4 жыл бұрынCan you use other blades for Evolution Rage 5S plus simple quality tests.
In this video we will check if you can use other than Evolution`s blades with Rage 5S table saw. The Evolution blades come with bore size of 25.4mm which is different from the standard size of 30mm. Therefore you need to use a reducing ring to be able to use other blades. I will cover that in bit more detail in this video as well. I do not recommend using different than original Evolution blades. If you decide to to it then its your own risk and responsibility. Please remember that Evolution saws run at much slower RPM's then other brands.

A belated thanks for all your videos - it was your original review of the Rage5S that helped convince me to go for it. After all your and others' YT videos, fine tuning, tweaks, gadgets like digital level etc I've been really happy with the performance and outputs I get. I run a Saxton 80T blade which I've found to be an improvement over the Evolution wood blade (which itself was better than the multipurpose blade).

I had a 25mm bore blade reamed out by a local machine shop to 25.4mm before any compatible blades or reducing rings were available. Picked up a very fine dewalt blade v cheap on ebay, few quid to ream it, job done, works really nice for years now!

When using a reducing ring, you are correct, they should have a milled edge and be an interference fit. However in addition, you should use a nut to fasten the blade to the saw with a flange larger than the reducing ring outer diameter, in order that it fastens on the blade itself. This will fasten the blade and should the reducing ring work loose, the blade will still be held by the flange and not spin. (The tearout on the Frued blade is due to the lack of RPM on the saw.)

correct. the reducing ring is only to centralize the blade and has nothing to do with the grip on the shaft. the front and rear face plates do all the gripping.

@@MrSnookerballs Same for me. The fastener must be wide enough to hold the blade as well. My circular saw fastener holds the blade so never has a spinning issue.

I used a reducing ring on an Erbauer blade with my Evolution sliding mitre saw. After a few cuts it began to slip dangerously. I would never use reducing rings again. Discovered Saxon blade with the correct bore and it works great. I’m a casual DIY’r. Nothing wrong with original blade though- depends on the job.

I am a long term user of Frued blades. I have used Bosch reducing rings and have never had any issues ever in 46 years of woodworking. As for tooth count, the more teeth the slower the saw will cut. High tooth count is more for crosscutting than ripping however, you can use them for ripping too but do not expect them to cut the way a rip blade does. The less teeth, the rougher the cut. I have never used Saxon blades. I must try one.

Great video. Decided to replace the original Ryobi 40 tooth blade on my table saw with the 60 tooth Freud Pro I purchase over a year ago but not got round to fitting. It cuts through plywood like butter and gives very clean cut. Keep producing the videos

Great review vid. I’ve been running a Saxton blade with reducer (the old versions came with a reducing ring) in my evolution mitre saw for a year is so now. Still going strong with a lovely cut. IMHO the Saxton blade is a Best Buy.

Ditto, first thing i've done with my Evo mitre and table saw is remove the supplied blade and a fit a Saxton Wood blade with reducers..hapy so far. Saving the multi use blades for rougher cuts etc.

Nice job mate. I bought my Evolution rage 5s ready for cutting plywood for cabinets round the house and then Covid shut all my sheet merchants down before I could get out and buy any. This is a great video as it will give me a head start when this thing blows over and we can all get back to normal. Take care!

I can vouch for the Saxton blades, they are awesome. I've been using them exclusively on my chop saw for years and I've just got one for my table saw (Rage 5s). I love them.

I have an evolution flip saw & fitted an 80t Saxton blade. Excellent. I also have a Draper track saw & fitted a 40t Saxton blade. Again excellent. I have the same bandsaw as you, but the Aldi version! Also the 6 way power cube! Top tip for that. Use coloured electrical tape on each end of a power tool cable. So sander has green tape each end, router red etc. That way you can easily see which one to unplug.

Thanks for sharing. I've recently changed the blade in my Hitachi mitre saw. The original blade had some heavy duty, onsite mileage and was beginning to show its age. I opted for the Freud and could not be happier. I now get fast, smooth, clean cuts. I paid £33 at Screwfix. Worth every penny! As I've already mentioned in a previous comment, I'm delighted with the Rage 5s - for £219 on Amazon, it's streets ahead of the competition - but if you're ripping timber or plywood, and want a smooth edge without having to resort to a hand plane, then I'd definitely suggest an upgrade to the blade. Personally, I'll be going for the Freud. Again, thanks for your time and energy on the tutorial. Personally, I liked the beard...Glad you are well!

