Actually it was the TIE Avenger which was in the hands of the forces of a renegade Imperial Admiral. The TIE Defender was deployed to eliminate them, but that experience lead to the Empire deciding that they needed a strike craft which could eliminate Defenders just in case history repeated itself. In one of the missions in the TIE Fighter Defender of the Empire expansion the player takes on Avengers and an Imperial class Star Destroyer in a Defender - with Darth Vader as your wingman! The briefing specifically advises you not to try to give the Dark Lord orders!

The TIE Defender would have screwed up the Rebels if the Emperor didn't choose Tarkin Space Dark ball with it's big *Pew Pew* cannon, but Thrawn idea, to make the perfect fighter... That guy is a genius.

Well I could see an argument that the rebels could have stolen the plans for the defender (or stolen the ships themselves en-masse). Can't really steal a TIE-fighter (no hyperdrive to get away) Maybe Thrawn should've suggested something a bit less "Everything in on package" starfighter (But obviously a vast improvement on the standard TIE. An Interceptor with Shields and Missiles would've likely sufficed. Cheap-ish to deploy in numbers but still a vast improvement over what they had

spoilers ahead. in Thrawn Alliances, Thrawn gave Vader full command of his Chimeras Tie Defender wing. after pushing it to its limits in every aspect, Vader told Thrawn that he would support the Defender project and even talk to the Emperor about using it more. only requests Vader had were that it be made faster, more armor and less complicated controls so that pilots could better use it.

Personally I would have invested in improving anti fighter corvettes, like highly modifying the Lancer to have even more anti-fighter laser cannons and and upgrade to the engines. Producing a large quantity of them could help fill out the weak points the imperial fleet had. You could still produce the cheap tie fighters and tie interceptors because at the point they there to harass the rebel fighters while they dodge the hailstorm of lasers from the lancers. Tie defenders are nice but single fighters are easier to steal, a lancer could prove much harder to take. Just my two cents.

@@egoalter1276 Vader's tie was the Tie/x1, the Tie Avenger is similar in some aspects to the Tie/x1 but was ultimately the successor of it.

I would go as far as to say that the Tri-Fighter is the best starfighter in all of Star Wars. I think you shouls have talked a bit more about the missile launcher , because this is the weapon that gives the ship a amssive degree of flexbility. Load it up with Buzz-Droid missiles, and a squadron of them can effectively deny the enemy starfighters massive swathes of space, which can be used to keep the enemy bombers way from your capital ships. Or give it some Concussion missiles, and in swarms those babies can even become a threat to heavy enemy units.

On a per-unit basis, yes. But how many Tris are you are getting for a single Defender?

Individually I'd have to agree. The Colicoids could certainly build 'em. However, if we're factoring in cost, deployment numbers, etc as well, I would argue, for a bunch of reasons that are too long for a KZfaq comment, that the Vulture Droid is the most effective, successful and influential starfighter in Star Wars history. Individually weak, but nevertheless so potent in the way it was used that latter Republic designs were built around trying to counter it and yet STILL couldn't gain control of the starfighter theatre. TIE Fighters are the Empire trying, and failing, to copy its success.

Outclassed by the Tri-Droid one-on-one and massively outnumbered by the Vulture Droid, like everything else, in true battle. The TIE Interceptor was also only cheaper than the Advanced TIE and "formidable" compared to the TIE Fighter. It was nothing like as cheap as the Vulture Droid, nor powerful like the Tri, especially without any missile launchers. In its own era, it was already outclassed by the Rebels.

There's no disputing the power of the tri-fighter. Happy to see the praise of the Clone Wars era since IMHO that's where the best ships, fighters, vehicles, and tactics lie

There were little to no intelligent tactics used during the clone wars. Even in the comics and books the tactics could be inconsistent, in the movies and 2D/3D shows they’re absolutely atrocious. Using Napoleon era tactics when you have automatic firearms and aircraft/spacecraft. A lot of things in Star Wars can be explained but the abysmal tactics just can’t.

