CAN YOU COLLECT A FATHER FISH RESURRECTION JAR IN THE DEAD OF WINTER
In this video I attempt to answer the question, Can you find life in a Father Fish resurrection jar in the dead of winter?
I will journey down to a local ice covered river in an attempt to collect a sample for a resurrection jar without falling through the ice.
Then I will observe the jar for 30 days to see if life will emerge and will take you along for the ride.
Now if your watching this video I’m sure you heard of ‪@FatherFish‬ but if you haven’t and this interests you I highly recommend going to his KZfaq channel and subscribe but also check out the Discord channel I mentioned in this video. If you are currently doing a dirted tank or plan on it or they just interest you this Discord channel is a very important tool. There is so much information within it and lots hobbyists that are very knowledgeable on these subjects that are there to help you if you need it.
If this video interests you check out my previous Resurrection Jar video below and consider hitting that subscribe button and join us in thinking outside the box and stepping back into nature 😁👍

I'm also in Wisconsin and started a jar from a pond a few days ago. I had to use my boot to punch through a sheet of ice to get to the mucky stuff. I didn't have high expectations with these cold temps, but there's so much life. So many detritus worms and copepods! I saw a kid's microscope kit at goodwill for a few bucks and grabbed it. You should try it - the little dudes at the microscopic level are just as fun to watch. I'm loving your videos and I happily subscribed. Keep it up! 💚💛

Welcome and thank you very much! That’s a great idea with the kids microscope kit. I absolutely love collecting these jars. Even if people are uncomfortable pouring them into your tanks you can find certain organisms ( daphnia, scuds, copepods ) that you can remove and culture for food sources. Thank you very much for watching 😁👍

Patty! Health and safety - I assume you had someone with you, good, but next time, especially in winter, use a pole and a scoop please. You seem to have collected a lot of Cyclops, they should multiply in the warmth of your fish room. By contrast I have no snow, and the frogs have already started spawning in my wildlife pond here in southern England, though the micro fauna is pretty sluggish at the moment. I recently collected oak leaves from my wildlife pond and my shrimps spent ages feeding on the microfilm on the brown leaves. Planaria should be quickly gobbled up if sufficiently small. Great stuff, here is a project for you, a nature pond - native fish, native plants, see if you can get spawning.

I was by myself where I collected them was a little of an incline but the water was only about a foot deep compared to the fast moving river. But a pole and a scoop seems a lot smarter now that you said it 😂 Thank you very much and that nature pond does sound interesting. My 100 gallon tub might work for that😁 As always thanks for watching and sharing 😁👍🙏

Hi Patty, I asked this question also about it being winter here and did not know if my ponds here in vermont would be too cold transferring ingredients to a tropical tank. no one answered me but now I know thanks to you! I can't believe warming up did not kill the critters! You explain things so well and are so much fun to listen to and I learned so much. I also really enjoyed seeing you put the resurrection jar into your fish tank. I have not yet set up a tank because I am still nervous. I did not know exactly the process of the jar usage and wondered if i started one what size if I put small fish like guppies in it or a betta. Is this possible to do? Would they just eat what is in the jar so no use of heater or bubbler i am assuming? I appreciate your help.
@pattys_aquatics
@pattys_aquatics 2 ай бұрын
Thank you very much, I enjoy talking about and showing what I’m doing not only to help others but for others with more experience than me to possibly share their experiences and help me as well. So you’re saying you want to put a fish in a resurrection jar? I think that is completely possible. Just would need a fish that can be ok in a smaller space. I would use a gallon jar. And maybe put an inch or so of sand at the bottom. You definitely could put air into it but with that small a space I myself wouldn’t use a heater unless you had to or have some kind of mini nano one. The fish will eat some of the micro organisms and that’s fine I probably would let the jar without fish for awhile though to let the organisms populate. Hope that helps and thank you for watching 😁👍

@@pattys_aquatics Thank you so much Patty. Maybe i should take out the beasties first by letting the jar sit several days like you did and then adding a minnow or couple and try that. i was hoping to not have to use bubbler or heater if possible. would you have a fish recommendation? sorry to bug you
@pattys_aquatics
@pattys_aquatics 2 ай бұрын
@@carmie2431 your not bugging at all I like to help whenever I can. Are we still talking about using the jar itself to house the fish? If we are I think you might need a bubbler unless you have some live plants in it to create oxygen and help with the nitrogen cycle. Honestly this is what I would do and have thought of doing it. Collect a regular resurrection jar from a local water source. Then get say a gallon sized jar, a bigger one and put some sand in it maybe and inch or two and put some live plants in it. Then when the collected jar is ready add it to the bigger jar. You should be able to get away without a bubbler that way. As far as fish that’s a tough one besides a couple male guppies or endlers so they don’t reproduce. I would say a betta but they like warmer water and probably would need a heater depending on where you keep it.
@carmie2431
@carmie2431 2 ай бұрын
@@pattys_aquatics Patty, You are the nicest person willing to help. I am thankful to you. Yes I was thinking of adding guppies or endlers (which i did not know about) maybe two and yes i could see if i can find live pond plants. I remember when I was a young girl of 15 i kept guppies in just a gallon jug bowl and they thrived without any heater or bubbler. what did I know way back 56 year's ago? they even had babies but i just can't remember what i did so long ago. I see what you are saying so start with a smaller jar and then go to a gallon jar adding to a larger jar without a bubbler! wow! I would probably use my well water which goes thru a softener to top it off along with pond water. hope i can get away with not buying fish food. yes for sure on the betta wanting it warmer. thank you for saying that. I am not sure when I will do this but i really want to try soon!! i will continue watching your channel.