Thanks mate, just shaved it for this virus it will be back when it all ends. That's a good price for the Freud blade. They can get very expensive. Usually about £40. The 40T Freud is staying in my Rage 5S for now😁👍

very helpful. I have a 20 year old Challenge Pro PP250MS - lost the manual. Got blade out. Marked as 254 x 3.0 x 30T Max speed 5300rpm. Measured the bore at 1", so ordered some Saxton blades. I only need it to cut some decking board and 75 x 75 post. The other blades were more than the cost the original machine! Next day deliver for £5 - hopefully it will all work out fine. Thanks again for posting. Now I can get on cutting some posting :-)

@@CasualDIY the blades turned up less than 24 hours later. At the point I looked more closely at the original B&Q Challenge blade ... darn the 25.4mm is correct like Saxton. BUT there was another reducer ring taking original blade down to 16mm. Swines! There was no interference fit with Saxton. But at the same time the old blade had been working trouble free - plus was blunt. Fitted Saxton. I used the 80 tooth version. Wow - what a smooth cut on decking / 75mm posts. So worked out well. It is like I have a new compound mitre saw :-)

Great Vid, really liked it, Tried the saxton blade pair, initially fantastic, didnt hold for very long though 6 months of DIY use and they were blunting out, installed a freud and it feels like cutting butter, 6 months in its still fresh, twice the price lets see if they last twice as long.

While the reducing ring should be a press fit into the hole in the centre of the blade, the actual clamping mechanism will be pressing on the blade, not the ring. Certainly, I would be worried if the reducing ring was thicker than the centre part of the blade (this 'could' prevent the securing flange from gripping the blade tightly enough), but provided that it is not too loose (which could cause the blade to be clamped 'off-centre') I wouldn't worry about it. The reducer does NOT have to be a tight enough fit to stop the blade slipping: the blade is secured over a wider area than the ring. Very useful video's, I'm finding out new things all the time. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, yes that's true but with the Abracs blade the reducing ring was just falling through. I know that the secure mechanism should clamp the blade but personally I would feel safer having a good quality reducing ring to avoid any potential issues.

@@CasualDIY I have to agree with John on this. Your saw's arbor (without any reducing ring) is usually smooth anyway, as is the bore of the blade. Therefore the "teeth" on any reducing ring won't have any effect. The blade is clamped to the saw's arbor by the flange.

Totally agree. The "bush" is only there to ensure the blade runs concentric. It does not offer any drive at all. The miniscule difference with the bush falling through is not worth talking about, and it will have zero impact on any health and safety concerns.

About the reduce ring, a bit loosen is not that critical, but the thickness is. As long as the reduce ring is slightly thinner than the blade, the blade works just fine.

Hi Tomasz. Enjoyed you video on the different saws. Great info for the potential purchaser. I agree with your choices, did you notice the Freud had a much solider sound, not as tinny when cutting. Two points. (Hope you don't mind, this may help your viewers.) The reducing ring needs to be a good fit inside the saw blade bore and on the machine spindle to ensure your blade is running concentric. If the ring is an excessive sloppy fit the blade will run eccentric causing out of balance vibration. The reducing ring doesn't have any impact on driving the saw blade. The saw is driven by a friction grip between the two collars. Some machines have a pin(s) around the spindle which locate in the saw blade, these are to prevent slipping and usually fitted on the larger production machines.

I'm wondering the reason for the Bosch ring notches. I assume they're there to make the ring stick to the blade, not for better traction during the spinning but for ease of substitution of the blade. I.e. if the ring sticks to the blade, you don't risk to lose it down the saw while changing blades. Which is a definite plus, in my view.

Around Christmas I bought the Rage5S with its "multi" blade and also bought an Evo "wood" blade because of worries about the reducing ring. It WAS expensive and I can confirm its performances are not very satisfying, as in your test (while the "multi" IS fantastic). Said that, in the future I'd substitute the "wood" Evo with a Saxton 40 or a Freud, mainly depending on the prices I'll find (should the Freud prove to be twice as durable, its double cost would result to be on a pair with the Saxton.) @@CasualDIY Solicited by your test, I went to re-watch an old video by a pro, explaining all about saw blades and I found - BTW - a couple info: - Adapter rings are not an issue by themselves. He is a super-pro using top grade tools and putting great attention to both quality of work and safety and he's not afraid at all of using those rings. The only problem is to have them fitting perfectly in the hole (that Abracs blade looks suspect...) - Those "cuts" I noticed on the border of the Freud's blade are a quality feature to make it less prone to overheating. Also, I considered that some of the "roughness" of the multi-material blade by Evolution could be due to its very thin width (2mm), necessary to make it work with metal but also making it prone to vibrations. We can't have our cake and eat it too!

