This is the best James and thank you. The debate of the fragrance aspects of skincare does my head in. If you like it, fine and equally, if you don’t, don’t but don’t tell me I shouldn’t. You do you and I’ll do me. By you I don’t mean you James, but you in general. Also other influencers who do the same type of video content as you do and then make it seem as though they thought of it. Come on, be original and do your own thing. I would follow your content any day because you are the most uncomplicated influencers out there. It’s never a drama or an attempt to bring a company down, just your opinion, which I value.

It also drives me up the bloody wall when somebody won't stop talking about "saving the animals" and only buying vegan, cruelty free products but suddenly asking them to maybe not fund literal neo-nazis is "too far" and "unreasonable". You've got all the time in the world to yammer on about vegan alternatives for this, that and the other that you "extensively research", but finding replacements for the moisturiser that could be funding hate groups is too much?

The only issue I have with fragranced cosmetics and/or skincare is if a product is highly scented, it can cause migraines and epic nausea (trying to throw up when you have nothing to throw up is absolute arse) which is actual hell, but not allergic reactions (at least, yet to experience that reaction).
@Dunika
@Dunika 2 жыл бұрын
The fact that "fragrance" doesn't narrow anything down and could be literally anything it's what makes people with serious allergies worry. "Fragrance" could mean up to 2500 different allergens that are almost always unlisted. Most common allergic reaction to fragrance in creams is contact dermatitis and irritation, which doesn't sound that serious, but also headaches and nausea. If you inhale it (like in a perfume) or accidentally eat it, it can cause an allergic reaction that can be confused with asthma, and can be deadly.

YES! DHC and Nivea are way worse when it comes to bigotry than the average brand. But...I can't judge somebody with sensitive skin for using their products if that's what's accessible, affordable, and non-irritating for them. I'm an environmentalist with a disability. A lot of the choices I make are NOT eco friendly and are things that other environmentalists would judge me for. Unfortunately, it's what I need to do to get through the day. As Domestic Blisters says on TikTok, you can't save the rainforest if you're depressed. I guess you also can't fight bigotry when your skin feels like it's on fire.😆

This issue of cancelling brands in my case emerged when the Depp versus Heard case came up in 2020. No way was I going to use skincare and haircare products endorsed by a woman who perjured the courts in Australia, the UK and America and uses social movements like feminism for her own gain. Synthetics formulated in a lab also do not have antigens on them like products taken from nature do. Antigens are what cause the allergic reactions (rashes, irritations, hives, anaphylaxis, some forms of acne, etc) that some products cause. And actually most products formulated for sensitive skin are synthetics because, well, your body can't flood you with histamine, create antibodies.....you know, have an allergic reaction to something that does not have antigens on the outside of its cells. That is a simplified explanation, but just research it a little if you want to learn all the ins and outs of the antigen/antibody response.

For me, personally, with fragrance, all I wanted was a fragrance free option and clear labeling. I never expected other consumers to follow what I do for my situation. My annoyance was towards companies and the fact that there were few options and labeling sucked (both of which are still issues). I never cared if other people used a scented face wash. If you like it and your skin handles it well do whatever you want.

One thing most people don't realize is that there are tons of people who use skincare but don't actually watch any skincare content and the only thing making them use those products is marketing and user experience. If fragrance is what gets people to get to wear their sunscreen and take off their makeup at the end of the day, that's definitely a role that it's serving.

I tried another product from them and felt punched in the face by the fragrance. I ended up using it on other parts of my body. It was a deluxe sample size. That is a tip I ask most consumers to use with respect to waste. Understandably some products need time to use and see but for initial applications I always go sample size. Many times that tells me how the product will wear, if it’s itchy or irritating, how it dries down on my skin tone, the texture and yes the scent etc etc. Many times I am pleasantly surprised by a product that gets the scent right even if fragrance is involved. Edit: buying sample can also be a chance to troubleshoot. If you try something and have an issue you can also see if the application etc

With all due respect, I have to staunchly disagree with your fragrance-free statement. I understand that people who need fragrance-free are a small minority of the population but that doesn’t take away our need for fragrance-free options or our right to request and discuss that need. The only reason we have a more diverse array of options is because people have started discussing the harm around fragrance and saying we need to drop the conversation now and be happy with the options we have is dismissive. Everyone else can use fragrance-free products no problem but the rest of us can’t just pick up any product and put it on our face.

Thank you. There is a lot to say for the pure pleasure and joy of using skincare and what it can do to your mental health. It's great that a product actually has a useful effect on my skin, but the bit where it makes me feel good for a moment as I am able to slow down my thoughts and simply enjoy the pure joy of putting it on, the sense of smell can really add to that experience. Although I do use a lot of fragrance-free products on my face, I do love to use fragranced products on my body, and those products I have found for my face that smell good, I absolutely love.

Just a quick comment about fragrance...I have very sensitive skin. Physicians Formula highlighter has a strong fragrance (it smells like roses). I love it and I've never had a bad reaction to it. Your information is spot-on. You weren't too harsh 😉

Yoooo same lol!! I agree with you. I have eczema and redness-prone skin and my routine is mostly fragrance free but that was honestly because that's only what I heard LOL. My holy grail moisturizer for my eczema, Etude House Soon Jung 2x intensive barrier cream technically contains a masking scent but it literally HEALS AND SOOTHES my skin so!

