Tony (Mr Porsche/BMW fan boy) was always going to hate the Emira. He hasn't even driven it and has already made his mind up. The 2 year waiting list and forums full of Porsche and Lotus owners that are in the queue for one would disagree with all of your points.

Well, there are some concerns about it. If you live in a smaller country, there is nowhere to service the car. Porsche has service / dealer centers literally everywhere. So, it is not a car for the masses.

I have the car in order and im gonna say this what he said (not all) but majority of it true, we see Emira much better car cause we compare it to Evora, I driven Emira, its magnificent car for the road, I know im gonna love it, but I cant say its better than a Cayman or M2, I perosnally owned already a cayman GTS and have GT4RS in order as well, Emira to me is an alternative car to the market than actually going to be the best, Cayman was well known before Emira comes its unbeatable, M2 delivers totally different driving experience while aiming for same market as Cayman hence it can be at the top, Emira however its close to a Cayman type of car so kinda hard to make it best drivers car in the segment, its hard to pick it as a the benchmark and for 2 reasons: 1. Powertrain 2. Gearbox its just outdated, it works, it does its job, it have nice feel, nice sound..... but this segment have cars that exceeds "it works" this and that, with proper powertrain/gearbox combo this car then might actually be giving Cayman hard time, and here comes I4 engine however Cayman already had great I4 with great PDK that didnt deliver the experience of a Flat 6 so how will I expect Emira to beat it? So how will an Emira beat a Cayman? one way only: Looks + Interior cause a Cayman still a 10 year old car in reality that got refreshed, however the engine/gearbox combo in Porsche just miles ahead, and these 2 things for me makes over 50% of the car in this segment, im hoping Lotus does some magic into AMG M139 engine but if not sorry I dont think it can be up there with a Cayman, this V6 became the main downside of the car after solving other issues.

@@TRX25EX Aside from the Porsche GT cars, the lower spec cars (particularly the Boxter/Cayman segment) are aimed at the masses just like the Emira. And subjectively speaking, a think the Emira would win on looks and and exclusivity. The driving dynamics are obviously important but for the masses, a very good (but not amazing) drive, coupled with a stunning exterior is a winning combo.

i agree, lotus’ have carried there value better during normal market conditions than their respective gt4 counterpart. that might be due to production numbers which is a good sign i think. M2’s seem to be for a certain type of person, but I don’t think they should be compared with because the person who would buy an M2 would never touch a Lotus and vice versa, even for the same money. Along with the manual supra however i believe that’s in a different price bracket. This being the last combustion engine lotus too i think they’ve done it perfectly, more heavy sure but it’s still relatively pure and raw. considering some of the new cars were seeing now this is a standout. @@cirrus393 The limited edition and special Porsches go up in value or hold their value, like the GT3 etc; but a regular Cayman, 911 or Boxster, depreciates more than a Lotus. At four years old, Exiges have only lost a few thousand over new, whereas a Cayman will have lost about £10k (I just checked Lotus and Porsche approved used websites to confirm this). At ten years old, a Cayman is in the early £20k range, whereas Evoras of that age are only just dipping under £30k, with most going for more (I just checked Pistonheads to confirm this). exactly. The Emira isn't competing directly against the GT4. The Emira competes with the Cayman GTS 4.0 which IMO is kind of a boring looking car. The emira looks far better and more exotic. The G87 M2 is also very ugly and very heavy, something like 3800+ lbs. Does the M2 really compete with an Emira? The Supra is the best looking BMW sports car and is somewhat lightweight but it's a pretty noticeable step down in price / experience from an Emira Between a Cayman GTS 4.0 and an Emira, I'd rather have the Emira. In america, the Emira is actually slightly cheaper when considering options, looks better and has similar driving dynamics. I'd rather have a GT4 over an Emira, but that's 20 to 40k USD more expensive than an Emira

As the owner of a manual M2 Comp my shortlist for the replacement was Emira, Cayman GTS 4.0 or new M2. After driving an Emira I am tending to the new M2 - although I am a bit worried about the looks. IMO the Lotus looks stunning and the interior is lovely - so much nicer than the Cayman. It is good to drive but for me no better than my M2 Comp so it becomes a choice between the spectacular looks of the Emira versus the practicality and predictability of the M2.

