Have had my 102 for well over 40 years... (In fact, the sheath on mine has a full flap instead of the handle"loop").. still a great knife

Mine's also over 40 years old. I bought it from the Ship's Store when I was in the US Navy. That was pretty weird, because I couldn't carry it onboard. It has the same sheath as yours, which I definitely prefer to the new handle loops..

I'm not into knives but I have this exact model. A friend gave it to me. I love this knife. I use it fishing and camping. Mostly I use it while trucking and cooking/eating meals on the road. Perfect size, holds an edge well and I'm unskilled at sharpening. 9/10 would just like another 10-15mm of blade length.

Thank you for this review. I have a Buck 102 I purchased as a teenager in the early to mid 1960's. Has been on many hunting, fishing and camping trips. Not just for small game as I have used it with excellent results field dressing whitetails. My blade is worn from being sharpened over the years but I am confident it will last the remainder of my time here on earth. Wish all companies had quality and pride of workmanship as Buck.

I am very happy with Buck's fixed blades too. I am not so happy with the budget Buck folders that are out there, or at least the ones that are here in Canada. Somehow our biggest hardware/sportswear store here in Canada made a deal with Buck to have modern style folding knives sold here. Sadly most of them are very low quality. :( But fixed blades. They simply have the best fixed blade outdoorsman knives that are made for the regular guy here in North America.

I've always loved the Buck 119. That being said, I love the Buck 102 because I think it the 119s perfect companion piece and a great first fixed blade knife for any child, especially if you carry a Buck 119 when hunting or fishing. Most kids I know wanna be just like their dad in almost everything so the Buck 102 is absolutely perfect for that purpose.

I absolutely love my 102! I have around 100 knives. Usually always carry a pocket knife. But you would never ever see me without my 102. Unless I'm heading to the woods to test out other knives. And even then I still usually end up leaving it on my belt and throwing the rest in a backpack. Only thing this little knife can't do is chop. Because of its small size and light weight. I totally agree with you. Great video bud. It is very underrated.

That is pretty high praise for the 102. You are absolutely right there is very little that the 102 cannot do. I assume you have it with 420HC. Would you prefer the Heritage version with D2 or the Pro version with S25VN over the 420HC?
@adamboylan2307
@adamboylan2307 Жыл бұрын
@@CanadianCuttingEdge yes. I give it high praise. I really think it deserves it. Mine is in 420hc. I do all my own sharpening. And I actually prefer it. I have other blades in d2. But I really don't like the trade off. I find I have to use a lot more effort to sharpen it and the edge lasts a bit longer. But with bucks 420hc. It doesn't stay sharp as long. But with little effort, I got that thing shaving again. I don't baby my knives either. I use them as tools. I'm afraid if my 102 was made of d2 it would have broken already. Because it's also a bit brittle. As for s35vn. It's most likely a good bit more expensive. I hear it's a really good steel. But I'm pretty rough on my knives. And I hate to have to worry about breaking an expensive blade. I don't have any extra money to throw away. And the 102 in 420hc has taken everything that I've thrown at it, and is still holding on strong. So I really have no reason to change anything about it. But I'm like you Dennis. Only thing I'd change is the blade height. 3/4 inch instead of 5/8. Hope I got your name right. I'm not good with names.

Have this 102, a 115, and the 119, all with the black Micarta handles. Great knives. However, I find the Micarta handle to be the proverbial "slicker than snot" once blood gets on it. Actually somewhat dangerous. I have the 102 size with s rubberized handle which is great....zero slip. There are many great knives, but none beat Buck. Company is great and fantastic Customer Service. And, the Buck family has strong Christian values.

Thanks for watching Pro 2A. These BUCK knives are made rather well, and yes the Phenolic handles can be a little slick for many people. My hands tend to be able to grip them fairly well. I don't know if is something about certain people's skin or not, but I agree, there are enough people who find it too slick when it gets wet but I doubt BUCK will change the handle material anytime soon. In case someone reading this is confused: Phenolic plastics and Micarta materials use the same resin base, but in the end they are different materials. That resin base can most certainly make handles slick.

I've been using my little Buck woodsman since the early 70's. I go canoe camping and kayak camping so things sometimes get wet. I used some course sandpaper to rough up the Buck handle and its now a great wet grip. Just rough up the polish, it changes everything.

