I do not consider sixteen year olds being little children.

They also call two or three year Olds 'babies' 🤔 My kids were no longer considered babies as soon as they could walk. Which was around the age of 12-14 months.

Yeah, kidnapping rates are different, but realistically your kids are safer out on the sidewalk than at home since most kidnappings are done by immediate family members as part of a custody dispute. Opportunistic kidnappings are not a thing to worry about in the same way that getting hit by lightning twice isn't a thing you need to worry about.

The best way to get your baby, child or yourself resistent to colds: a warm body breathing fresh cold air.

Micro managing?! I didn't know that term, had to google it. So i learned something new. Thanks for that. I think i like that "helicopter parents" picture more, because it illustrates more accurate how ridiculous it is, how some parents interpretate their role. Even here in germany nowadays. Although i know, as a father of two kids, how hard it is to let your children go and let them make their own faults. But thinking about the negative effects on them being over-controlled helps with that - and gives you the priceless experience to be so proud of them, when they managed things on their own for the first time. It always makes me happy to see them being so proud of themselves.

You have a way better sleep when it is cold. The reason is that you get more oxygen in your lungs. Cold air holds more oxygen. Here in Denmark, you can see babies sleep outside, even when it is frost. And you might find strollers outside the cafés here too. My dad told me, when he was a kid, him and all he's siblings slept in the attic, and when it was winter, there were snow on the duvet in the morning. It was in the 30s and the 40s. He is now 90 years old.

16 year olds aren't considered little children in Germany. They are adolescents and already have the right to vote in communal elections (county level).

They're not grown up either. The brain is finished developing between the age of 23 and 26. Let's say 25. That should be the minimum age to vote.

Yes, from my european aka German perspective it looks weird how people imprison/isolate their kids, even using dog leash and then the helicopting thing. But if I take a closer look at the circumstances, like cultural differences, crime, car-centric, less walkable and safety or just too far away for kids to go or bike to school and home, lack of public transportation, more strict separation of residential area from trade area and/or public administration and more. It's not that simple like in the first glance.

I’m Swiss. My children also slept outside in strollers while I was in a small shop or the bank etc. for the same reason. Not wanting to undress and wake them. It’s not anecdotal I think. I would not leave them outside that long but know people do this all the time.

When it comes to kids in bars: I think it depends on what type of bar we are talking about. Most people wouldn't bring their kids to places where people get totally drunk. But at more civilized places where not everybody drinks alcohol and people don't really get drunk this probably would not be considered a problem here.

For the stroller thing, I have never knowingly seen that but I live in NRW (North/West) and she lives (or used to live?) in Bavaria, so maybe that's why. But the main thing that people in the US are more afraid of kidnappings than people elsewhere and indeed than their own parents in the 90s is that while crime rates have in fact gone down, news coverage of kidnappings has gone up. People feel less safe even though they are safer than before.

Oh completely. It does happen. We have a thing called an "amber alert" here where a mass media alert is sent out when a child is kidnapped, but it is usually a family member or close friend who is the suspect.

Bringing kids to a place that serves alcohol is no problem for the servers, because the duty to watch the child is on the parents. And alcohol consumption age 14 and up, for beer and wine, is on the parent's discretion as well. We do not turn alcohol into this mysterious wonder, that only grown ups are allowed to acknowledge, so the draw is not as strong once they are allowed to legally drink. And as to the raw veggies, they are always present at a kindergarten's meals (ar at least should be), since they are not only healthy due to vitamins and raw fibre etc, the action of chewing them strengthens the mouth's musculature and helps the kids to articulate better.

That story with the baby in the stroller was not anecdotal. That's completely normal here (I live in a 100.000+ town in Bavaria). Also, 15-20 minutes for a coffee? Dude, I'd say they were easily aiming for an hour or so. Why would they be in such a rush? 😅

I think that really depends on where you live. I know places where this is totally safe and others where I wouldn't do this. And of cause only if I could see the stroller.

I don't wanna say that this lady isn't telling the truth. But I am a German and I never made any experiences with those mothers who left their babies ouside the Cafes or Restaurants. Nowadays, you wouldn't even leave your dog waiting alone outside the supermarket while you go shopping, let alone your own child. I think she unforutnately met some mothers who are doing this. But this is defintely not a typical German way of handling with ya babies.

She "unfortunately met some mothers who do that"? 🤨 Well I did that. Regularly. All the mothers I know had no problem with that. Even the daycare Nanny would leave the kids outside the daycare as long as they were sleeping.
