Can head gasket sealer fix an engine? Probably not but lets try it! The engine will not be rebuilt since it most likely has previous damage. I don't think this will work but I have always wanted to try it.

Smoke is blue, rich running / unburnt fuel is black ? white is either steam or in cold weather and a running warm engine condensation usually .
@barryphillips7327

White smoke is indication of a lean mixture, blue smoke is oil being burnt, black smoke is over rich mixture. Condensation from the exhaust does not necessarliy mean anything is wrong, one of my cars does this, it has cast iron block alloy head, different metals heat up at different rates.

It can't be easy at those temperatures to discriminate between smoke from incorrect mixture and simple condensation from combustion. (That's likely the source of the water dribbling from the exhaust.) They look very similar, but I expect you can tell by the smell.

It can work. I had a lot of Volkswagen t3, at least 10 had cooling system problems. I always used chemical products like you. As long as the engine is running and not overheating, I prefer this solution. Don‘t forget to check, if there is water in the oil. If it doesn‘t work immediately, don‘t worry. Sometimes, it takes some days, it is a chemical reaction.

Another great video Adam. I’ve tried something similar before to good effect, but I drained the coolant out first before putting the sealant in with fresh water. After the problem was fixed, I drained the cooling system again and put fresh coolant in. I did this about 5 years ago and the car is still in daily use! I suspect it depends on how bad the gasket is as to whether the sealant works or not.

I suggest pressuring your cooling system to cap pressure and firstly keep your eye on it. Then start your engine and if the cooling pressure increases you have a combustion leak into the cooling system. I can't remember if you've also tried a coolant analyser whilst running. I have no experience of them but the first test is pretty good.

What you need to be aware of with those headgsaket fixes are they contain what's known as liquid glass, so some sort of silicate from memory. Bottom line is it can be effective unless you have coolant getting into the oil in which case it all can become a bad idea. Some of the bottles do indicate this so read the fine print.

I trust Barrs permanent head gasket sealer. Thermoswitch went out on my 98 Honda civic hatchback while on the freeway, overheated engine and cracked head gasket. Water got into oil while white smoke was coming out of pipe. Poured half of Barr's container into radiator, step on gas pedal for 15 minutes on 6000 rpms and wham, white smoke stopped. I already put 200 miles on it and is running ok. No smell of coolant but a coppery smell. Barr"s is the best when properly applied. My highest respect for Barr's brand. It saved my day until I get a JDM engine. I had a 79 Jaguar xj6 in mint condition. It requires 1/3 ) less coolant with a whole container of Barr's revved at 6000 rpms. Barr's is the best application for a blown head gasket .

Did you lose any more coolant after putting in the sealer? That is just Water Vapour (product of Combustion)
@TornadoCAN99
@TornadoCAN99 3 жыл бұрын
Unsure if that exhaust "smoke" is just steam condensing in the cold ambient temp? When gasoline burns, water vapour is a combustion product. For headgasket check, you need to do a compression test. If cylinder pressure reaching into coolant passages, you would see oil/black carbon accumulating coolant overflow tank.

A old way to test for misfire, is to hold a piece of paper at the top edge of the exhaust tail pipe, if it pops inwards, its a misfiring cylinder. You can try this by removing a spark plug lead on a known good engine to invoke a misfire on this good engine. As for the "mechanic in a can" He was never a good mechanic in the first place and should be relegated to the rubbish can. Lol. When the engine has cooled down, the will be water in the offending cylinder. Telling you more of what is going wrong. possible cracked liner?, head gasket fault?, cracked head?, or even cracked inlet port?. I would i invest in a cooling system pressure tester and inspect component at a time ( you have an inspection camera to see down plug holes etc ). Dont write off the engine yet.
