Can You Manage Large Setlists in Arrangement View?

Some people think Session View eats Arrangement View’s lunch when it comes to managing massive setlists. I’m going to show you exactly why they’re wrong.
This topic gets people really fired up. And I get it - we’re all used to doing something a certain way and we get comfortable doing it that way.
And when it comes to running tracks on stage with a massive setlist that may need to be quickly reordered, a lot of people seem to think Session View is the obvious choice.
But I’m going to challenge that today and share why Arrangement View - if used correctly - is actually much more ideal for managing a massive setlist than Session View.
All I ask is you just let yourself be open to an alternative option. You’re allowed to still disagree, but it’d be kind of lame to never even give something else a shot. Just saying :)

I’ve been using your tips for YEARS. 40 songs for my band in arrangement view and not a single problem when using your free resources. Really valuable and useful stuff, Will. Thank you for everything.

Hi, love your videos ! Do you know if I can move the played to a marker that are located in a random song in the arrangement view? Maybe with an automation or something? I don’t wanna move my tracks and now that the setlist is changed it will be helpful, I don’t wanna do keymap and I wanna make sure that the session is going automatically

I Play an top40 covers band, what happens when you have request and you have to play them straight away or sometimes you prepare a set but then you get to the venue and the atmosphere is totally different. This is where session view is easy because all songs are listed in alphebetical order and also easier to see the list whilst playing what to play next.

and we play 48 songs which is 4 45mins sets and like I said it changes when on stage so we don't make setlist anymore

I work in the cruise ship industry and am looking for a way to be flexible with a 550 song library. I'll have to test my computers limits!

limiting how many "tracks" you have per song will be crucial to let your computer handle it

I've literally had to play in a corporate band that had several hundred songs. Most corporate gigs these days read the crowd in order to determine what song to play. It is so hard to find songs under this situation in arrangement view. For spontaneous playback, session view is better. I agree with your friend. Lol. The fact that someone created software to to make arrangement view better, tells you that it is not universal in any live setting and that professionals have found a problem that needed to be solved. Also, with the template, it kills the ability for triggers for global tempo. So songs that have a section that holds on a particular note, you can't. Love your work. God bless.

Glad you’ve found something that works for you! All I can encourage you to do is try my techniques and see if they work, if not keep doing what you’re doing. Triggers and sending tempo is 100% possible in arrangement . Also the existence of a solution doesn’t mean the solution is invalid. If so, then follow by Isotonik process session view doesn’t work :) I literally have students running 100’s of songs in arrangement view. My comment was making fun of the guy saying how to manage 800 songs. I always like reminding people, just because you don’t know how to do something or haven’t done it doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

A way one of my bands did it for a while was to use a guitar players helix to select and play each song. Took a while to program but once we had each midi button in it was a breeze to scroll through, select what we wanted, and push play.

Yeah that’s a great solution. The search issue is a non-issue that’s solved by a SETLIST management tool, control via MIDI controller, control via a chart app or other device. Since there’s no “search” in session view either, it’s more of a discussion on what’s best for tracks in my book

Hey Will! Since a long time, I was using a «Stop / Go to next locator» M4L device that is working great, but I was looking for a solution to match the « jump to maker X» in Logic. Seems that you find the workaround!!! One thing though... I tried the trick ( Do a MIDI clip that trigger the locator we want ) and added Delay to be sure the info comes before the auto-stop. What is the delay time you are using? 10 ms seems to be good, but under that, it seems to be a bit sketchy...I'm curious to know you opinion. Thx

Hey Will, I've used your videos and site to learn how to run tracks from the ground up and purchased a few of your tools that are absolutely life changing. I'm only having one issue. I have all of my songs in one master session and I use Ablest to build setlists. I have a few different versions of the same song in my session...for example, if we open with a certain song for one tour, I may have an intro built into that version of the song. And I have a few show intros like that built into different songs. Those intros are just audio files that I made in Logic and imported into my session. They are not warped and my tempo track isn't dragged to manipulate those. I have all of my songs in alphabetical order. So when I build a new song into my session and try to Insert Time..... the timing of those intro tracks get all off. Do you have any idea what I can do to fix that issue?

What if you want to key map to song 10 as there is no "10" key on the keyboard? Is there a key combination where you can enter multiple numbers? Or is there a different way? Thanks for your response!

Hi Will, Do you work on the songs in this master set or do you work on them in a seperate project and drop them in when they are done? What if something has to change? Do you do the change in your master set AND it's own project or do you do it in the song's project and drop it in again?

Always make the change where you are. If I’m on stage using a set I make the change. You always have to manage your songs and files well, so later save as a new arrangement. I show how to do this the most efficient way possible on the site
