It's Adam Koralik here and today we're discussing the Canadian edition of the Sega Genesis. It's...mostly the same. But it does have a story, and I thought it would be fun to discuss it. You'll likely learn more about the Sega Genesis than you thought. Plus, we'll clean it up!

I have one of the earlier Model 1's. It has the TMSS screen, but it also has the superior YM2612 audio chip, the modem extension port, as well as the "High Definition Graphics" logo on the top. I'm from the East Coast, but I found this model like 5 years ago at a shop while on vacation in California. When I was taking it back home through LAX, the TSA agent stopped me and was like: "Is that a Genesis?" I nodded my head sheepishly, and he got excited saying how he grew up with a 2600 and it was just a wholesome experience forever tied to this console that I own.

You can tell if the console has TMSS just by looking at the FCC ID sticker (that is, if the shell hasn't been swapped by someone). FJ8=TMSS and FJ46E=no TMSS. The box art for the Canadian Genesis 1 is actually different than the US version. It looks more like the European version's box. I would only use 90% or higher rubbing alcohol to clean electronics. Any other type of liquid will have a higher percentage of water which will cause corrosion over time.

You should never use Windex on electrics because it leaves a soupy firm on them which could cause them to get dirty faster or damage them. Use only IPA. It will not leave anything or I prefer to use Deoxit D5 contact cleaner. Never use Windex on a TV screen as it can damage flatscreen TVs too. Windex should only be used on windows.

Sorry if I am a bit picky about this, but I wouldnt say that the Mega Drive sold very poorly in Japan. By 1995 it had sold 3.5 million units over there. Yes for sure it lost to the 16 million Super Famicom units sold by that same year. But, after the PC Engine, the Mega Drive was the third most sold console in Japan. The fact that the MD mini had recently a sequel, initially planned only for Japan, is further proof that the MD in Japan was and is a popular console. To put things in prospective, the Sega Saturn, super popular in Japan, sold 5.7 million units over there, it is not a huge leap from the Mega Drive.

Interesting. This Canadian Edition was the one I had as a Canadian kid. I have it and another one still and they both have the port and say high def graphics, the two shades of grey. I dont think I remember them having the starting text at all either. But they both dont have the silver sticker on the bottom for some reason even though they were bought in western ontario and never opened. I find the model one way cooler then the model 2.

There are few stickers as vexing with the residue as Value Village ones, I swear. Used to also be a really good place to pick up an assortment of retro game goods back in the day, used to come across a lot of 8- and 16-bit era stuff with your standard NES, Genesis and SNES stuff and occasionally really oddball stuff like PC Engine games, import system stuff, etc.

I just agree with this statement regarding Skies of Arcadia, the encounter rate of the Dreamcast release is awful, the game is way more enjoyable on the GameCube, but for example, Sonic Adventure DX is awful compared to the Dreamcast release, it introduces a lot of bugs that werent there in the first place (SA2 is mostly the same but with some multiplayer modes added which I dont think it is worth it and the added Chao content is good but I think the VMU interaction is better. You can play fine without a GBA but I dont like that much having to buy a GBA, a copy of a Sonic game on the GBA and link cable alongside the gamecube console and SA2)

As a Canadian and someone who's had so many Genesis'i? I have never seen that sticker before. I've had at least half a dozen and never seen it and also did cleanings. Looks like a sticker that would have been put there by a third party reseller (ie. like some game store that sold pre-owned consoles). There is also a slim chance that the console may have been a Blockbuster rental console, as that would have also been put there by them to prevent customer tampering. Just my guesses. Again, i've NEVER seen that sticker on any genesis i've ever had or seen in the wild in Canada. Oh and also i've had ONE TMSS free genesis.

I have to have a security sticker on my phone to show that I did not steal it from work. On my last phone, the Pixel 6 pro, it would got hot enough so that the sticker would move around but the "void" didn't come out. It slid out of position over time. So I decided to slide it (with my fingers and some patience) back to its original position when the phone was hot enough. So what I am getting at is maybe try to heat the area (blow dryer?) where the sticker is and slide it to another position. Perhaps you may want to practice with another security sticker to see the effect before attempting the real thing.
