Can you hear the difference between a bass sackbut and a plastic trombone? If you're a violinist or a flute player, I bet NOT! Harp players probably will though...

I would agree. The orchestral tenor seemed to hold its own across all selections, & sounded particularly good playing the high notes in Bolero...but could also be used in jazz. That may also reflect the fact that it's an Edwards. It would be interesting to know what make/model the "Jazz Trombone" is. George, Canada...

@George Schaut that's what I do. I use my orchestral tenor (benge 165f) for all occasions unless I need an extremely bright sound, then I use my jazz tenor (Buffet (don't know the model or age, records of the serial number was destroyed in a fire))

The bass sackbut and the alto suffered a lot (although the sackbut more so), since most of these excerpts aren't really meant for them. The PBone is really just to mess around or teach someone who can't lift a brass peashooter. Between the orchestral tenor (large bore, I presume) and the jazz horn, it depends a bit on the chosen music, as it was pretty close in Bolero, but the orchestral tenor sounded better in general. Overall, I'd rank the orchestral tenor first, with the jazz horn a bit behind. I'd rank the alto after, then the bass sackbut, then finally the PBone.

Honestly, Bolero on a smaller bore horn is probably closer to what Ravel was hearing in his head. Plastic is great for those outdoor gigs on freezing days...but suck otherwise. Love the Bass Sackbut.....would love to hear some typical Bass Sackbut parts on it, conforming to the horn...likewise for the Alto....which sounds great but isn't typical for those pieces.... The Orchestral horn is the one you seem most comfortable on...and sounds the best as a result.

Orchestral tenor, then the jazz horn, alto, pbone and sackbut, in that order. You make the phone sound like trombone-like instrument. I've played an orchestral tenor since college (1979 graduate) and have taken to bass trombone the last 4 years. I'm currently played an independent rotor bass. I would have loved to hear a comparison played with a bass. When I'm playing in band and we get a unison passage above the staff, I who their butts with that big sound! I just found your channel, I liked and subscribed. Great chops!

As a sackbut player (albeit tenor rather than bass), the biggest difference in approach is that with the sackbut, with an historically correct, flat rimmed, shallow mouthpiece, and the small bore size, you have to blow a lot less air through it.

I had read somewhere that if you used a brass mouthpiece in a plastic horn, that this would make the instrument sound less "plastic." Worth a try...One of the trombonists in my town band has an alto horn where the bell & slide are from two different makers. Don't know about a brass/plastic hybrid though...

Stuff like this is why I'm thankful I have studio monitors. Never heard a plastic trombone before; but it's better than I would have imagined. Honestly, for a kid that may not stick with it, that's probably the way to go for a beginning student. The orchestral tenor has SOOOO many more rich overtones than any of the rest. To illustrate the differences more clearly, try some lower registers. Then the bass will likely come into it's own.
@georgeschaut2178
@georgeschaut2178 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps instead of starting your kid out on a $200 plastic trombone, go with an inexpensive $300 used Conn or King student horn instead...or perhaps go with rent to own? The plastic horn has the advantage of being resilient to any dents/damage that a student might throw at it, & it's lightweight. George, Canada...
