Bruce Lee VS Pro Fighters: "He could beat us all, We had no chance"
James DeMile, one of Bruce Lee's original students, talks about how they fought and trained. Did he ever try and knock Bruce Lee out? Was Bruce Lee the finest street fighter he ever met? And much more.
In 1959, James W. DeMile began his martial arts career in Seattle, Washington, under the direction of the legendary Bruce Lee. As one of Bruce's first generation students, Mr.DeMile had the opportunity of assisting Bruce in developing his unique fighting skills. It was also DeMile's privilege to appear in Bruce's only book, "The Philosophical Art of Self Defense". DeMile was an undefeated heavyweight boxer in the Air Force as well as "Masters Level" hand to hand combat instructor for the (Special Forces Combative's) program at Fort Lewis in 1985 and 1986.
One of the foremost authorities on modern Wing Chun, DeMile has adapted Bruce's modification of the ancient art of Wing Chun and created WING CHUN DO, a practical self defense system for the 1990's student. DeMile is listed in Bob Wall's Who's Who in the Martial Arts, The Genealogy of the Ving Tsun (Wing Chun) Family by the Ving Tsun Athletic Association, The Original Martial Arts Encyclopedia by John Corcoran and Emil Farkas, Bruce Lee's Fighting Spirit by Bruce Thomas. He has also written many articles for national and international magazines. He has appeared in the movies, Weapons of Death and The Curse of the Dragon and twice on the national TV program Entertainment Tonight. He has written four best selling martial arts books as well as produced a number of training videos, including "Bruce Lee's one and Three Inch Floating Punch", one of the most devastating strikes in the martial arts. He has designed and built a number of specialized electronic training devices as well as some versatile spring loaded wooden dummies. DeMile travels extensively throughout the world teaching his dynamic self defense concepts and techniques to students, police and the military. He specializes in accelerated self defense programs for individuals 40 years old or older. His most famous student for learning the incredible One and Three Inch Floating Punch is 80 year old Professor Wally Jay, creator of Small Circle Jujitsu. DeMile is still an active Deputy Sheriff with the Ottawa County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department until 2005.

@@2masterdingdong lol that's cute, you have nice little newspaper clippings. He was well known within the martial arts, community way before he got into acting (in the US) which was by chance through a demonstration at Ed Parkers tournament in the early 60s. He even said in the 1972 Berton interview he never knew all his martial arts training would lead to acting in HK or Hollywood. Also why would karate champions travel to train with him if he was simply a movie actor? At the the end of the day I'll still listen to the people who actually knew him firsthand. And you are entitled to ignore their accounts of Bruce. That's your parogative.

Zeek Banistor if you are going to assess someone’s fighting career on what is written in a book, then there has never been a fight in high school because they aren’t published either. Don’t expect to find everything documented in someone’s life. Especially if it’s about times they would not have been proud for others to recognize. Reading what others wrote about someone is not the golden key to unlock their entire life and everything they did. That’s hubris. Since this guy actually lived around and interacted with Bruce, his insight into him far outweighs what you read in a book.

Your daddy Trump isn't innocent in this. Biden didn't magically give an actual 84 billion to anyone. All of the U.S. military owned gear that stayed behind was intentionally destroyed or sabotaged.... what DIDN'T get destroyed was all the gear the low morale AFGHAN forces abandoned. there was that he was so successful in the movies. Its cause he had supreme martial arts skill. If you going to make a successful martial arts movie you are not going to get guys that cant fight. Not sure if your quotes are accurate, but I think the issue people have is that legend of Bruce Lee is almost certainly far greater than his actual ability. Bruce Lee was an innovator and a savant and an artist and an amazing athlete. However, we really don't know how he'd stack up in a fight against the best today. All there was when he was on the scene was boxing, at least from a true professional standpoint. There was kick boxing and muay thai and other martial arts in pockets, but the best fighters and athletes were boxing. There weren't many people trained in any martial arts. Fast forward to today, with MMA, its a different story. I mean, Chuck Norris's quote is laughable. The odds that Chuck Norris would be competitive in todays MMA world is ridiculous. There is no basis to believe that. That is just the bluster of an old guy about kids these days, when in fact, in almost every instance, athletes today are superior in training and performance and the numbers of people competing in all of these sports is magnitudes greater than were competing in the 60's and 70's. Finally, there is a theoretical maximum that someone who is 5'8" 140lbs can hit. Even if Bruce Lee was at that theoretical limit, he would not be able to compete with people too much larger than himself. Especially, when the height difference became too great. So, Bruce Lee was great and deserving of being a legend, but, just like the legends of 600ft homeruns and guys that could jump 60" in the past, the magnitude of the legend is greater than the truth of the act.

