In this video we take a look at the E-7 E-Wing the legendary starfighter made by Incom Corporation and FrieTek Incorporated. In the recent Ahsoka series its become apart of the canon storyline and hopefully will play a big role in the New Republic Defense Fleet.

The appearance of the E-Wing on Lothal was one of the few things that made sense in Ahsoka. Lothal was known for starfighter factories. The E-Wing is a stripped down X-Wing, ready for mass production for the new republic, just like the TIE-Fighter for the Empire.

Maybe a lot of press ganged workers stuck around too. Since Fritech was scooping up all of Incom's assets maybe they told the workers, "You may have been forced to work here before but we will pay you well and you already have the experience needed." Plus a lot of those workers were actually local farmers whose land was trashed by doonium mining.

I get the impression that the E-Wing is like a budget version of the X-Wing in canon. Keeps all of the strengths of Incom fighters but is less complex and powerful than the X-Wing, meaning less cost for planets to buy for local defence forces.

Which would make a lot of sense for Lothal, which has a lot of resources that require a substantial defense force to deter anybody from pulling in with a fleet to loot the planet. But while pretty wealthy by Outer Rim standards, Lothal still doesn't have either the funding or the population of a Core world and thus would need a very starfighter-heavy defense fleet. If the E-wing is cheaper than the X-wing (both in terms of purchase cost and maintenance, due to the fixed wings and half as many engines) while also having a very hefty torpedo armament. Seems like exactly what Lothal would need.

I agree I see it more as a police interceptor than a fighter craft, which would explain why we see 2 more variations of the X-wing in the future and 1 more variation of the A-wing rather than widespread adoption of the E-wing.

I actually don't like The look of the e wing, but now in canon, without that third laser Canon, it does seem a little bit sleeker and looks better in my opinion.

@@chrisreilly1290the engines are actually safer separated like that. Even in the movies it was common to see an X wing gets destroyed when a single engine gets hit, because they are close together and are probably sharing the same linkages a failure cascade emerges and destroys the craft before the astromech unit can bypass it. Because the engines are that far apart they should be using their own independent hook ups and linkages that both prevents and allows easier by bypass of a damaged engine unit. The A10 has a similar setup, the engines are not as far apart but separate enough to survive a blown turbine.

Definitely looks better without the dorsal laser. Also, it is clear that the domed head of the astromech is *not* inside the vehicle, it is behind the cockpit. Yeah, concussion missiles were relatively easier to get, and weren't overkill in dogfights. Multi-role just allowed for variable payload according to the mission.

Ventral or nose mounted makes more sense to me. Ventral hinders field of view not to mention any "flash" effects.

@@bothellkenmore That's where the hardpoints come in, affix what is needed. With targeting computers and visor/canopy coatings, the flash effects might not be as bad.

On the E-Wing! In the EU, it was considered more complex and harder to maintain than the X-Wing. So proportionally the X-Wing always outnumbered it in field squadrons. The E-Wing was fielded as a breakthrough fighter - tip of the spear style to break through Imperial formations and engage them head on like a heavy fighter. IF one goes by the Battle of Orinda, several squadrons weren't launched as they were having maintenance issues and the captain of the carrier didn't want to send them into battle piecemeal, and save them for one big strike (Esesntial Guide to Warfare) Admittedly that's a lot of supposition and stuff not necessarily supported on 'screen' but the E-Wing never made up the share of fighters the X-Wing did. This could be due to Starfighter Command bias (It's not like Rogue Squadron would ever give up thier precious X-Wings) or issues with cost, maintenance, and complexity. Also personally Wedge Antilles (Rogue Squadron novel) preferred the R2 or R5 over the R7 as it made for a lower profile and harder target due to the 'dome' shape. But given that's a degree of centimeters I'm not sure anyone other than Wedge would offer that as reasoning and have it be accurate.

