Some keyboard worriers say Bruce Lee can't fight because there is no video to prove it. Well, check out the proof offered by Jim Kelly, a well respected martial artist. Remember there was only point-fighting champions like Chuck Norris at that time. Bruce was the father of MMA who was the first to introduce the full contact in a fight! “One of the most decorated world karate champions”? LOL. Kelly was a last minute replacement in ENTER who was hired because several of the Hollywood crowd trained at his studio, plus he had a film credit. Kelly won the middleweight division at Ed Parker’s tournament and some lesser events in 1971, but he didn’t win the Grand Championship there. Nor was Parker’s “Internationals” EVER a legitimate world championship. It was one of numerous nationally rated events on the national tournament circuit. In Sport Karate in America, there was no legitimate world circuit like there is today such as WAKO, NASKA and the NBL. It was a national circuit, like golf or tennis, and the division winners would compete for the Grand Championship. The winner of the most Grands at the national events that year would be crowned the “National Champion.” Between the different weight classes and roughly dozen (varies depending on the year) national tour events that year, there were at least 36 guys in that achieved as much or more than Kelly did in 1971 alone. There were at least lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight divisional winners, plus the Grand Champions from each of the national tour championships. Guys like Norris and Lewis achieved the actual national title, Kelly wasn’t even close. Even I have won a Grand Championship at a national tour championship back when I was eighteen before fully switching to Kickboxing and later Submission Grappling/BJJ. I was barely a blip on the Sport Karate radar and I was more successful than Kelly, but never was an actor. In another part of this same interview, available on the Golden Bell Training Channel, Kelly admitted that he never met Lee until years later when they began filming ETD. So how did Kelly see Lee spar guys like Stone, Lewis and Norris? Use a Time Machine? Funny, according to everyone who was actually there, Lee only did prearranged drills with those guys and never sparred with them and that was confirmed by Dan Inosanto.

@@DavidHughesKJN don't matter no how...they all trained with sports in mind Bruce trained combat arts. I would pay far more caution facing Bruce than Kelly, dillman, Norris, or lewis. Lewis and dillman (pre BS) get more of my respect bc they both served so at least they knew what a real fight is. Point 'full 'contact,' MMA.... still ain't true no holds everything or nothing.

@@ddfftvjngj4565 This is one of the dumbest and most ignorant comments yet. Give yourself a pat on the back. Given your company of idiotic statements, that’s really saying something. Comments like this completely destroyed any credibility that you might have had with anyone with any real knowledge or experience whatsoever about this subject. “Bruce trained combat arts”. LOL! This type of idiotic statement is made by the idiots that don’t know how to fight who want to fantasize that they can use techniques aimed at vital targets and stop a better fighter with them. Something that they don’t practice in live training against fully resisting opponents and they would never gain the superior position to utilize and all of a sudden, a combat sport athlete is going to be helpless against them. Nice fantasy. Even Tier One and Tier Two Special Forces Operators will tell you that’s complete nonsense. Military Combatives can be a nice supplement, but those methods are very low percentage. In the realm of one out of one hundred. For example, Jocko Willink, Commander of Naval Special Warfare SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser has said that “If you want to learn how to fight, learn Jiu-Jitsu, then supplement that with Muay Thai, Boxing and Wrestling. Then go into bladed weapons and then as additional supplement the old school military combatives can be useful.” But he has said on his podcast that by themselves, they are a one in one hundred odds of beating a trained combat sport athlete in single, unarmed combat. Besides being a combat sports athlete, I was a bouncer and later a bodyguard for several years. For the past two decades, I have moonlighted as a licensed tactical trainer teaching both Tom Patire’s CDT/LRT systems and Frank Cucci’s LINXX system, which was the standard CQC system for Naval Special Warfare Operations (DevGru and SEALs) for many years. Those guys have training towards CQC, but it’s never focused on single, unarmed combat. If you’re even dealing with any CQC, you have already messed up beyond measure. This is never a major focus of even Special Forces Operators, let alone grunts or especially support personnel. So, your military comments about “they both served so at least they knew what a real fight is”, makes you sound about as credible as Frank Dux. Besides, what “combat arts” do you think Lee trained? Was that the Wing Chun, the Judo class he took with Fred Sato when he was going to school in Washington, the little bit of boxing he learned from Brother Edward at his private Catholic High School or the fencing that his older brother did? Oh, I almost forgot, Lee learned the Taekwondo side kick from Jhoon Rhee as well. Which of those, that he at least dabbled in, do you consider such a fearsome and effective combat art? His main training came from learning roughly half of the Wing Chun curriculum before moving to the USA. Outside of movies, does anyone consider that an effective “combat art”? Most consider it on the same level as Aikido regarding combat effectiveness.