My very reliable 2014 Evora S has: heated seats, Apple CarPlay*, cruise control, arm rests, cup holders*, 'touring' style suspension and lots of alcantara/leather… It’s quiet on the motorway and feels like a premium experience, but open the exhaust valve and it sounds fantastic while being a proper Lotus in the twisties. *granted, these ones retrofitted by me! Would love to see a comparison of a car like mine vs. Emira, I don’t see the point in changing it because it ticks all the same boxes being mentioned about the Emira (once you put CarPlay in!). Anyway, interesting chat as always chaps, and I’m glad to see Lotus finally getting some mainstream recognition.

I drove both Evora GT and Emira, I dont know about other guys but main thing I noticed is refinement overall, the noise control, the ride quality, the seats feel, the steering feel, the seating position and visibility, when adding all together it actually made bigger difference than I expected, the throttle response even seemed more suitable now. to me Emira is no brainer over Evora even though I liked Evora but Emira does seem like an All new Evora than actually an Evora underneath with new looks over it like majority say, gearbox seemed smoother and easier to operate in Emira also, I wont say night and day difference but adding it all it actually does seem totally new car.

@NightfallDrives Жыл бұрын
Nice, I’d love to try a late Evora, I think the GT is the US run-out somewhere between a GT410 sport and a GT430. I think the point here is the Emira is often being compared to the more stripped out & raw later Evoras, but the earlier series 1 Evora is perhaps a more interesting comparison to judge Lotus by because it’s got more sound deadening, a different interior and (with a few minor upgrades) a similar level of kit.

It's obvious that Tony just isn't a Lotus guy, and that's fair enough, but not sure the F Type and M2 are really rivals (even though I like them both). Yes, I've enjoyed all the M cars I've driven and they're all been better than the standard cars in most areas related to driving enjoyment, but I can't say I've ever experienced a step change from a normal 3, 2 or 5 series. What's portrayed on the forums and in many magazines is that the M2 is equivalent to a Cayman or Evora, and a normal 2 series is equivalent to a Focus or Civic, which I find totally bizarre. From the seat of my pants at least, a 2 series drives quite a bit better than most other cars of that size (it's got a totally different layout, for starters), an M2 is a bit better than that with better suspension setup, diff etc; and a Cayman or Evora is a sports car with a whole different focus. This to me seems totally logical from an engineering point of view. Don't dare ever say that on a forum though! 😀

To be fair Lotus as a company for after sales has always been shocking. His opinion is irrelevant on this new model until he’s driven it. As a Lotus purist as you call it… I see this as a Lotus for sharing… I.E. I tease my wife it’s her next car.

If I was in the market for a car like an Emira or any of its rivals. It’s one of the 2-3 cars I would consider and look at. It’s hard to ignore the Cayman in that sector, but I think all the others I would rather have the Lotus just going off what I have heard and seen so far.

M240i xDrive has a tested 0-60 of 3.7 secs, and has a really nice interior. Similar performance to a base 911 for less than half the money. And it's more practical. 0-60 is also similar to a Ferrari FF. Fully loaded for 55k. Moreover, the M240i has one of the best and most tunable engines on the market. A proper in-line six. A base Cayman isn't in the same league and will cost more. And the Cayman's interior is essentially unchanged for 10 years already. Really, as a road car, I'm not sure what's not to like? Certainly, for the money, it is unrivalled.

Maybe they will get some of the Cayman customers that would really like a 911 but can’t afford one. It’s an assumption that many make about Cayman owners and that assumption wouldn’t apply if you buy the Lotus. The looks are a bit more ‘supercar’ than the Cayman and the Emira looks better than the Cayman to my eye. I thought the Evora was tremendous fun to drive. The Mercedes engine is going to give it some serious performance for the money and be very tuneable.

As a Cayman driver the Emira is very attractive - about 400HP - better gearing and great looks. Cayman does have better storage - which in the back does not get hot and in the front (I can do weekly shop for 4 people) - whereas the Emira its behind the seats. The 4 pot Mercedes engine is probably the one that competes with the 718 - the 6 pot is like the Cayman GTS. Long gearing - dumb move by Porsche.