Maybe a little late to the party, but I have the US version of the rage 5S. I was doing a lot of work with hardwood and ditched the Evo multi blade for a Diablo 80T; here's what I noticed (imperial, not metric). The Evo blade has a 1" opening, and this is larger than the shaft. The inner spacer that centers it. My Diablo 10" blade has a 5/8" opening, and this is the exact size of the shaft. If you look at the inner spacer, it is labeled on both sides and is reversible, specifically for 5/8" and 1". So no rings here.

Absolutely brilliant Tomasz as you do exactly what everyone wants to know before they buy another blade. So so helpful. On this video alone, I think most people will be getting the Saxon blades of which I always use on my multi tool. On a different note , can I ask you what you think of, and have you considered,the french cleat system? Prefer without the beard and may I also say, you have a very magnetic personality and I look forward to you videos.

But I'm quite clumsy so the version I will eventually have needs to be lockable so if I knock it accidentally it will not fall off. I've seen few solutions for that but not decided what to use yet. I've been running the freud pro blade in my rage 5s. Outstanding blade. Decent cut quality consistently in all types of wood. The saxton blades I use in my rage mitre saw. However I've recently picked up the saxton Pro series blade. Time will tell how this performs. Great content as ever tomas.

Personally I only use Saxton blades as replacement blades on both my Evolution R255PTS 255mm table saw and also my Evolution R255SMS 255MM sliding mitre saw. The standard evolutions multipurpose blades that some with the saws are great, but I still prefer to use separate Saxton blades depending on what I'm using the blades for, ripping, fine cuts etc etc etc. Anyway, I hope that your move back to Poland is going as planned and that your parents are enjoying seeing their grandkids on a regular basis 😀

If you look at the blade flanges that tighten up on the blade are closer to 40 mm in diameter. So the reducing rings are use only as a centring unit as even a original evolution blade will spin if not righted up

I have been using reducing rings on different blades and saws for over 30 years and I have never had a problem nor heard of anyone ever having problems or safety isues. Dose this saw have a weird monting for the blade as all saws I have ever used clamps the blade nowhere near the bore or the reduction ring? I was considering geting one of these saws but after seeing your cuts it's no where god enugh for fine joinery work that I do.

Good video I’ve just ordered Saxton blades on the on the strength of it. Small point on reducing rings. It is my understanding that the reducing rings are not intended to hold the blade securely to the shaft. It is just there to keep it centralised on the shaft. The shaft flange and nut should still grip the blade and that is what makes the whole thing solid. Cheers

Freud's an Italian professional wood working tool manufacturing company. It used to be known only by the trade but nowadays they cater for hobbyists as well . I have quite a bit of their tooling and used to own one of their 2HP hand routers until it burnt out. Their tooling is well made and not expensive for what you get compared to other makes. www.freud.it

thank you for the review. I bought the freud 40T after your review. But on amazon it was very expensive. Found another in germany. Much cheaper. Overall i am not happy with my evolution tablesaw. As a DIY'er i hope to find a Sawstop style used one.

The reducing rings do nothing but centre the blade, so every tooth cuts equally. The flanges do all the clamping.

Great video (I've just bought a Rage 5-S so it's really handy!) however, on a couple of things I'd like to take issue... Several times you mention that most saws run at 6,000 to 9,000 RPM - not with a 10" blade, they don't! :-) If you look at 255mm blades available, most of them have a max. speed of 5,300 to 5,700 RPM. So although the Evolution is half this, it's not three or four times slower, as you imply. Secondly, the reducing rings only centre the blade - no driving is done by the shaft (how could it, when you just push the blade on by hand - it would have to be shrunk-on to be able to transfer the torque). The drive is done by the flanges clamped by the bolt to the sides of the blade. The issue with a ring not fitting the blade tightly is really down to dropping the darned thing when you're changing the blade, and that the blade may not be held exactly concentric with the shaft. So having done my "grumpy old git" thing, I will finish by saying that I love your videos and I hope you keep making them! (I'll be buying a Saxton 80t blade when I get round to it).