Agreed. Imagine having a fighter with 2 fewer engines and no moving s-foils being more of a maintainence problem. I love the E-wing and it's issues I believe we're written in due to X-wing bias. After all the E-wing would have been designed with all of the z-95 experiance and a wars worth of x-wing experiance, so only incompetence (doubtful) or bias should have dropped it, not that there haven't been many examples in the real world, even recently, (YF-23 and F--22).

The E-Wing stayed in consistent use. We saw it over the Yuzzhan Vong war, in the Second Galactic Civil War.. Some are seen in the last Wraith Squadron novel, which is seen after the second galactic war and roughly around the final 'novels' we got of that era. So that's at least a 40'ish or so year lifespan for the craft in constant combat use. Likely longer but just as that phase of the EU stops around then and moves ahead several decades.

@Wedgekree You do, but never in the numbers they were supposed to be. Instead of phasing out the X-wing and focusing on the E-wing, they just kept making new versions of the X-wing. Imagine instead of StealthXs with shadow bombs, imagine E-wings with their double ordinance capacity, and at least the possibility of adding external hard points for more, at least in a bomber part of a mission. Moving the laser on top to belly mounted so it could be worked on from the ground and not blind the pilot when fired is one move I would have made. Change the droid setup for more compatibility and regular X-wing laser cannons to dispel the issue with synthetic tibanna and there is your winning more robust and durable design. I do dislike widespread engines due to handling issues if there is some kind of damage, something that you see irl as well, however that is just my preference if we were to play with designs.

I think they ended up serving in different roles tactically. Nothing was /ever/ gonig to replace the X-Wing in the New Republic due to history. That was the fighter that won the Galactic Civil War. You were never going to see a complete replacement until the fighter wasn't competitive from a technological point of view. My personal take without looking at stats is that the X-Wing was faster and more maneuverable, and the E-Wing had more weapons and stronger shields. Each had small advantages over the other. Without looking at full stats (when you getinto things like how much a starfighter cost, maintenance requirements, etc).. The X-Wing was slightly easier to maintain thanks to the multiple decades of working on it. The design was proven, the technology mature, and any facility could handle them. The E-Wing, being slightly more complex, isn't quite as easy to do so. You just have the design differences the two have giving them different roles, but the immense institutional experience the X-Wing has is what keeps it the primary fighter. Nothing was ever going to fully take over ti's role due to it's history.

@Wedgekree cost I agree with due to the large manufacturing base after so long. Complex parts and actual mission to mission maintainence I disagree. The X-wing has twice the engines, which means twice the parts, an extra laser cannon and systems, as well as 4 moving s-foils, just on the surface. All those are extra parts that wear out and need to be replaced, and over time that costs space and handling, not just money. It also costs less time for mechanics having to handle fewer parts. I haven't read anything being more complex mechanically, only that they needed an R7 or newer droid, and the synthetic gas was an issue in the blasters. SW never really gets into reactors, electronics, and other such improvements, but I know that the navy is running into that issue. They want a new more powerful radar and all sorts of toys and want to put it on old vessel designs. The designers had to explain to them that the older designs literally didn't have enough Hull for cooling capacity. They needed a new ship. I imagine the X-wing being the P-40, old, reliable, and liked, but by the end of the war the P-51 had clearly taken the cake. And so on with every generation as electronics moved on. Do the old designs still work? Yes, can they incorporate some of the new stuff? Yes, but design slowly sees them outclassed. The same with the Z-95.

During Legends era SWU, there were basically four sources for new content: Comics, Novels, computer games, and the TTRPGs (d6 by WEG, and d20 by WotC) For a time if you were going to be greenlit as a producer of content, you were gifted. The entire TTRPG source book collection as reference material to try to make sure you stayed in and understood the parameters of the SWU.

I’d really like to think that the tie defender advanced factory that was on lothal was repurposed to build E wings. Most of the laborers were pressed into service but still developed skills in those areas.