It's always eye opening to see how fragile and jealous men are of a dead man's accomplishments..till this day there are countless bums downplaying what Bruce was. A master striker Master philosopher, master athlete, the godfather of MMA. Legend
@assoverteakettle
@assoverteakettle Жыл бұрын
Sorry he was not the godfather of MMA. The term "MMA" was not coinef until the 1990's by Rick Blume. Bruce Lee popularized the idea of hybrid or eclectic martial arts but he was far from being the only innovator. He is the most known due to his fame and celebrity. Just a few examples. Nippon Kempo was developed in the 1930's combining striking, throws and grappling. Ed Parker's Kempo combined many traditional Chinese and American Hawaiian street fighting concepts. A bunch of guys in Brazil called the Gracies, and Luiz Franca learned modified kodokan judo from Japanese judoka immigrants and modified it for the rough streets. Martial Arts has a rich history of people constantly innovating and evolving things. It said that the Shaolin monks took the basic exercises taught to them by Bodhidharma and added more movements to eventually develop Chuan fa. So with all due respect, to say Bruce Lee was the godfather of MMA is emotional hyperbole. Moreover it is incorrect and disrespectful to those who really developed what we now call MMA. No offence but many of you guys posting comments. Do you guys actually do martial arts? Do you guys read about the history of all the martial arts styles? MMA has many roots but it directly has lineage from vale Tudo and shooto.
@user-mw4qi1kx3o
@user-mw4qi1kx3o Жыл бұрын
@@assoverteakettle Bruce Lee was definitely a pioneer of MMA. He was the most polarizing advocate of breaking away from the formalism of traditional martial arts in favor of an approach based around philosophy of practicality and naturalism. No one is discrediting anyone from other fields who started to merge the styles, but what did they do to make their arts mainstream and popular to the world in their time? Bruce is more influential than anyone else at this time with merging of the styles. That's what his Jeet Kun Do style is. they say a mark of genius is the person that can take a complex subject and explain it in simple way so everyone can understand it, and this is what Bruce did for his time. A prominent Godfather of MMA

Bruce Lee was only an actor with zero real fight wins, fictional Kung Fu movies and demonstrations is not real fights. Indeed, I have that feeling quite often. There is something intangibley different about Bruce. I always think of stories of David in the Bible and other's like Daniel and Joseph. Men who God favored, as is his God given right, and something like that speaks to me. Maybe God just really loved the dude and sent him with a message, and I whole lot of extra stuff to boot : )

The hardest thing is describing it to people who had no clue how fast & strong he was! Busting aluminum cans open with his fingers (those one finger push ups!)! The inch punch etc! Quickest leg kicks! List goes on! Imagine film industry telling him to slow down!!! Because he was too fast for the cameras of that era!

You know- when someone says “we really don’t know how great” someone was…we need to acknowledge it. We really truly DONT know how great BL was. Films and movies are different, but if a man who saw greatness in the flesh experience greatness in the flesh…it’s hard to know unless you literally witness it. Ive personally witnessed Michael Phelps swim up close in person numerous occasions and even saw him lose a race or two and he STILL was that dude…he was DIFFERENT, but if all you saw was the glamour of the olympics on NBC it’s easy to dismiss, until you witness once in a lifetime greatness in the flesh.

Man. I wish Jim was still around. I was so hoping to meet him. He just seems like the real deal. Plus, he incorporated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in to his personal training/teaching for the style he was developing. I am a Kung Fu nut....thanks to the movies....but as I got older, I saw Jiu-Jitsu as very valuable as well. That is why I respect Kelly so much more. He knew he had to adapt, and wasn't overcome with the sentiment that "oh real martial artists don't worry about the ground because you'd have to get me there first" type arrogance. He, himself, has claimed his acting chops were not always up to snuff, but I seriously think, over time, he could have definitely been a bonafide action star. Now, I know there were other factors that came in the way in regards to his career as an actor. But again....that would have come in time. Plus, people wanted to see more of him kicking some major a$$, hahaha! Rest In Peace, Mr. Kelly. Know that you continue to be an inspiration to many kids, no matter where they come from. Not a bad legacy if you think about it. Osu!