Hi 😁 You are absolutely right on all points raised. One thing that I realised is that on blades says for example the Freud blade, up to 9000 rpm it doesn't state the minimum. So from that perspective I think all the blades will be ok with Evolution saws. I had few emails from people saying they had an issue where the blades slide on the rings. But as you said the blade is secured but the flange thing. But what I have noticed is that the reducing ring may have been thicker than the blade. I found one that was thicker then blades I had in a pack of cheap reducing rings. So emailed those 3 guys and the reducing rings in all occasions were slightly thicker then the blades. So I can imagine the saws blade clamping thing was more clamping pressure on the ring than the blade. What do you think? Thank you for watching my videos 😁

Maybe a silly question but will a dedicated wood blade cut through nails in wood? I intend to buy a table saw sooner or later and if the multi balde is best then I will leave it on the saw.

You can ruin the wood dedicated blade on a nail. Only the multi blade will cope with nails with ease.

Very informative Tomasz. On balance I think I would buy the Saxton 80-tooth blade with 25.4 mm bore. Only unresolved question is the longevity Saxton compared to Freud, so I will watching for your follow-up videos. Most disappointing for me is the performance of the Evolution dedicated wood blade. Do you think the results would read across to the Evolution mitre saw? I bought the R255SMS with the idea of being able to use the blades I buy in either saw. Thanks for sharing.

Yes I was this is my second wood dedicated Evolution blade and had similar results. Not that great. I would imagine the blades will behave similar on the mitre saw but I have not tested that yet. The cross cuts may actually differ on quality for each blade so it will be interesting to see.

Hi Tomasz I just bought the Evolution R255PTS form Screwfix for £200 as compared to the Rage 5S for £350 at most other places, I can't see any difference between the two. Ditched the stand, I kept tripping over it. Also I just bought the Bosch reducing ring for £2.93 on Amazon for my Sip blade and it fell straight through the hole. Further examination reveals that the back of the blade retaining washer is recessed so the blade is clamped further out from the centre bolt. This means that the blade will not spin due to the washer.

The saw seems not to matter as you can use any blade you want ( apart of dado stack ). If you need quality finish then Freud or Trend blades will be great.

How much backlash at the blade tips should there be? Mine seems quite a lot, as a result the start -up is a bit of a bang! Doesn't sound too good. Second point .... the M5 attachment hole for the circle attachment is absent. I can drill and tap it of course.

Thanks for another informative video. Just bought my Rage 5S and I would love to get the Saxton blades but they won't ship to Australia. Is there no problem with the kerf of these blades? The Evolution multi blade is only 2mm and the splitter is sized accordingly.

So, I was going to ask them for another brand. Would there be a problem fitting a Diablo 50t combination blade in the Rage 5S? It comes with a reducing ring too. Love your vids by the way!

I have that blade but only used it on the sliding mitre saw, to be honest I wouldn't feel safe using it on the table saw. You got bit more control over the blade on the sliding mitre saw.

Yes mate, had one of my Subscribers with that issue. So it could be the motor/ table out of alignment. If you email Evolution with the description of the problem they should walk you through how to fix that. They got extended manual with all the details as well. Hope this will help

Thank you for the inspirational video, that almost convinced me to buy this table saw, despite the price of around £ 400. However, I would like to ask, would you consider buying this table saw if you knew, that your only choice of blades are the EVO ones? Here in the Czech Republic the only discs with a 25.4 mm bore that you can buy are EVO.

Hi that depends what will you use the saw. If it will be for general DIY then yes. But if you are planning to do more professional work, cabinets etc. Where cut quality and accuracy needs to be pristine then no.

The problem I have with my rage5s is when cutting,especially if I'm only shaving off a couple of mm, I find the blade flexes, have you had this problem and if so did the new blades stop this. Thanks shaun

The blade flexes? No not had that before. Please be careful as this could be very dangerous. I would try a different blade, maybe yours got slightly bent, or went off alignment. Check if it's all square to the fence, saw table etc.

So, here's an interesting twist. I have a Rage 5S, and had some issues with blade sway. I've been dealing with Evolution customer service and they've going to take it back and inspect it. I sent a video of the sway to them, and in their reply they told me that using non-Evolution blades actually VOIDS the warranty. Just something to be aware of.

the reducer ring is for concentric purposes..your arbor nut contact the blade itself...in short, interference fit is nice but not critical

I’m a beginner and was wondering what is the difference in use between the 40 & 80 tooth blades please? I’m looking at replacing my rage 5s blade for a better one for cutting wood

The blades with 40 and less teeth are used to rough cut wood. More teeth means higher quality of cut, for example the 80 tooth blade would be best for a mitre saw - making cuts cross the grain.

I noticed the arbor washer has a reducer on one side 1” and 5/8” on the other. Have you tried it yet? Also have you found a dado set yet?

