Can Canned Potatoes Actually Be GOOD....?

The canned spud is a store cupboard staple, and for some a necessity. Generally speaking, fresh produce is always going to be cheaper per kg than it's processed counterpart. But it's not always an option for people on the bread line, and might not have access to the money to buy a bag of potatoes outright. So today I thought i'd explore the canned potato and see if I can make them taste a lot better. At 37p a can, and you only have a few quid to come up with a meal, then they are ideal for that. Plus they don't go off which will help reduce waste. Who knew the humble tinned spud could be so tasty!
I used them in this really simple little lunch recipe. And top with maybe a fried egg or some buttered bread on the side, and it's going to fill you up for not a lot of money. You can also swap out so many of the ingredients, so it's brilliant for having a fridge clearout. Kale, mushrooms, cabbage, sausages, leftover roast chicken, spinach, ham. Anything goes with stuff like this.

To make my Chorizo and tinned potato pan fry you will need:
►1x200g chorizo (Lidl £1.89)
►1x500g can of potatoes (Lidl 37p)
►1 small pepper (any colour is fine)
►1 small red onion (or whatever colour you have)
►About 2 handfuls of frozen peas
►1 tsp of chilli flakes
►Salt & pepper

During the pandemic when most fresh food was scarce I stocked up on these potatoes thinking I probably never use them but I have. I've used them as they are,added to casseroles, added to soups, diced and fried them and they literally worked with everything. The only thing I would recommend is that you drain them and pat dry them first then just go for it very versatile

Tinned new spuds make a nice, no cooking potato salad. I like tinned sardines (Mackerel is nicer but double the price.) in sauce with rice, and a bit of whatever veg I have. When making rice I always make more than I need, then quick chill and freeze what's left. I also chop up and freeze things like peppers, carrots, celery and mushrooms if they're starting to go ropy in the fridge. This means I can make a quick, healthy and filling meal in the microwave when I don't have time to cook.

That pan-fried meal looks very tasty. I always have a couple of cans of potatoes in the cupboard as a fallback, but haven't used them very often because of the texture. But recently I watched a KZfaq video which showed the results of roasting tinned spuds in an air fryer. As I have a Ninja I gave it a go and was literally blown away by the result. It was the best result I've ever had from tinned potatoes. Basically it involved draining the potatoes, patting them dry with kitchen paper, coating them sparingly with oil (I used sunflower) and roasting them for around 10 minutes at 200°C.

Tinned spuds ... absolute necessity for emergency/back up pantry store. Back in the sixties we used to deep fry them in a chip pan. There was a time remember when the shops weren't rammed with sacks, bags and varieties of spuds like they are now.

We can get those here in Australia, too, most supermarkets have them, but the only time I ever bought them, they weren't whole potatoes: they were chopped into little cubes, and they were intended to be used in potato salad. They were of quite good quality, though, and I just mixed them with a bit of mayonnaise, chopped onion, etc., and they actually turned out to be a very good potato salad. I must have a go at your chorizo version, though, mate; it looks extra scrummy! 😋👍🏻

Fantastic meal there. I'm going to give that a go. Tinned spuds are fantastic for bulking out a homemade curry. They absorb so much flavour and really add to making it very filling if rice or naan aren't easily to hand. Tinned mushrooms are an interesting one that I've not dared dabble with yet. I suspect they are rather slimy!
@Adam_Garratt
@Adam_Garratt Жыл бұрын
I don't like mushrooms, but I would say with tinned they would have taken on a lot of water. So if were me I'd gently fry them until most water content has come out of them. I'd imagine that would improve the flavour and texture somewhat

Tinned fish like sardines and mackerel make great pasta sauces. Add to cooked onions and garlic, maybe some chilli powder and capers, tin of tomatoes. Cook out and add to spaghetti. I used to eat warmed up sardines in tomato sauce on toast when I was really skint in my bedsit. You could do a slightly poshed up version by toasting some ciabatta bread, rub with a garlic clove then top with some fresh tomatoes, red onion and then the fish.

I always kept a few tins of baby new potatoes on hand for whenever I couldn't get to the shops, for example, getting back late after some time away. Some brands had more of the taste of the can than others, but they were OK with the tinned Fray Bentos Pie, tinned baby carrots,and UHT milk for a cuppa, all kept for the same reason. As for canning, I used to like the soups, but I think my dislike is as much to do with the changes to the recipes as the process itself. Recipes from the 70's often used soup as one of the liquid ingredients - but then they often used onion sauce mix as well! I am more than happy with tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn, pulses, and beans (of the variety which need soaking and/or long cooking) As for the rest, I would be interested to see if you can get something better than just acceptable. Rather than just concentrating on cans, perhaps a combination with frozen, rather than just peas, especially as there are still £1 offers around. A good way of affording fresh (apart from growing your own) is to buy loose from either the supermarket or a grocer - not only are they cheaper than the pre-packaged ones, you don't pay a premium for smaller quantities, and being loose you can buy as little or as much as you want. I have even been known to buy a single carrot! These days, where we are all watching the pennies and running down our stocks, people should be aware that the most energy consuming part of running a freezer is chilling the air which is replaced every time you open the door. If you can not afford to keep your freezer full, at least fill the empty space as well as you can. I have seen some use scrunched up newspapers or boxes used for mail order deliveries. I know that cans may be more expensive weight for weight, however, we have to factor in that for some, those cans will have come from food banks at little or no cost to themselves. P.S I.believe that you can get mushrooms in a can! P.P.S, it might be worth considering jars and bottles at the same time.

So sad that many youngsters haven't been taught how to cook on a budget...I guess it's a skill from the past we enherited from our grandparents who'd been through post war rationing? Interesting you mention Tesko...I personally think the big five supermarket chains are jumping on the cost of living crisis bandwagon and increasing their prices purely out of greed...My local corner shop is now cheaper on many items such as bread, milk, eggs, bogroll, etc... It's all a disgusting con!

Once and awhile my mom threw those canned potatoes in with a roast. They were always a great change from mashed potatoes!

Dear Adam thank you for great idea. To be honest I'm European from Slovakia and I got English partner so sometimes I'm still had to learn how to cook for him as he used to eat something else not always as he like some of my culture kitchen. I never used to cook from canned potatoes it is something new from me as We used to cook everything from fresh never canned things. But I want to try something different. One thing what I have to tell you is that if that Chorizo sausage is from Europe, you don't have to take ,,paper off from Sausage. It is made from meat and it is there for purpose. So meat is staying in one place. You can eat it. All what you have to do it is just cut into rounds like you did. Anyway thank you for your idea I'm just going to cook the same today for dinner. I'm going to deffo subscribed you. M

I like that meal...something my boys and I will like...and here in Australia our canned potatoes are a lot more than 37p...more like hitting the 3$ mark😏....we also years ago use to be able to buy them canned in a mint sauce...just lovely but that seems to have stopped and now just in water...

Donna I am so sorry! I don't know what to say, other than I wish things could change for the better for you and everyone else. Having a terminal illness is bad enough, but having what precious time you have marred by this shady, lying, grifting set of sh*ts is the cherry on top. Sending you nothing but good and positive vibes Donna. And welcome to the family! We're all a friendly bunch here. 💖

Total agree about the Tesco thing but beware, I eat tinned spuds regularly and I've noticed quite a difference from brand to brand. Love these cooked in the Ninja air fryer with various coatings added e.g. spices & seasonings like Jerk, Tandoori etc. Also nce with chopped up bacon & fried onions.