Certainly as someone born in 1963 Bruce Lee was THE influence on me becoming a martial artist and a fitness fanatic all my life. But he also taught me about respect for others and the art in fighting. Because if its just about the fighting we are switching back into animal instinct, like you see a lot of in modrrn MMA If it comes to a fight I change character completely and its about being prepared to go to the death. Not a characteristic which sits easy in a civilised society and thats why I still revere Bruce Lee because he is also a lot about the mind control and gentlemanly conduct as well as the speed, technique and sheer athleticism. In his time he didnt need to be an MMA great, he made his living through acting. Maybe if he had been born into todays world he would have been an MMA champion instead to make his name rather than Kung Fu movies.

He would get beat by a lightning fast prime Pacquiao or Mayweather in boxing. Many Tae Kwon Do blackbelts have way more advanced and fast kicking. Many martial artist can match his skill; punching kicking, mma jui jitsu grappling. But Bruce Lee was a star, no doubt. The myth is just exaggerated like he was some kind of supernatural superhero that could beat anybody. Totally unrealistic. Todays worldchampions would beat him. Boxing, Mma, Kick boxing etc. Its o.k. he is still an icon.
@firstbornjordan

@@MrStaano Well said. I was somewhat of an icon in my school (and beyond) because no one could get anywhere near my speed - ever (for decades). I jumped in and out of MA systems because I was a handful for people and so I preferred to learn by stealth, for a limited time. I was recommended to exploit my speed for money, but I wanted neither the money, the fame, or the recognition. Lee had a presence, and he is an icon. He also said, quote: ""I'm not fast. I just learned to be deceptive."

@@firstbornjordan People have this superhero fantasy of Bruce lee in their minds. Totally unrealistic views. Bruce Lee couldnt beat any fighter that ever lived. @@MrStaano Just because you say that and you think that don't make it true, but whatever makes you feel good. I personally believe that Bruce would still be dominant even today because of how his mindset was when it came to fighting, and he would have just grown more wiser and more dangerous. And to even mention Pacquiao and Mayweather is very ignorant of Bruce Lee's capabilities. He would literally kill these men, are you serious with this statement?? The fact that you are still talking about him today shows that he wasn't just some fake fighter. It's not about being some superhero it's about his dedication to the art of fighting not to mention being the real deal and way ahead of his time. It's funny how only the most dangerous martial artists pay homage to him but guys who just fight a little try to downplay him, which is really just hate
@MrStaano

@@jameelhambrick9041 How can you say Bruce Lee would kill 2 of the best boxers ever? Professional multi division world champions. Boxing is one of the most effective sets of techniques in real fighting. You are so unrealistic. I'm also a fan of Bruce Lee like most people. But i'm too educated to fall for the superhero fantasy, like Bruce could kick everybody ass regardless of expertise, size and weight. Thats so delusional. I'm guessing you never trained that much. Real fighters know a 140 pound martial artist cannot defeat everybody that ever lived. Bruce lee is still a legend and example. Whoa. I think a *whole* lot of you are missing why he keeps emphasizing hands *or* hands and feet. For a dude at 5'7" to be willing to take on anybody including heavyweights, feet are a necessity. It is *literally* not done any other way, when reach, height, and weight advantage add so much leverage to a pure boxing fight, and sweeps, flying kicks, or takedowns are unavailable to the smaller, more agile fighter. For Lee to go "hands only" with trained heavyweights in open sparring *and* beat them, truly means he was probably as legendary as his reputation purports.

Bullshit! There are 2 techniques,only one of which I will mention…that if you learn them diligently you will be unbeatable! Keiko Uchi Waza! ( Chicken beak ) if learned well will break an opponents collarbones, cheekbones, spine, arms and rip biceps apart! It is taught to attack the eyes! But a precisely delivered downward chicken beak strike to the collarbone will break it! A strike to the heart or solar plexus will kill a person! A strike to the back or top of the hand will disable your opponent instantly!

We have modern weapons now. Things have changed. Martial arts is for hobbyists these days. Now men have no code. They are barely human anymore.