Yes, there will never be but as good as he was, he knew his limitations in regards to his fighting ability. He was very fortunate to have found and trained in Wing Chun, a style that utilizes scientific geometry to the fullest. It's unfortunate that his ADD restricted him to only learning about 20% of WC while in China. The fact is, because of Politics, he could never learn the rest of the style through his Master Ip Man. Luckily, although Ip had hundreds of students, he also had 5 disciples, and only these know the entire system. Bruce knew two. One was his senior teacher, WSL.. and the other was his childhood friend Duncan Leung. Both are disciples and whenever Bruce needed to know more he would discreetly contact one or the other. It went without saying that Bruce knew better than screw with either one. Sadly, Wong Shun Leung [WSL] died a few years ago but he was working with Bruce on his last movie Game of Death, and in the original script, WSL was on the top floor of the pagoda, and at the end he killed Bruce. That would have been the 1st and ONLY movie that showed TRUE Wing Chun fighting style and this was something Bruce was excited about. WSL can be seen in many of the still pics of the movie set. Gary Lam represents WSL today. Duncans lineage, which is smallish and very secretive, has four differing sets of kicking jongs as well as a reactive knife jong, and may be represented by his son Darren. Both can be seen on YT.

@@philip6419 oh, I thought Bruce Lee learned Wing Chun from Ip Man in Hong Kong. I also thought, that Bruce Lee didn't find Wing Chun to be effective enough which is why he developed Jeet Kune Do. If Wing Chun is so effective, why is it that every video that I see of MMA vs Wing Chun ends up in a MMA guy victory? Bruce Lee certainly found some of Wing Chun effective but not the entire system. Bruce Lee sought to abolish the concept of one being a slave to a particular style. My advice is to expand your horizons my friend, and do not be locked into a restrictive system. Me for instance, I like taekwondo kicks, Western boxing as well as taekwondo hand strikes, Muay Thai knees and elbows, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappling. If I considered myself to be just a Taekwondo adept, I would be greatly limiting my potential.

You parrot the same tired MMA drivel I hear from other thoughtless morons. First, because WC is in such demand, sadly the money produces lame wanabe 'Masters' who produce lame students who claim THEY are masters. Second, unlike the Wing Chun and the street, MMA has rules. Most WC techniques are on 'soft' tissue BANNED from contact by MMA rules. According to Master Yeshua, Samurai fighters suck because it seems there are no winning Samuri's in MMA. You spew a theory, sound on paper but Tyson has a quote, "EVERYONE has a plan.. until they're hit." Your reading skills suck as well. I wrote Bruce Lee's Wing Chun knowledge ONLY contained the first form, and a couple drills, yet, just that much made him famous. @Juno Donat How did you confuse "Bruce Lee was not a fighter" for "Bruce Lee couldn't fight" ? Hmm ? Because that's what you are saying. That was your interpretation, not Joe Lewis'. Could Lewis not have meant that it was NOT Lee's PROFESSION to take part in tournaments, but that his PROFESSION was acting and teaching? Otherwise, why mention acting ? Acting and teaching were his bread and butter. Ain't nothing wrong with that. But what a 'fighter' means to Joe was one who who professionally takes part in tournaments as a profession, to make a living. It's the fight GAME, with trophies. Like the bodybuilding circuit. Not martial arts. And Lee only wanted to spar with winners, like Joe. So ? Is that wrong ? Of course he was learning from everyone ! That's what made him a creative, adaptive martial artist that he was, and we should all aspire to be ! Bruce was a young man hungry for knowledge. Like no one else, I bet, Joe has ever met.

@@billy_mandalay. Totally agree. This is from that same interview he reference. DW Forum - You have said on numerous occassions that Bruce was not a fighter, but at the same time you say that Bruce was the first Ph.D in martial arts fighting? And you have also written about how when you first met Bruce you were really prejudice in those days, especially of little guys as fighters, what changed your mind? You also write that in those days you didn't care much for talkers, you say, "don't tell me how to fight if you never fought", you go on to say "I was a doer in those days, and I didn't care much for talkers. In other words, don't tell me how great you are, how great your style is, or weather your stuff works or not. Let's simply get in the ring and I'll find out within a matter of seconds". What was it that changed your mind and become one of Bruce's students? Why were your classes private, and were Chuck Norris, or Mike Stone taught privatly also? Joe Lewis - Bruce told me he did not care about competing. He had no interest in it, and he said he felt there was nothing to gain by him doing so. Little guys, in my opinion, have always been the best trainers. This is because tactically very early in their careers they figure out how to conquer larger opponents. Mike Stone, who I respect, convinced me to study with Bruce. Martial arts does not have a long history as does boxing. Bruce Lee was a wealth of knowledge. No one knew what he had. Bruce Lee was proud to be the instructor of three world champions, Norris, Stone, and myself. With private lessons, he could customize each lesson to fit and compliment the attributes of the individual. I teach this way also.