Dado stacks are banned in Europe I think. There are few saws that are designed to to take them in Europe but they are like industrial type saws as far as I'm aware. I had the reducing ring from 30mm to 25.4mm and they work just fine.

Who are you and what have you done with Tomasz ? ;) good review, if the Saxton Blades last they seem to be the one to go for, I'd have liked to see a test of the Lidl Parkside/Aldi Ferrex blades alongside as well, I've used the 160mm (I think) Ferrex one in my 165mm Wolf circular saw (not in my Evo's) and it worked absolutely fine and has lasted as long as a 'Quality' branded name tbh, bought it on a whim and due to curiosity as to how well it would work at such a cheap price

I've used a few saxton blades and find they give a good cut and are a decent price, only down side for me was they didn't seem to last too long before losing their sharpness. That might be because I tend to cut mainly MDF but I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me if mdf is actually harder on blades than plywood and if it's worth paying the extra for a Freud blade? All in all a good video, be intresting to see how they pan out long term.

Yes hard to say from my perspective but watch this space. With regards MDF it could be the glue that is used to make MDF that is sticking to the teeth of your blade? That's what I'm expecting that will happen to my blades when cutting a lot of resin blocks and stabilized wood.

I've cut a lot of MDF too and I suspect the glue IS sticking to the blades - as it happens to drill bits too - but I don't know if that actually affects its real sharpness. I've seen several videos by professional woodworkers in which they say plywood is very tough on the blades. Most of them tend to use a different blade for plywood in order not to wear their best blade, keeping it for the quality work.

@@tonyfry4408 The machine will not allow for a dado stack to be put on, shaft too short. Plus in Europe it's more or less banned. Only industrial saws are allowed to use them.

A question I have for you (and the fellow Rage5S community that gather here!) is around upgrading the mitre gauge. The stock gauge has play/slop in my set up and I'd like to go for something more substantial with angle stops but still stay budget end if I can (Rutlands/banggood etc). Given the mitre tracks are not exactly standard on this saw and have the double width in the profile has anybody managed to find a gauge that is compatible and works well with the Rage 5S? I have made a cross cut sled btw but still want a mitre gauge for versatility until I make a sled with greater mitre functionality. Many thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice!

Got the same problem. I actually bought one of Banggood and it did not fit🤪🤣 not found one that would. I added a bit of tape to the original gauge and has no play now but that's not the perfect solution unfortunately

I’m considering trying to work out if I could get a local forge to copy the 5S rail, or use mouldable plastic and then “transfer” the main parts of the 3rd party mitre gauge to the new rail. A lot of scope for error though I guess. Do you think the Banggood could be deconstructed without breaking it??

The adaptor ring is not a health and safety issue. It only centers the blade for installation. I've even 3D printed rings from ABS plastic which have also been fine after thousands of cuts. The flanges are what holds the blade. Granted, the rings do need to be present as there could be a risk of the blade becoming out of center and unbalanced if there was no ring or worst case scenario a plastic ring melted or deformed but even then it would just cause vibration in the blade and not a catastrophic failure.

If the reducing ring is not a tight fit then the blade will not be centered. Operating saw with a blade that is off center in saw that spins it at several thousand RPMS then yes I would say that is very dangerous and in the best case scenario will damage your saw.

TO CHECK THE CUT QUALITY YOU SHOULD USE RATHER SOFT-WOOD BECAUSE THIS IS MORE SENSIBLE IN THE BACKSIDE WHEN CUT. TRY IT AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN.

the reducing bush has nothing to do with driving the blade, so it wont slip if the ring is not a tight fit . all the ring does is hold the blade central while the flange nut is fitted . it is the flange that drives the blade.

The reducing ring keeps the blade centered which is crucial. Try to run a blade at 4000rpm that's off balance

I have commented before on your channel about blades....i purchased a makita track saw 10 years ago had nothing but problems with the blade purchased a new makita blade a finer blade no different really....the point I'm getting to is every power tool I've purchased I've changed straight away to a freud blade what a difference, even my dewalt table saw straight over to freud......look at gosforth handy man he had the same problem................once a year take them out clean the teeth with fairy liquid and hot water coat them in a touch of oil they will last for years..................the maral of the story is buy cheap buy twice

True to a point. However on some occasions you can get a decent blade for reasonable money. For example the Saxton blades are quite good and recently after testing some new blades I found that blades from Trend are also very good (better than Saxton in my opinion) but still bit cheaper than Freud. And yes Freud blades are very good.