I was just thinking that. I always like the idea of repurposed resources like that. Maybe when the New Republic took over they offered the laberors a chance to stay there and used their acquired skills but at a far wage rather than the slave wages under the Empire. I'm sure lots of them grew to like Lothal, outside of what the Empire was forcing them to do.

There's no way a planetary governor would allow a perfectly good and cutting edge starfighter factory go waste. They are definitely building something, something that has a robust body, engines, shields and weaponry. So if not E wing, then even A, X, U, and B wings are also solid candidates because they all need the same or similar tooling as a defender and would probably easy to get a license and plans for as well. Then again, if the still have team that designed the tie defender and people that who have experience building it, they might just keep building it and sell it.

I like that the E-Wing looks like it could actually work as a normal fighter jet, at least more than most starfighters, especially with the removal of the top-mounted laser cannon, which would be much better nose-mounted.

To me, The E Wing seems to be able to fill the role of Close Air/Space Support, similar to that of the Stuka and Dauntless Dive Bombers of World War 2, able to dish out legal damage to hard targets with the speed to get out of danger in a hurry after dropping the pain

The E-Wing really needs to have it's Dorsal mounted 3rd Laser Cannon reversed in orientation by 180° It should be aft facing, on it's own pivot mount and let a dedicated targeting computer protect the pilots aft zone. This way a nice wide 120° cone of point defense where if anybody gets behind the pilot, will get shot at, even if the pilot is flying away. The main two wing tip mounted Laser Cannons needs to be of higher wattage. This way, it takes fewer shots to down your enemies. The aft cannon should be a single barrel version of the forward cannons, strong enough to be a serious threat to anything chasing you.

@@baru6891 Ok, if you want to go that cheap, you might as well make a TIE Fighter. The point of the E-Wing is that it's supposed to improve on the X-Wing. Being able to cover your flank is a improvement Something the old ARC-170 was able to do, but replace the rear gunner with a IG style DROID brain for the auto turret. This lets the pilot focus on the mission and less about protecting their flank. We all saw how effective a IG style DROID brain could be in "The Mandalorian". Imagine what you could do with one installed on your StarFighter and have it protect you while you do your mission. Somebody shows up on your tail out of no-where, boom, the Rear Auto-Turret will take care of it. The pilot can focus on the mission.

I thought it was funny to see an E-Wing on Lothal. I play the X-Wing Miniatures Game. In the game, the E-Wing was released at the same time the TIE Defender was released, and they share very similar game stats. We know that the creative team on Rebels enjoyed the game (or at least the minis….). Seeing the E-Wing on Lothal makes me wonder if the TIE Defender manufacturing facilities were repurposed to manufacture E-Wings.

The U-wing remains my favorite shuttle. I mean its a fighter but its also a troop transport. Kinda like how the skipray blastboat is a bomber but also a capital ship. There are a handful of ships that fall into this weird multi-role category.

@@DrkLrdKYep, bombs, proton torpedoes, ion cannons, laser cannons it has them all. Does anyone even remember how many hardpoints there were on that thing? Edit: Sorry, 18 configurable hard points, 2 laser cannons, and a quad turbolaser cannon turret. No ion cannons, but they could use ion bombs or ion torpedoes if their hardpoints were setup for it.

It's kind of humorous how you can take one look at the E-Wing and tell that its not a Ralph McQuarrie design, because it doesn't look as good as any of his fighter designs....X-Wing, Y-Wing, Colonial Viper, Buck Rogers Starfighter, etc. The Maestro can be imitated but not duplicated.

I wouldnt call it a successor, i would say its a cheaper defense fighter than the X-wing. Its like the USAF, they have a high/low capability fighters with (F-15/F-16)(F-22/F-35) the X-wing/E-wing is the same

This is the first time E-Wings have looked even decent to me. They've always looked way too clunky and awkward to sell their position as the replacement for the X-Wing, I'd sooner believe they were a pre-clone wars peacetime patrol fighter or a budget option during the galactic civil war. In this form they're far more fitting of their status, but I still can't really see them as the same "mainline" fighter the X-Wing was.