Exactly! I hear all the time Bruce couldn’t win against an MMA fighter and I’ll tell you why he would dust any MMA fighter. People who really followed Bruce’s style, technique and philosophies on martial arts then they would know Bruce never claimed that his technique is the best, if you do your research you will hear him say many times that the best martial artist is one who can adapt, and that’s exactly what he would do if he was here today. He was a street fighter and would take notice how technique has moved to the ground and adapt and overcome. That’s what he did and that’s why he’s the best martial arts fighter in history..

THIS is the GREATEST truth about Bruce's ability ever. My uncle was there training in San Francisco with Bruce and Tom Bleeker etc, and he stated that he never met a human being that could actually generate the amount force and pressure intermingled with unimaginable speed like a freight train. Unc was muscular but effective like bolo. He said Bruce embarrassed everyone. These people were all serious street fighters. Bruce was the real deal. His size made him seem easily beatable but in actuality the very people that hates on him today would have fell in reality from merely one of his methods. He was lightning ⚡ in a person. @@KungFuNinjaJoe Funny you mention Chuck Norris' opinion. He also said this about his death. At the 1975 San Diego Comic-Con convention, Lee's friend Chuck Norris attributed his death to a reaction to the combination of the muscle-relaxant medication he had been taking since 1968 for a ruptured disc in his back and an "antibiotic" he was given for his headache on the night of his death. Lee was a known taker of pain killers and is believed to have died from heat stroke. He had his sweat glands removed because he didn't like the look of sweat on his shirts. Not exactly the behaviour of a humble mystic. Also, just because he is obsessed does not prove anything about his abilities.

Most people tend to boast in comparison with others, specially when the others have already passed away such as the case of Bruce Lee!! He got to a level where very few masters reached in many martial arts, because of a single detail that makes all the difference, while almost of the martial arts masters developed the physical strength, which is good but not enough, Bruce Lee like the Shaolin Monks developed the combination of physical strength with the inner strength which is given by the CHI and makes all the difference in strength and speed!! Mário de Azevedo I’m alway fascinated with people who say Chuck said this about Bruce, which is not true.I can actually provide video evidence of what he actually said about Bruce when asked. Can you provide any proof of Chuck saying he beat Bruce? There is an interview on KZfaq when asked about Bruce and if he could beat him and Chuck paused and said “ I’m was a professional fighter “ but then he brushed it off and said Bruce is really good and neither of them want to go there with each other. In other words they never competed with each other or felt the need to. He says they worked out together a few times. Do you have proof of all of the people who were saying things about Bruce? Even if these fighters believe that they could beat him they would never see it because it’s a bad PR move. If you want to get along and go along there is a social pressure to say nothing but good things about Bruce. Also it’s a sign of respect. When Donnie Yen was asked about Bruce Lee and if he can beat him he says that Bruce was his elder and he respected him which is also an interview on KZfaq. He never say that he couldn’t bear Bruce. That was a smart political answer. You are right Bruce has reached a level that most won’t and he was way ahead of his time as far as his ideologies of training and fighting. I can never put Bruce Lee as top fighter because he didn’t fight. It’s easy to talk about what he can do to someone but eventually everyone gets hits and Bruce’s his chin is an unknown variable. He may have a glass jaw for all we know. People blindly believe things without thinking about all of the variables.

Bruce Lee may have had some street fights and challenge matches but he doesn't have a professional fight record with a list of opponents whose skill we can evaluate. There's no video of him in a real fight just training, demonstrations, sparring and acting. In the sparring video you can't even tell which one is Bruce Lee because they are wearing headgear. Testimonials from friends like James Demile can give us some idea of his fighting prowess but people can exaggerate especially when they have an agenda.

Street fights actually do have rules, it's just that there is often no one there to enforce them until after that fact. For example, there are laws governing self defense, including how much force you are justified in using. And sometimes there are unspoken rules, like the laws of playground when you were a kid. Regardless, street fights are a horrible thing to train for, and a horrible thing to judge someone's abilities on. They are super vague and undefined. They can encompass anything from a literal school yard brawl to an armed criminal assault. They are usually against the untrained (in martial arts), and yet are super unpredictable and can be won based on a lot of factors besides skill.

