We all knew it was coming... Honda has replaced the long running J-Series V6 in the 10th generation Accord with a unique version of the wonderful 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder from the Civic Type R. We just have one question, is it quicker than the V6 in straight line acceleration? Watch the video and find out!

A L don’t forget this Honda service bulletin that affected all Accords and Civics with manual transmissions from 2003-2008 “Transmission Grinds When Shifting Into 3rd Gear, Pops Out of 3rd Gear, or is Hard to Shift Into 3rd Gear”. But yes, their manuals are generally more reliable than their automatics. Of course now you have their 1.5L turbos mixing gas and oil.

I bought a 2017 Accord V6 a week after the debut of the 2018 Accord 2.0T. I got it mainly because I wanted to have one of the last V6 engines in an Accord and because I liked the styling slightly more. However, I have noticed that when Honda does their mid-cycle refreshes, the models look significantly better than the first half of the generation. Come late 2020 when this model is refreshed, Honda will probably make up for the many grips people have with the car. But I always say, you gotta drive the car first before you can make a general statement. I had a 2011 Accord for the longest time and thought it was so ugly because of reflectors on the trunk and the styling, but over the course of having the car, when it was time to sell it, I actually really liked the styling. I think styling grows on people with time. It will work with this model too.

I'm not sure when the will do an Accord refresh, but from what I'm hearing will be after 2020 sometime. And not sure what they will refresh, but will be little things here and there, but don't see anything major. They may offer a spoiler on the touring model, maybe heated rear seats on the EX models, different wheel designs, etc. I owned a previous generation accord and now a new one and they are vastly different. I absolutely love the new one. I get so excited when I just get ready to drive it. I have a Sport 2.0T model with the 10 speed. I will be doing some stereo work to it shortly, but that is really it. It is my daily driver. All accords are great cars, no matter what year.

Honda engineers promised way back in the Spring at the Civic Type R press events that the 2.0T Accord's performance would exceed the old V-6, so I'm not sure why anyone is surprised. Same way the new 3.5TT Raptor absolutely trounces the old 6.2L V-8 Raptor in performance. I think this will probably pull away from the new Camry XSE fairly easily as well. The Camry's 8-speed transmission is ridiculously slow to shift (I know, I've driven one) and geared solely towards fuel economy rather than performance. This new 10-speed in the Accord is probably a much better transmission which more than makes up for the lack of power compared to the Camry. Same way the new Audi A4 is only pushing about 250 HP with a turbo-4 but does 0-60 in 5.1 seconds.

NO TURBOS to deal with in the long haul and other gizmos to fail. It sounds better. No fake exhaust being pumped into the cabin. Its a win win. Plus it looks better than the 2018 HANDS DOWN! Id kick that turtlemobile to the trash bin. Its simply ugly AF! As far as sensors go. That was a dumb thing on part of honda to put that sensor in the middle down there. The hell is your license plate gonna go?? Over the sensor??? Honda needs to scrap it and do a total makeover. The spirior looks way better. Thats the body they should have used. That new design looks so good, it has a wow factor specially because of the front. Not too sure about the tail lights just yet. But my only gripe is the 4 cyl sound just does not compare to the nice deep grunt from the V6 and that will never change regardless of which one is faster.

I have driven a V6 Camry & Accord, but I own a 2.0T Fusion. For me, the bottom line is the Fusion was the best bang for my buck as no one else was going to sell me 240hp with NAV for $22,500 + TTL in 2016. Fusion mpg however is below EPA, but for the money I saved over a Camcord I have plenty left to buy lotsa gas!

J35 engine isn't a torque monster and actually feels a little sluggish off the line with the auto. The old gen Camry V6 engine had better low end torque (not sure how the new one is). I'm pretty sure the 2.0t is tuned to provide enhanced low end torque response than the Type R does, and even the Type R isn't too bad in this regard.

Thanks for the review. One point I want to note, the front license plate holder does not interfere with the radar. Honda actually has a note that warns only to use the one that comes with it. Like a lot of other people I was upset when I heard Honda was doing away with the V6. I wanted all of the technology but in the V6 I've come to love. The dealer I've bought my last several cars from called me and asked me to drive it for a week before giving up on it. After few days it was obvious the 2.0 was quicker, it just didn't have the kick in the back the V6 had. What really convinced me to really consider buying it was how smoothly the 10 speed transmission accelerated. After about three days I drove it in sport mode and quickly forgot about the V6. I've had the 2.0T Touring for a couple of weeks so far and I don't have any regrets.