Legacy Era, I don't agree. Remember that the Twin-Tail is actually considered obsolete by the Galactic Alliance - the Crossfire is it's replacement, which is why the Jedi were able to get them for use on the cheap. It is more manouverable than the Crossfire, but given the Predator is even moreso, going with a less manouverable but better shielded and armed Crossfire does seem to me the better bet.

I seem to also remember a Sith star fighter Krayt introduced with his cyborg Sith Troopers that was obscenely powerful. I think it was called the Annihilator class

Yes, the Annihilator was obscene. It could only be piloted by cyborg Sith plugged in, and had weapons that pierced shields.

as bad as EA and their business practices are (and they are bad, and I'm not just talking about microtransactions; I'm still very annoyed w/ how they dropped support/stopped fixing Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect Andromeda, along w/ the years of destroying studios like Bullfrog and Westwood), you can't deny that the quality of their games' visuals are great. They're very pretty. Almost tempting to buy them for the visuals alone. Almost. :) Would've probably gotten EA's Battlefront 2 if the story weren't 'meh' (I enjoyed the 'Inferno Squad' book+audiobook...then just watched a playthrough of the game on youtube. Even then, had it been good, I'd probably have gotten it...I guess, in a way, it was a good thing that it wasn't good /shrugs)

I've always loved the TIE Defender, ever since it first appeared in the TIE Fighter: Defenders of the Empire PC game (which is also the source of the Missile Boat and others). Flying it was a freaking dream. Those three PC Star Wars flight games (X-wing and X-wing vs TIE fighter were the 1st and 3rd) introduced a great variety of spacecraft to Star Wars.

Someone here thinks Luke Skywalker was the best fighter pilot of the Galactic Civil War? Much to learn, you have! This video is on the Legends timeline - look up how Wedge Antilles (Red 2 at Yavin IV) did when took over running Rogue Squadron (spoilers - only pilot with 2 Death Star kill markings on his fighter, TIE fighter kill markings done in different colours to represent entire 12 ship squadrons or 72 ship wings because otherwise they couldn’t fit them all on his X-wing, only pilot with Yavin, Hoth, Endor, Bakura and Coruscant Battle ribbons, the list goes on and on!). Or his greatest adversary, Baron Soontir Fel of the 181st Imperial Fighter group, the fighter pilot Darth Vader was rumoured to be so worried about facing in training missions that he had his fighter modified to give him an extra edge against the Baron.

@@blueburger4938 Anikan and Luke only make it because of the Force. But, Poe? He's ok, but Legends Wedge Antillies would fly circles around Poe. Wedge has the single highest Kill count in the entire Galaxy (he has to paint silhouettes in gross lots, one silhouette being 144 kills), and has TWO HALF DEATH STARS on his record. He outflew an entire Yuuzhan Vong coralskipper squadron in a crippled X-Wing, decimated Kuat Drive Yards TIE Fighters while flying a Squint (TIE Interceptor) with a toy Ewok strapped to his chest. He survived the Galactic Civil War, the Yuuzahn Vong invasion, and the Second Galactic Civil War. Compared to Wedge Antillies, no pilot even comes close

Trips (TIE Defenders) are better. Shields, concussion missiles/proton torps, tractor beam, quad lasers and ion cannons while maintaining superior speed and maneuverability than the X-Wing all make the Trip the deadliest starfighter in the GCW. Even WEDGE flew carefully around Trips

I think the later generation X wings deserve a mention too, especially the Stealth X. Needs to have a jedi pilot to make full use of it, but between the stealth features and the shadow bombs, those things could take anything from a fighter up to a corvette single handed.