My favorite knife for hunting and fishing trips. No telling how many fish, rabbits, squirrel, deer, pigs, doves, quail, ducks, geese and probably other things I'm not remembering at the moment I've cleaned with it. It works pretty well as a camp knife too as long as you don't go trying to baton it, that's what a hatchet or a small forest axe is for, I doubt I'll ever find a truly compelling reason to sell it or "upgrade" from it, also have 110 and 112 folders, a 119 and a 124 that are fun to use on occasion, but if I'm going hunting or fishing, it's a 102 that will be getting chosen, first time every time

Thanks for liking the video but I had to disagree with your comment about Buck steel choices. There are many MUCH better steels than Buck's 420HC, but Buck does a better job with their 420HC than anyone else - I will readily agree to that. Lately Buck is starting to make special versions of many of their knives with premium level steel as well as their 420HC, so they are learning that consumers want better performing steels. It is unfortunate that the prices of knives made in USA and Canada cost so much more these days but labour prices keep going higher and that drives manufacturing prices up.

The 102 is a great companion knife with a reasonable size for everyday stuff and attracts less concerning eyes from the public than say the 119 or 120. Oddly, the Buck 110 and 112 seem to attract more caution from Law Enforcement in the British Columbian community. But I think that has to do with some people thinking they are gravity knives. In regards to steels pre-1988 Buck used 440 ( not sure if it was 440A or 440C). I will agree that 420HC is a good steel overall. I do wish that Buck would bring back the flapped sheath but that is just a preference thing. As for Warranty Buck does have an awesome warranty program but so too does Kershaw. I say this as I have contacted Kershaw about broken parts and they have shipped me the parts very quickly (less than the week) (I used to work at a House of Knives and built up a name for myself by doing instore repairs) I have to replace my 102 as it was somehow lost last fall during a hunting trip. I am thinking of ordering the Pro series model of 102 from Cabelas.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Brian. The steels that are called 440 and 440A are the exact same steel, but then there is also 440B and 440C, I strongly suspect they used 440 before 1988. Thankfully these days you they make special runs of almost all their knives with high end steels (like the S35VN variant you are looking at) which offers more options - to those who don't mind spending a little extra money. (and you get a nicer handle too).The other great thing about sheaths for Buck knives is the wide variety of sheaths made by small leather-working companies, so you should be able to find someone who makes exactly what you are looking for, but it might take some time to find it online. I hope one drops in your lap on Father's Day (if you're a father), but if it doesn't, you know where to find it.

I think a lot of people who get the 102 end up saying that it is a bit smaller than they had hoped. I should have said that in the video.

Just a day or two before I saw this I took advantage of Buck's cyber sale and bought a 110LT. (It arrived in Vancouver in two days! - I wonder if/when the Jin01 from GB will ever arrive!). I already had the Kershaw copy of the traditional 110 but wanted something lighter. The LT is very much that! BTW I do not believe CdnTire is clearing Bucks, but they are frequently on sale. Every store seems to make their own stocking decisions, I was told. Inventory varies widely in different Vancouver stores.

I still have stuff waiting from stores in Asia and Europe. I think Canada Post is processing stuff from outside of North America LAST and with the other unions still blocking some Canada Post distribution sites it might take well into 2019 before all the backlog of the mail gets sorted out. Not to mention the problems with CBSA stealing our knives.

Yes, each Owner / General Manager at each Canadian Tire store decided what products they want to carry. That is why some stores have a GREAT selection of knives and others have very little. At my local store they used to have two cabinets of knives, now they have only one. Hardly anything in stock. :(

You can still find Buck knives at some CT stores. in my town they have removed 3/4 of the knife stock they used to carry 5 years ago. But most of the BUCK knives at CT are made just for CT and they are quit a bit lower quality than most BUCK knives, and you cannot find those models on the BUCK website, only at CT

Less of a fascination, more of a “It’s easy for smaller things to just use my knife” type thing. I use a knife to make kindling and small feed pieces for fire. To actually make larger fires, I would definitely use an axe but for something small and contained inside a shelter I build, it just use my knife to baton out smaller pieces

Well, in that case you need one of the even larger BUCK knives maybe the 102 or even the 124... but then you also get longer blades too. I get it, its hard to find a knife with a nice short blade and still provides a nice XL handle. I am lucky, my hands are just on the threshold of XL.

Or a froe. I agree in principle, but as a reviewer I know that MANY people will baton with their fixed blades and they want to know if the knife can handle it. Personally, I have never batoned wood except for reviews, but I would never tell anyone that they can't baton - if it's their knife they can do with it what they want.

I didn't force you to do anything. You must have no self control if you believe I forced you to watch anything. click away. it's really that simple. You watch what YOU choose to watch, so go tell yourself off instead for wasting your time typing a meaningless comment. Have you ever gone to a movie? or watched TV? Even after paying to watch they still put advertisements in your face. Why? Because it costs money to create and provide content. So stop being a baby stop whining about advertising, its not going away anytime soon, grow up and deal with it. I am not sorry that there are advertisements on FREE KZfaq. You have got to be very naïve if you think I will change the way I do my videos based on a comments of someone who doesn't even support the channel. No ads = no channel, just like with 99% of the channels on KZfaq.