Seeing as an xwing variant exists in episode 7 its likely the New Republic are taking this path with the E wing to both reduce military spending and to get away from the image of war time. The X Wing is a very famous starfighter from the galactic Civil War and has all the connotation with War attached to it. Also the reduced spending on military assets would necessitate a cheaper asset as defense is still required even during peacetime and the X Wing was an expensive starfighter especially compared to the cheaper Tie Fighter. The E Wing seems like a middle ground of the two

Counter point to the logistics of 1 space craft vs many is that while only having one spacecraft reduces the logistics yrain it also means that if supplies get cut off you lose the logistics of an entire platform. If you have multiple platforms you have redundancy. Also because the E-wing is an incom ship pilots would be able to jump between other incom ships and be able to fly. Most incom ships were designed so that if you flew one you could fly them all. That's how Luke could go from Skyhopper to X-wing to snowspeeder with ease.

Certainly the e wing was a valuable addition to the new republic fleet with its own unique and specialities as a replacement to the x wing. However, the initial teething problems it suffered meant that the x wing remained a favourite of many pilots and led to upgraded versions of the x wing coming into service as well.

Makes sense for e-wings to be on Lothal given that is where the tie defender prototypes were being built and tested and it had production facilities for military vehicles. New Republic likely took over those facilities and its a key design and test facility for them.

I love the E-wings on Empire at War with the Empire at War remake mod. I can clear a map with nothing but E-wings star fighters

So the E-wing we see is technically a later model E-wing, called a Type B E-Wing. The original models, in the books, were designed and deployed during the Thrawn campaign and World Devestator assault on Mon Cal so there is some anachronism here compared to the Legacy material. The first generation had the 3 advanced medium blasters, but later versions only had the 2 wing mounted ones when it became apparent that they were hitting as hard as older heavy blaster cannons, but the trio put a lot of strain on the synthetic tibana gas supply needed to power them. Later versions also modified the astromech socket to accommodate older model droids and moved some of the processing hardware and software from the droid to the ship itself. Which is why the R7 was being built in the first place, the older droids didnt have enough processing power to manage all the systems on the E wing. Deployment wise the Ewing line were usually used along side Xwings as a tip of the spear unit, due to their heavier shielding and armor even compared to the newest XJ Xwing series, who still relied a lot on speed and maneuverability for defense, even if their shields were better than the original X65. A huge advantage to the Disney E-wing vs. the EU E-Wing is in getting in the fighter to begin with...the dorsal laser would interfere with the pilot's entry and egress.

I think they should make the top cannon of the Ewing deployable so that it retracts back and tucks into the top of the hull so that you get the “lock s foils in attack position” command type of payoff in some future scene. Design wise this would also make sense as it would allow the pilot and astromech to enter the cockpit through the top as on the Xwing without the interference of the cannon

I wonder if the E-wing we see is missing the top gun and difference in Droid location because of a version difference. Maybe this is a interceptor version vs space superiority version? Nothing to say one way or the other as of yet so we will have to see.

I'm glad they made these look cool. It seemed their legends appearances were all wonky-looking disappoint. Does seem that for whatever reason, the Republic went on with improved X-wing lines and versions of most of the 'classics.' Maybe they all ended up with newish or more extreme specializations, I dunno.

I always thought that E wing which was my personal fav. Was the love child of the X wing and A Wing. In table top gaming X Wing game first edition I would play Corran Horn as the E wing pilot. The maneuver dial was better than the x wing but not as good as the a wing. As far as armaments it had the fire power of x wing and defense of the a wing.

I swear I remember multiple bits in Legends that mention an E-Wings cannons are about 50% more powerful than an X-Wing, meaning they actually pack more firepower.