I'm always rather shy about commenting, and I have no idea of this will be seen at all, but I want to say that your videos are very helpful, interesting, and all around enjoyable. I consider myself a huge fan of Star Wars, having been a fan since the age of 2 (with myself being 19 now), but I've never given too much thought to the ships. With your videos on ships, ship types, ship versus, and other ship battles, it's now made me look at each Star Wars movie in a different light, especially scenes with space battles and such. I'm a new subscriber, but I already look forward to your videos every day, and I've been binge watching them to catch up, so in short I just wished to say thank you for being a good content provider.

jonas.205 i believe the new republics started to favor cruisers and awesome starfighters do to heavy demilitarization after the empire(basically trying very hard to look very different from the empire) but theu did still have a few secret dreadnoughts though this is info i learned awhile ago

They still had a lot of capital ships, but the New Republic always had very capable starfighters with hyperdrives, so they could operate independently.

I would have separated the list by Role as well as time period; Interceptor/Space Superiority, Bomber/Attacker, and Multirole. I agree with you’re Clone Wars assessment that the Tri-Fighter would be the best Interceptor with the ARC-170 being the best Multirole. Best Bomber would be contested between Y-Wing and Hyena. Galactic Civil War-era is more complicated. Bomber would be contested between Missile Boat and B-Wing. Multirole would either be TIE Defender or X-Wing. Interceptor would either be Defender, TIE Interceptor, or A-Wing. It all really depends on if Defender is put in the Multirole or Interceptor Slot. New Republic-era is no-brainer. E-Wing for Interceptor, XJ-Series X-Wing for Multirole, and K-Wing for the Bomber. Don’t know enough about Legacy-era to comment.

I love the K-wing, it looks absolutely clunky and ridiculous but I love its weapon loadout, and love reminding my star wars fan friends that the thing somehow packed a quad turbolaser according to some sources. Who here would love to see a series where Eckhart designs his own, unique ships. There'd be limits based on function, era specific technology, cost per ship, ect. Plus, it's Eckhartsladder, the best Star Wars channel, you know it'd be amazing.

Here is an idea, design your own "ugly." What frankenstien's monster would you want to fly around the star wars galaxy in. I personally think it would be funny to strap some LAAT engines to an ATTE and shove it all into a hyperspace ring and make myself a little gunship.

TIE Defender definitely my pick. I know a single Missile Boat can take down a flight group of TIE Defender easily, but TIE Defender is a complete fighter. TIE Defender has formidable shields, 4 laser cannon, and .. ION CANNON. Ion Cannon comes pretty handy against big targets. I usually just disable transport, shuttle, escort shuttles, assault transports, corvettes, and destroy them later. TIE Defender can also be equipped with tractor beam, very handy when against rogue TIE Advanced.

The Missle Boat's SLAM system wasn't mentioned. Being able to take energy from the sheilds, cannon and tractor beam and add it to the SubLight Acceleration Motor to boost the velocity of the Missle Boat to sometimes 100%+ speed boost. However. When you put it's cost and the cost of the 160 misses together, it's about 120,000 credits in missles, not including tracotor beam. Oh, and small production run means a lot of credits per ship for R&D. It's basically the XB-70 Valkery of Star Wars.

Jagged, Tahiry and Ashik used Tie defenders to evacuate Gillad Pelleaon when Daala and mostly Drikl Lacersen baraged it with baradium nukes.... even almost 50 years after inception the fighters managed to hold well against turbolasers and and whatver could be scrambled against them (although admitedly at that time imperial moffs did not have the most up to date hardware in personal arsenals... and neither did Daala - though even their forces managed to hold up against most modern ships of the line Empire of the Hand sent to help Jagged.)

Hehe, The Defender - I love to do nothing more than fill my unit cap with these things when playing Star Wars - Empire at War. They are great at just about everything.

Hi nice video! You chose the Tie/Defender as one of the best. The First Order made the Tie Silencer, which was partially based off the Tie/Defender. Do you think the Tie Silencer was stronger/faster or was it a downgrade as starfigther?

TIE Defender is a very cool, very powerful ship - but back when I played the TIE Fighter game (and add on packs), I personally preferred flying the TIE Avenger. Smaller target profile, pretty close in speed and agility, decent shields and parity with the Defender in laser and missile armament (no ion cannons).