Okay, confession time: I have owned the beloved Honda V6 engine in both Honda and Acura vehicles since 2002. When I heard they were killing the V6 for the '18 year model, I wasn't happy. I love that V6 smoothness and don't believe a turbo 4 could ever match that. After watching this video and seeing the new car smoke the V6, I'm suddenly having second thoughts. I will still lament the loss of that great V6 engine but I will at least give the new engine a chance. As someone who hates drastic changes, I've lived long enough to know that sometimes change isn't just necessary but occasionally good. This might be one of those times when I'll have to eat my old words when I proclaimed that I would never buy another 4 cylinder car. I admit it......I'm impressed.

@@theredline So 3 years later, I just sold my '16 TLX V6 Advance and purchased a '20 Accord Touring 2.0T. I've only had my Accord for 2 weeks and man am I impressed! Honda has outdone themselves. This car is amazing! The engine is a gem. It pulls hard and puts the power down. So far, I have no regrets. The sound system isn't as good as the one in my Acura and the road noise isn't quite as hushed but those minor quibbles aside, this car is fantastic. What impresses me the most is that the car is so much fun to drive, has so many good features and just oozes quality for such a tremendous value. The Accord 2.0T is one hot ride!

Change isn't always initially welcomed, but is greatly appreciated (especially since all of the Accord's competitors are starting to get complete redesigns/extensive refreshes). I can't wait to get my hands on the new Accord! This new 2.0T should bring pretty competitive mpg ratings, and class competitive performance. Furthermore, the updated exterior and interior designs/layouts both make the Accord an even more attractive entry in its class. Yes. It is sad that they dropped the Coupe version (and the V6 option), but I know almost everyone agrees that Honda should consider producing an Accord Wagon (based on the new generation Accord). As always, from one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work! 👍🏽

Better is relative though, some people don't necessarily buy the last V6 model because they "think" it has more power, they buy it because it looks better. If you have to look at it every single day for at least the next 5 years, which most people will have their car for, then design is definitely a very strong point for purchasing a vehicle. I for one, bought the '16 Honda Accord, because I absolutely hate, and yes I repeat HATE the tablet stick on screen design on the dashboard and the new exterior overhaul they did. I am overly happy with my 2016, I don't give a rats ass that the 2 liter turbo pulls ahead a car length faster on an amateur drag race. If I wanted real power I'll add a supercharger to the V6 and piss all over that 2 liter turbo. And still pay less than a new Accord compared to what I paid for my barely used "new" car + supercharger install and professional mapping. It's all about personal taste. Looking at the new Honda Accord design, I gotta be honest, in 5 years, when I'll shop for a new car, the Hyundai Sonata might be my next victim. Have you seen that new design they are releasing this year? That just makes me moist.

The I4 would have been fine if I never drove the V6. Honda is making a HUGE MISTAKE. You spoke of acceleration. I don't care about fractions of a second, but, do care about smooth driveability and reduced complexity. I understand there are issues with blowby contaminating oil on I4. I will be looking to Toyota for my next V6. Thanks Honda.

Dang that 2.0T is fast! And the old V6 was not slow either.

Funny how 2 years ago I hated the new accord design. Now I actually got a 2020 accord sport 2.0T and I love it

The new accord looks (especially from the rear) like it competes with the Avalon or Azera now instead f Camry / sonata

Naturally aspirated engines will always outlast turbo charged engines. This was a fat loss in Honda’s usually on the point legacy

Erik S Honda hasn’t changed the 3.5 in 10 years they could of easily upgraded it to over 300hp na and make it a 3.7 or 3.8 liter it’s too bad but it’s a tried true and proven engine which is why I went v6. Gonna turbo it eventually. The coupe barely is faster it’s advantage is weighing 150-200 lbs less that’s it.

This is a very good review. I recently bought a 17' Accord Coupe, V6 Manny. Gas Mileage is good but not great. I can see how the new Accord would handle better with less weight up front. HOWEVER, I live in a snow environment and I rely on that weight over the wheels to help get me through the roads. At first I was very critical of Honda's decision to eliminate the V6. I think that within a few years, the HP will go up on the 2.0 along with the torque. PULEEZE keep the manual tranny!!

I had to drive the 2018 for several days before I was willing to part with my '13 V6. Like a lot of other people I was more in love with idea of a V6 and was overlooking what the 2.0T can do. I've had it for 2 weeks and so far no regrets.