My recollection is that the E-Wing's cannons were supposed to be more powerful, but due to an early problem with the tibanna gas, they had problems and weren't as powerful as they were supposed to be. I believe an early fix involved putting a lot more power into the laser cannons.

There's also the fact that there's only two laser cannons, so even if it's using the exact same power plant as an X-Wing, it would be able to cycle the energy more quickly

I really liked the X-Wing from a design point of view. The setup really made dog fighting simpler with the four weapons creating a box out to some distance. Just like older Earth fighter aircraft setup for cannons and machine guns. Depending on the setup of the point at where the four came together you had a large field of fire both before and after so the chance to hit was better with at least one of them. If we assume that that point was set for the target distance with some adjustment possible on the fly that is a large area of space covered.

Agreed. It looks like it'd get in the way of the cockpit canopy from opening and closing, even if the canopy could slide forward for access. Just having a cannon blasting away on top of the pilot where he's sitting seems like a good way to blind and disorient him during a dogfight.

Was really happy that the E-Wing is now official and moved from legends to cannon. But if I remember right, with the E-Wing, the ship was retrofitted to accommodate older astromech droids.

In Legends (and now Canon), the first models of the E-Wing were designed only to accommodate R7 Series Astromechs but also suffered from many problems that many E-Wing pilots switched back to the T-65XJ X-Wing. The model in here is the Type B E-Wing, a much more refined and later model that made the E-WIng incredibly more advanced than the X-Wing (except for the T-65XJ I think) and all of its initial problems were completely fixed. And the astromech seating or system was properly redesigned to be able to accommodate the older Astromech series as you said in your comment.

In the mind of the Star Wars fan NO it cannot replace the X-wing. That's not to say it might be better head to head or suit the needs of the New Republic better in universe. Just that fans will always want to see the iconic X-wing.

I never really knew much of the old EU so have no attachments to the old E-Wing. But when I first saw the Lego set featuring it I thought its design was pretty cool. I think I prefer the new verson as well. It feels more like natural evolution of the X-Wing. The droid socket makes more sense than the one requiring a whole new astromech. And losing the blaster over the cockpit I think gives it a better design profile. I actually got really lucky and got a Lego E-Wing on eBay. No pilot or droid, just the ship. And it looks pretty amazing close up. I just put my personal minifig in the cockpit and a favorite R2 unit in the socket.

Not knowing all the details about the canon version of the E-Wing I can only guess about it’s capabilities but I do like the alterations they made to it for Ahsoka. The canopy laser canon was a aesthetic choice but would have blinded the pilot whenever it was used, so that was a good adjustment. The fact that the astromech can now duck down into its compartment is a good precaution especially if there is a lot of debris or laser fire, sucks to not be able to fit other types of astromechs but every model has a draw back. If it has as many proton torpedoes as the EU says it does then it will definitely be a formidable fighter in squadrons, and flying solo, but I doubt the Republic is interested in risking their shiny new toys in the Outer Rim (where they might actually need them) and judging by the bureaucrats in charge of defense assets in the Mandalorian that’s exactly what’s going to happen unless Hera, Ezra and Leia can convince them otherwise.

i may not like some of disneys creative choices story wise with star wars in the past decade: but one thing i cannot fault them on has been their ship and droid designs. the original legends E-Wing was cool and all, but that placement of the third cannon over the pilot canopy was always awkward and cumbersome design wise. and the new version of the E-Wing is also sleeker and definitely LOOKS more like a ship that was supposed to combine the best of the A-Wing and X-Wing traits. she now looks and feels like a sleek, fast, and shiny new fighter ready to bring the hurt on the republics enemies. i LOVE the new design for the E-Wing. shes absolutely gorgeous.

Hi guys. I sort of see the X wing as the F15 and the E wing as sort of a F16. One is the most successful fighter in history while the other is easy quick and can do many things well. Love them both.

I like that they removed the 3rd upper cannon on the E-Wing. I never liked it. It would prevent the pilot from getting in or out quickly and maybe even interfere with ejection systems. It also ruined the otherwise-sleek lines of the bodywork.