James you’re so funny the face you made after you said “yet they’re asking me to review Jefree Star’s skincare” 😂 Also re: fragrance debate. La Roche Pousay has the nastiest smelling SPF ever and I think it’s bc they didn’t add any fragrance. It’s smells like nothing and everything at the same time

I love this so much because it touches on some of my issues with the skincare world. 1. Fragrance. I love fragrance, sue me. It’s not a pamper session for me if the user experience is not pleasurable. I don’t mind fragrance free sometimes, but I don’t have a problem with fragrance. 2. New launches from celebrities. If you have a problem with celebrity lines, I think it’s hypocritical to not mind influencer lines. Celebrities access experts, skincare influencers access experts. Both are chasing the bag, regardless of what spurred them to launch the line ( I’ve struggled with my skin for so long and couldn’t find something that catered to my needs so I decided to do something about it- here’s my line 😐). 3. I don’t support brand X. Can’t believe you’re still supporting this brand. First of all, the brand you support may be one I don’t support because of my own personal reason. Purchase what you want from who you want, or not. Just don’t get on your high horse about it. You don’t support L’Oréal but you support skinceuticals. Hate to break it to you … I could go on and on. Thanks for this video James. Thank you.

I used to avoid all fragrance because my skin is sensitive, but over time I've realised not all fragrances are created equal and some of my favourites have fragrance now! I find large brands thst do a lot of R&D formulate fragrance better than small indie ones. for example LRP fragrance doesn't typically irritate my skin!

James, I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I stumbled upon your videos randomly couple of months ago on Facebook, and slowly became fan of yours. I love how you analyse information and help all of us navigate better in skincare and generally in researches. Thanks to you I found my skincare remedy after I moved countries and nothing was helping me here in Germany. My skin now is clean, my confidence is back. This is beyond important for a person who 2 months ago couldn't go to the gym without makeup (yes, I was that ashamed of my face). What you're doing is important and you have a great personality🤍✨

I don't mind some fragrance, however, when a brand uses a lot of fragrance, and that is all I can smell for the next few hours, that is a problem. I have rosacea, citrus makes my redness worse, so I avoid those. Thank you! Glad you're feeling better!! 💖💖💖

For me personally I love all the new fragrance-free options. My issue is that I generally hate the fragrances brands choose! I don't like them lol I like choosing my fragrance separately from the products I need to use daily. Some days I like fresh and citrus scents, sometimes I want a warm, musky scent. So it's more that I'm a picky person than I'm worried about allergies😁

Ditto. Plus I heard the fragrances cover the unpleasant odors of some of the ingredients. I do not know if this is true but heard recently that strawberry scent is used to counteract squalene which is an algae and does not smell nice.

The amount of teenagers/pre-teens that come in to Sephora and try to buy the STRONGEST ingredients in products that will 100% destroy their baby skin baffles me! I have to try and explain to them NOT to use a specific product because tiktok told them and that they need to find something that works for them. Sometimes they listen and sometimes they don’t 🥲

Everyone's already covered the fragrance thing, so I won't go into it as much (I used to work at LUSH and the anti-fragrance & anti-paraben crusaders who'd come in just to yell at me about the product ingredients made me want to melt into the floor) But I love that you addressed the "problematic" thing. I feel like the shaming game (shaming others for using "problematic" products) has become a huge pastime on twitter and it absolutely DOES come from a place of privilege. Like you mentioned - everyone's got their breaking points. Find what resonates with you, find where your lines are, fight the fights that are important to you, and let people enjoy things.

James - I love a good complaint rant and yours is justified. I hope you are feeling better. I've had allergies to perfumes, dyes and soaps most of my 62 years and I'm grateful for any fragrance free/dye free products out there. Back in the 70s, 80s and even 90s, it was hard to get fragrance/dye free options so I just had to try stuff to figure out if it was a trigger product. I know my circumstance is unusual so I don't have problems with brands using products I'm allergic to because I just don't buy them. I get that fragrance can make skin a luxurious experience. Fortunately, there are so many good brands/products that are fragrance free so I don't feel I'm missing out.

I feel like a failed master esthetician because I never warned people away from fragrance. 😂I've always said it's down to personal preference and whether you like the smell or not. I've actually had someone react badly to a sensitive skin cleanser that substituted fragrance with a lavender essential oil. As for brands being evil or problematic everything in this world is going to be a problem for someone else. Everything. I can't think of a single thing that everyone agrees on. Support brands and products that align with your morals and values. I think I said this same thing a few videos ago, but it still stands.

@@cannsmith My school brought in an "expert" on essential oils and we had an entire day of instruction about her extensive product range and what they claimed to do. I had a migraine from the smell for days. She actually claimed that lavender was inert and that because of the modern world we're "more sensitive" and likely to develop an allergy because of it. 🙄

I have acute adult allergies after a chemotherapy treatment I did years ago, and I literally became allergic to a med I had taken for over a decade, overnight. Luckily I was in the ER when they gave me the med and I went into anaphylaxis, I definitely wouldn't be here if I went into anaphylaxis anywhere else. But yeah, I'm more susceptible to having acute allergies, but literally anybody can have that happen. Allergies come and go, so yeah, just because you're not allergic to something now doesn't mean you'll never be allergic to it

It took me a long time to realize I have an allergy to specific "fragrance" essential oils/extracts as well as a general allergy to parfum which varies pretty greatly. I usually just avoid fragrance/essential oils because it's not worth having my face swell up or to get a rash. Also I used to overly trust dermatologists, but that changed after I went to one for the first time and was told the only way to get my acne under control was to go on Acutane. And when I told her I wouldn't/couldn't afford it, she would keep bringing it up at every appointment. Really turned me off from dermatologists in general