One thing we can't forget about is the fact that upcoming Cayman/Boxter replacement is going to be fully electric and I'd say Porsche will gain some new customers because of that but they're also going to lose some.I'm very happy for Lotus to be coming up with cars that are actually appealing to wider spectrum of customers as I'm nearly sure more hard-core variants will follow up. To use Porsche(my favourite brand) as an example, they always launch more mainstream models before they release more focused ones.

Sam, I know you find Tony's intransigence infuriating....and at times he can be quite blinkered to changing his view. However, as an ex motor dealer myself, I can completely understand where he is coming from. In the world of retailing (successfully), used cars, it is the market which dictates what is, and more importantly - what is NOT cool. Put simply, if the buying public decide it is not desirable, it will sit in stock like the ghost of Christmas past, costing the dealer money in stocking and depreciation. Sometimes the choice of stock may seem samey or lacking in adventure, but Tony knows only too well what will make a fast and profitable turn over for his business, and his view will likely match his contemporaries. Of course, since they are all chasing the 'right' spec/model/colour, this will have the effect of increasing values....there are a finite available number at any one time, being chased by a large number of dealers, hungry for stock. Tony knows that swimming against the tide 'bigging - up' Lotus turning a corner by stocking Emira's would just cost him money. Being an evangelist doesn't pay the overheads with buyers still queuing up for German product. He will need to see a consistent demand over the next two years for Lotus to 'break the mould' and be accepted by buyers as a realistic alternative, along with strong reliability and residuals, before he dips his toe into that market. I for one hope that Lotus manage to pull it off, they have been almost forgotten for too long, but it is far too early yet to tell.

why dont they keep communicative steering of the evora in electric car? prius weighs around as much as evora emira the steering and pedals that push back more, would encourage less over powering and over braking , less friction steering, and itd make it fun way to keep drivers attention on road, and it will probably not use as much power to exist despite possibly a increase in weight

Comparisons with the Cayman and F-type are good, but the Emira remains the best choice, especially for the price. But not this version! The best Emira will be the 2.0 with the AMG engine from the A45S. The value in Europe will be around €100,000 with plenty of equipment. The Cayman S costs €95,000 without options, and the F-Type €89,000 the P300, without equipment. (in my country) best regards and good year!

All cars offer something different. The Cayman has a variable ratio steering rack, whereas Lotus take a linear rack and then tune the geometry to make it as linear as possible; that is just a completely different focus, they're deliberately going in different directions. The assistance on that rack is electric on the Cayman for emissions reasons, whereas Lotus use a hydraulic rack for better feel - again, that's just a different focus. Also on emissions, Porsche have long gearing to keep their CO2 figures down on standard market tests that specify gears for speeds, whereas Lotus choose gears the old fashioned way for what suits the engine and roads. I could go on, but although the Cayman and Emira initially appear to be serving the same market, there are lots of engineering decisions which show that they're different cars aimed at different people. This also applies to the M2, although in a more obvious way, as it's a four seater with roof bars available, a reasonable boot, etc. All are great cars, just doing different things.

Tony cares more about the interior of a car. I put the exterior of a car as more important. Hence, I would never buy an ugly Porsche and would take any Lotus over them. @ChrisDorgan
@ChrisDorgan Жыл бұрын
I agree with where Tony is coming from but I agree with you Sam. He needs to drive it and leave his previous opinions behind. I test drove a 718 Cayman S when I had the M2 and thought it felt and sounded like a Toyota GT86 in comparison imo. The M2 was also way more fun and sounded better. Couldn’t bring myself to then spec a (the 4 cylinder) GTS at near £70k. Glad I didn’t because they shortly after released the 4.0l GTS. Would have thrown myself out the window had I gone down that road and ended up with a 4 cylinder GTS haha. Personally, because of what I want my cars for I would go for an Emira over a Cayman (too expensive and everyone has them) or F Type. F types are lovely and sound great but they’re too heavy for a decent b road drive and don’t have that interesting badge. Had an M2, loved it but wouldn’t go back to losing so much money on BMW’s because there’s nowhere to go with them to get into a car that’s a bit more special that holds it’s money. That lotus just seems to tick the box of if you want a cayman GTS or a baby MC20 or something like that and it actually works now at a decent price. It should also hold it money well. The 4 cylinder emira doesn’t interest me. Stickin with my manual AM roadster for now either way 🤪
