I printed my dwarf army over a week with a small 3d printer. I love models that are printed in a single piece so I only have to glue them to the base. Printing complete 10 man units per batch is great.

A small note about ABS like, nylon like and general toughness resins with IPA. You should not actually wash the models in IPA, IPA turns those sorts of resins far more brittle than they should be if the models swim in it for more than a minute. IPA is for rinsing and the final clean. For the actual wash you should use resin cleaning fluid, which does need to be rinsed off. I soak my prints in hot water anyway for support removal so it doesn't really add any extra steps. IPA turning abs like models brittle is actually what gave rise to the "over curing" thing and lead to people curing models for like half the time they should.

Great vid. Not into 3d printing, myself; it seems like a whole new hobby to get into and I just don't have space, time or money for that! Great results though in terms of the lovely models and in the future when my situation allows I'd defo look into it.

You can also double up print time and paint time, especially with skelies. Speed Paints, Contrast Paints, etc. do very nicely on bones.

Awesome! I'm almost finished printing a 3,000 pt Iron hands army on an anycubic photon mono 4k, details and models are emaculate but it's taken nearly 2 weeks :( But hey it's saving me thousands of dollars and as you said in the video, 15 percent or so of your total time is actually spent labouring with your models. Great vid and an awesome new 3d channel to follow!

Printing is certainly quicker as you can be building or even painting while the printer does its job. Also a lot quicker if you printed complete models instead of bits.

The models you end up with are way better. Plus you can make tonnes more if you wanted for basically no cost.

That’s my whole deal with 3D printing, putting models together is not fun for me so pushing print and coming back the next morning to little assembly is awesome

Instead of buying superglue activator you can simply spray Isopropyl Alcohol on one surface, put superglue on the other and it works almost just as well.

Have you considered an enclosure for your printing set up? That room seems like you spend a lot of time in, i just dont want you to be exposed to it too much. I know there is a big debate on the safety measures for resin printing, just looking out for a fellow lover of this awesome hobby.

I only run printers right behind me when I’m filming, I have a dedicated space for them on the other side of the house for ‘normal’ usage. Thanks for looking out for me!

I think the time is irrelevant. The 3D printed army looks SOOO much better than the old GW kits, that alone is worth it.

I would count the printing time as the equivalent of shipping time when ordering miniatures. Other than time of set up, cleaning and curing I would not count it in the time calculation.

How bad does it smell? I have a hard time with micro set for my transfers so think 3d printing might not be for me perhaps

The horses splitting is annoying as hell; I had that happen on my old chariots that I got before Old World dropped as a tester to see if I liked Tomb Kings painting; the horses took a fair bit of glue to get to stick in place AND keep them stuck together.

yes... and no. Because your GW minis are stil worth their $, even after 20 years. In fact, before TOW, they were worth much more. How much can you sell your GW clone mini the day after they are printed ? Not even the price of a STL file... Yes, I know, not everyone buy minis and sell them, but still it says a lot about the actual value, and so the cost, of both official GW minis and their printed clones.

Awesome Vid Mickey!! Editing was really good and I very much enjoyed the content. Quick question how did you get 17 hours when you had two people building for 8 hours? Should that not be 16hrs for when Tom was involved plus the second day of building? If I missed that you doubled the building time with Tom. Then sorry I will watch again 😅

@@HellstormWargaming well I've been building these kits for a long time and I find it tried and tested that batch assembly quickens the time exponentially, and it takes me about the same amount of time to scrape a whole model as it would for me to scrape a couple pieces of it on its own. As for the impersonal aspect of printing, in my experiences when I assemble an army, and I've done a fair few, each character gets its own little personal treatment in the assembly phase they say rank and file has to be as mono posed possible, but it doesn't, and I feel that you can give real character to those individuals in a multi-part kit.... And that's something You do, not the sculptor, not by instruction... You. It's your interpretation of an unassembled Art piece.

Can't even get a rule book. I have always gone with GW sculpts before and I prefer the old stuff to the new stuff (don't want an army with a centerpiece and 100 guys posed like they are taking a selfie for their profile pic). Availability is so bad that I'm already starting to give up on GW models. I didn't make that choice until I realised GW is doing this deliberately.

Printing time doesn't count in the same way that you wouldn't include the delivery time for a box of minis in calculating how long they take to build. The only difference is that you can order as many amazon items at the same time as you like, not being stuck to using one build plate. Also, 3d printing is a bit crap if you're into kitbashing, although getting better over time with both softer resins and more modular stls.

true but you can also digitally kit bash as well before you print. But there is something to be said about doing with your hands and using greenstuff

@@NatesMiniatures yes I've been building some 'scenes' in lychee as I go for bits, especially Tyranids and ork vehicles. I'm also filling in build plates with spare bits when I can. But as much as I print, I do still prefer to work with plastic. I'm just about to move over to abs like resin, although I'm not expecting a big difference.

top tip for printing buy a decent wallpaper scraper thin and to a point it will change your life the free ones are garbage

print time doesnt count, just need to learn to time manage, problem solved put the print on before you go to work/school, come back, clean it all, set another print on, do your usual afternoon / evening things, before you go to bed, second print is finished, clean it, done in a day you can easy print 2 plates of models so yeh, its faster than old world models for sure speaking from experience, building a lot of old Ta'u and Kroot models now, the mould lines are so bad !!!!!

These models were 20 years old. What should amaze you is that those big boxes were sold out in minutes at a fairly high price for their actual value. That's why 3D print is not a thing for GW.

This isn't really a great argument what you lose in time printing you gain with the affordability of the army the uniqueness of the models compared to everybody else the ability to print an unlimited number of troops and quite frankly while you spent 17 hours jerking off to plastic the majority of the time you were printing the models you were doing things like sleeping eating and going to work then you came home and spent a few minutes cleaning it up. In all honesty I wouldn't count the time it took to print the models I would start with how long it took to take them off the build plate wash cure and build them exclusively
