey satisfy my need for adventure?
In this vlog we set up camp in Church Bay, on the west coast of Anglesey, Wales. Overlooking a beautiful beach, it is the perfect camping destination.
However, we receive some surprise visitors in the night…
One of the main draws to Anglesey in the spring is South Stack Cliff Nature Reserve as spring is the time where countless seabirds including gulimotts, razorbills and puffins come to breed. Everyone is eager to spot a puffin but these iconic birds are in decline and with only 7 nesting in South Stack this year, finding one was harder than I could have imagined. Find out if we manage to locate any puffins in South Stack.

This year travel changed for all of us. At first, I really struggled to come to terms with the fact that overseas travel was banned in the UK. It felt like I was trapped in a dystopian novel. But in times of change you have to adapt. So I started to see more of the UK and the first stop was the Welsh island of Anglesey. I hope you enjoy this video about my time there! Next up on my list is Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Don't forget to subscribe if you want to see what I get up to there! 🤗

Really great opener to bring everyone up to speed! We totally feel you about kind of being bitter at times about only being able to travel locally... That beach is so picturesque, especially at sunset! We are both big fans of just about any beach though, lol, especially slow-motion puppies! 🐕 April's daughter loves hedgehogs! Super cute puffins--glad you got to see them!

Nice video, nice editing and story telling, it really looks professional. The camping site looks very safe and I love, you captured the sunset on the beach. The hedgehog ritual is interesting, I never see a hedgehog yet. from 5.13 onward the place looks so beautiful, the lighthouse and the sea birds, looks like you had a wonderful adventure.

You are not alone in the discovery that one's own country has a lot to offer. Since Covid-19 in Feb 2020 we haven't crossed any borders and have had a wealth of lovely places to visit right on our doorstep ( so to speak). I have googled a number of places to see how many overseas tourist visit there annually. If they find it important enough, maybe I should look closer. Like you, we keep discovering pearls. I'm glad you think so too. I love Wales. Spent 2 weeks there with my 'bestie' from New Zealand and were planning a return- till...well you know! My second 'adventure series' videos were from Wales. What a precious gift those Puffins were for you. A reward for going anyway when you really didn't feel like it. Lovely share, thank you. 💝🇳🇿🙋‍♀️🇳🇱

Kind of. The houses which you can see are holiday cottages. But the owners of the cottages and campsite do live in a house which is on-site. I was quite lucky to see the puffins. It was only because I got a tip-off from one of the staff members who told me where to look on the cliffs that I spotted them. Even so, the puffins probably aren't there all the time.

Thanks, Mike! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who tends to look abroad. I would definitely recommend Anglesey if you are planning to see more of the UK. I was worried it would be a bit too commercial as so many people tend to go but it was quiet, with parts definition of a sleepy seaside town. And that's not to say there wasn't much to do! I honestly wished I'd stayed longer as there were lots of beautiful walking trails. Where in the UK have you been thinking about visiting? I need to add more to my list too!

I felt the same way about exploring locally here in Canada, but have actually found some great areas. The campsite looked like it was someone's field. Is that a common type of campsite? How lucky were you!!! To see not 1 but 3 puffins. That must have been amazing 🙌
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is common for campsites in UK to be land owned by the local farmer. It's a nice way for them to make money from land that is just sitting there. I did feel really lucky to see those puffins! They're such adorable birds. I do hope their numbers increase.

Hey Ella. Do you have a video where you explain what you do for a living and whether your wanderlust / travel is a hobby, or a full time job?? I'm binge watching your videos and they are so wonderful but I'm wondering if it's your job or if it's just travel. I'm asking because lockdown and the pandemic has completely transformed my priorities and perspective on life, and I've stopped caring about my work and career. I just want to travel all day lol but I'm poor and have no money. Thanks a lot and best wishes"!
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Monika! Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to watch my videos and leave a comment. I don't have a video on this topic yet. I didn't think anyone would be interested in my content enough to know more about me and my circumstances so I am really pleased you are keen to know. The videos are just from my travels. I don't travel for work, although some trips I have taken have involved collaborations with hotels which took the pressure off funding the trips. I run my own e-commerce business from home alongside my partner. I spend most of my time working on my business but the beauty of having a business is that I can dictate my own hours and take time off when I need it. The other benefit is that most of it is remote working so my location can technically be anywhere in the world (as long as I have wifi!). I earn my money from this business and use it to travel whenever I can. I created my KZfaq channel as a hobby on the side as I love filming my trips! But I am getting to a point where I want to start earning money from it to cover the costs of my travels (allowing me to travel more). I would love to be able to travel more frequently and to get money for it would be the dream. It's great that you perspective has changed. The pandemic has done the same to me. I feel I didn't travel enough before and focussed too much on work. But it's taught me that you never know what's around the corner so you should enjoy the time you have now. What kind of job do you currently have? And what would be the ideal situation for you moving forward?
@monikaherath7505
@monikaherath7505 2 жыл бұрын
@@EllaMcKendrick Oh you certainly deserve to earn money from these videos and trips etc. they're beautifully filmed and the stories are beautifully told, they are far more interesting than some of the bigger travel youtubers I've watched! I have to admit sometimes I see these big travels videos and feel a tad jealous because that's literally my dream life; being able to travel and then being paid for it, even if I'm seen as a "marketer" for the place or hotel. The only problem is I am not photogenic haha. I've recently been watching a lot of videos on digital nomadism and again, I might be glamorizing it a bit but from the videos I've watched, it seems like my dream situation. While I don't think I'd ever break the travel-vlogging market, I do think finding a job I can' work at from anywhere and using that to fund travel would be my best situation. Im currently an accountant for a small business in Sri. Lanka haha so it's secure but not very well paid. The variety of work you can do through the internet is becoming huge and I'm very willing to learn and try to freelance. But these are just castles in the air at the moment. For now I just like watching travel videos in my free time and living vicariously through the youtuber, it makes me feel like I'm doing the travel as well =)
@EllaMcKendrick
@EllaMcKendrick 2 жыл бұрын
That's very kind of you to say! Compliments like that really inspire me to keep going. Growing on KZfaq isn't easy, especially when there are so many huge, established accounts to compete with, which makes me question myself. I'm just really glad you found my channel! I wouldn't worry about being photogenic or not, if being in the front of the camera is what you want to do. Vlogging is about personality. There are tonnes of great KZfaqrs who aren't particularly photogenic but yet they have millions of subscribers. I truly believe the key to succeeding on this platform is to have passion and persistence. Of course, creating a KZfaq channel isn't the only way to earn money whilst travelling, if it's not something you are into. As long as whatever line of work you go into allows remote working (like freelancing, as you mentioned), then it is possible to work whilst travelling. I have had to work on the road before and there are some drawbacks to it (although they are likely small compared to the travel opportunities!). Internet access can be sporadic which means it can be a struggle to get work done at times. And when I'm in such a nice place I really hate to work as I feel like I should be exploring instead! The perfect situation for me personally is to have time travelling whilst really throwing myself into the experience and then complete most of my work when I get home. Then I repeat the cycle. But that's just me! There are plenty of people who I'm sure love being on the road constantly and completing work whilst there. I wish you the best of luck with your future. The great thing about freelance work or social media work is that you can set it up on the side whilst still at your usual job, to allow for some security whilst you test out what new area of work will work for you :)