I actually super hate the design of the E-Wing, however i would really like to see the TIE-D Fighters make an appearance, hopefully as a way to supplement his forces, Thrawn produces a wings of TIE-D fighters, that would be cool.

E-Wing is like a Super Hornet to the X-Wing which is kind of like a Crusader The crusader was a good fighter, but generations of pilots and generations of technology later the Super Hornet is just that much better and is a multi-role strike fighter.

The E-wing is an escort fighter The E-wing's one major flaw other than it's weapons issue is it's slower hyperdrive. At x2 even the Y-wing is faster at FTL. Where the A/B/X/Y-wings all have a x1 hyperdrive. A 2 hour jump for them, is a 4 hour jump for the E-wing. It's job is to hang around the bigger ships and transports.

Can't help it, to me the boxy E-Wing always looked more primitive, like how the F-16 Viper is essentially a small low-cost platform that re-used the engines on the F-15 Eagle, but only half as many.

I can understand pilots would dislike the R7 series. An astromech is their co pilot and confidante, they go all over the galaxy with their partner. Also, many times the pilot is saved because their astromech Droid can interface with almost any ship functionally. The E wing becomes a faustian bargain you get a decent fighter but not only do you have to trade your Droid but you cannot use anywhere but an E wing. That is not an offer many veteran pilots would be willing to take, especially if they like the Droid partner they have. So I see that the E wing would mostly be assigned to new pilots, who lack that bias, and older pilots who lost their Droid partner in the line of duty and might as well move on.

The evening is more of the spiritual successor to the a wing platform. In some ways it is a compromise between the a wing and the app's wing. But it is very much more. The inner sector as opposed to the space superiority fighter. The bee wing is the compromise between the x wing and the bomber configuration of the y wing in the rebellion era. So at least in legends, the x wing divides and goes sort of to both sides with the other two fighters of its contemporaries in the next fighter generation.

I see the canon E-wing more as a police interceptor than a fighter craft, which would explain why we see 2 more variations of the X-wing in the future and 1 more variation of the A-wing rather than widespread adoption of the E-wing. It seems to be a cheap version of the X-wing that is just as reliable with a little more speed closer to an A-wing without sacrificing shields and reliability.

The way I think I see it, is that the Ewing is kind of like the more local type of fighter ship, unlike say the X-Wing which is far more ranging and patrol type ship. Also given the fact that the x-wing is still in the sequel trilogies just a new model tells us that it doesn't replace them, it fills a different role than they do Maybe the Ewing is not actually a Starfighter, it's an interplanetary defender craft. Designed to be based off of a planetary defense force. Or even short-range defense within a system. I would say if they didn't put a hyperdrive on it which I doubt because they have an astromech, The idea that they would make a ship that is a little bit cheaper to produce with less complicated parts that can be produced easily would be a good ship to have for that kind of mass production, not as cheap as the tie But also it is more robust

Any blade-like protrusion from an aerospace fighter is going to act like a wing in atmosphere. And, you know, there's a whole production company pulling this stuff out. It might not always be Dave dictating the changes to the stuff you remember loving from Legends. There might be valid production reasons to make some of these changes to bring this stuff to the screen that you're not aware of.

Yeah, the basic TIE fighter was crap... but from a logistical standpoint using it as the basis for every fighter variant meant it freed up training and logistics problems.

I really think the central cannon should be relocated to below the cockpit, maybe even as a twin set. Having the wide fire base at the tips of the wings really don't make sense for accurate aiming. I also wish there were more hardboints under the wings for bombs and missiles. I rather like the look of a high missile capacity airframe IRL and could work in Star Wars. It's why I really like the design of the K wing

As much as I like the E wing, I really dislike the Thruster placement. If the thrusters were closer to the main fuselage I would not complain as it would make sense, but they are out there begging to be shot.