Bruce lee figured out how to get enormous speed with *techniques* he was not superhuman but 99.9% of people today are too stupid to realise that. Plus he was only about 130 pounds. Jkd was developed to end a fight in seconds. Even masters of martial arts will never be able to defeat bruce. Why? Bruce knows how to end a fight quickly by targeting the body's weaknesses. "I fear not the man who has practiced 1000 kicks one time, i fear the man who has practiced 1 kick 1000 times" or somethin like dat. Bruce practiced jkd everyday for years. Each move he easily could have done ove 2000 times. Tell me how do u beat someone that crazy in a street fight? Obviously he wouldnt have gotten popular if he wasnt this good. So if he was fake how did he create jkd? And what about his original students? It takes enormous amounts of stupidity to say he is fake or ufc fighters today can beat him. With all that training i can bet that he can take out a lion with dual nunchuks. Have ever seen his side kick? HE FUCKING LEAPS SO FAR xD. That amount of moment will definitely do some damage to a lion. Am just saying he might, but idk i cant change ur beliefs.

People talk down on Bruce like he was just an actor but don't want to acknowledge him as a true master of martial arts because they're being biased. I'm polynesian and were like one of the strongest people on this planet but growing up a huge fan of Bruce Lee's movie's and his martial arts abilities. I can tell u right now that in my honest opinion. He was way before his time even in today's standards its 2021 Bruce Lee was still ahead of the game. No one to this day with his weight class is stronger or faster than him. I'm not talking about a race or bench press, just in speed and strength alone in natural ability of what the human body is capable of. He was able maximize every part of his body where he was lethal in every possible way from a physical and speed standpoint and had endurance to add on top of all that. Arnold Schwarzenegger said, it himself that he was amazed at Bruce Lee's body not only for his looks but the strength and agility and speed behind it for a small man.

He certainly was ahead of HIS time, but wouldn't go so far as to say even ahead of NOW. Fighting has evolved a lot. I don't think his takedown defense and ground game is as good as one of the best grapplers today. So speaking of top tier grapplers, I think, he would have very little chance.
@staylowkeyhumble5279
@staylowkeyhumble5279 2 жыл бұрын
@@vconsumer those top tier grapplers would have to take him to the ground first and they would have a tough time doing so because 1 he is too fast and 2 he's too strong and 3 he is as flexible and durable as they get. Think of Floyd Mayweather type of counters but faster and stronger and hits harder. The grappler would get knocked out trying to get bruce to the floor. Sugar ray leanard said Bruce was way faster than him and he was fast af.

Bruce was a rich spoiled child actor who went to private schools. Kids fighting dont mean alot.
@UpRoaryus
@UpRoaryus 6 жыл бұрын
It does when the hong kong police are after you for it. He was a child actor who had been training in martial arts his entire life, not in some twice a week class at the YMCA but in CHINA where that shit is no joke, where training is pretty much BEATEN into you. Understand that most actors doing those kung fu movies, they would slow down the camera to make action look faster, but when they filmed him doing his moves he actually had to slow down his moves because the camera couldn't catch him clearly - at regular speed, all you could see was a blur. Someone with that much speed and training is nobody you want to pick on, spoiled rich kid or not. That kid could kick some ass. . There is a reason the guy is a legend and it isn't because he was an ACTOR. He had a gift and a passion. He CREATED a martial art, FFS, and an effective one at that. THAT means quite a bit more than "kids fighting". Jesus. Read a book. Watch real fighters talk about him beating them easily. THINK before saying something so uninformed.

UpRoaryus...you really need to do some simple research and common sense. Bruce was a famous child actor, he was not a ghetto rat living in the alley. He created Jeet Kune Do because he felt it was lacking after the single known fight that he had, its not really an art since there is no set curriculum. If he had really been fighting with Martial Artists and not kids when he was in HK he would have discovered the issues with Wing Chun years before. Kids fighting other kids means nothing...this was proven by Bruce Lee himself.
@UpRoaryus
@UpRoaryus 6 жыл бұрын
Nowhere did I say he was a ghetto rat, and never denied he was an actor as a child, but my point was that he was wanted by the Hong Kong police , and his neither acting nor his schooling has anything to do with the fact that he also ran with a gang and fought for his LIFE not with just preppy kids on the schoolyard at recess . You think that his being from affluence or an actor prevents him from being a great fighter too? THAT isn't good common sense at all. How about YOU do some simple research? The facts of his life are readily available about the man and they are simple to prove. He couldn't study Wing Chun in the states because there was no TEACHER good enough to learn from here. He had to wait until he could return to China to study under the masters. Jackie Chan has talent and charisma too, famous actor. Not even the same league as Bruce Lee in terms of legend because he is not the same kind of fighter that Lee was. Good stuntman, good actor, and tons of popular movies, but nowhere near the same status as Lee. Jeez. The ignorance displayed by people who don't ever pick up a book is incredible...

You claims of him running in gangs and fighting for his life make him sound like a ghetto rat. There is no evidence that he was wanted by the HK police, he was never in any gang. . You do know he want back there and it was never an issue? You really should do more research, the ignorance of people who cannot do basic research is incredible. ..movies are not real.
