Got to admit it. My grandpa in Mindanao own a Spanish Mauser which is a family treasure when the Spanish arrived in the Philippines he was a rebel fighting of the Spaniards when the Spanish introduced the Mauser rifles to the Philippines he was lucky enough to get one from dead Spanish soldiers which he kept treasured and passed on to our generation

Yes but the ammunition box that carry the original rounds where soaked by water and some may not fire because it was stored for to long cause the bullets to rust

The box is wooden.. So expect the ammo quality not good but the rifle is in good shape my grandpa loved it he always keep it clean everyday when his still alive

My father is the holder of it unfortunately he used it in the mountains of Sulu and northeastern Mindanao command his a soldier by the way. I don't know where he found bullets that works. Probably he used the good ones then reused it

Some 1893/33 rifles still saw service in the Korean War under the Turkish brigade. There's a photo of them still using their WW1-era German mauser webbing. They had the bonus of using enemy 8mm ammunition from the Chinese. One commander was even a Gallipoli veteran.

They showed up with their Mausers but were quickly issued M1 Garands and taken into the US supply system as they were attached to the US 25th Division.

@@GeneralJackRipper Bad lubricants + cold weather? That and rifle grenades are pretty much the only disadvantages the M1 Garand has to a 1893 Mauser.

@@GeneralJackRipper The M1 did have a grenade attachment, but since it didn't have an adjustable/automatic gas system and bullet trap rifle grenades didn't exist at the time, you had to put a blank round in the chamber, and doing so with the en-bloc system is tricky. In a Mauser you just open up the action, jam the blank in the magazine and close. As for the PING, nobody really hears it in combat, and even if they did your buddies are still firing anyway, so it's not like the enemy can actually take advantage.

I know it's not rare, but my 8mm converted Turk 1893 gets run hard and it's been an absolute champ. Even handles hot ammo like a champ. No signs of lug setback or anything.

I personally can't wait until you get out of the restrains of ww1. I love what you guys have done so far, and I'm still very excited for everything coming for ww1, but I believe your videos will be improved once you don't have to worry about staying within the scope of the first world war (such as covering the BAR but restricting yourselves to the original version). I'd love to see some second wold war content obviously, but even older episodes like the Dreyse or from neutral powers like the swiss guns would be some excellent content.

34:51 I can confirm as a person who has read about the Gallipoli Front in WW1. Some landing attempts in the peninsula failed due to well-positioned Ottoman soldiers, also Ottomans were in the upper hand in terms of snipers at that front, according to the resources. A certain Sergeant Yahya managed to hold off a landing conducted by the ship HMS Lord Nelson by only himself and his 67 men, for 32 hours, until every single soldier in this small unit is either dead or wounded, including the sergeant himself. The British landing force consisted of about 3,000 troops.

I have a 1893 Turkish Mauser that has been converted to 8mm given the new sight and hole through the stock and magazines cutoff switch cut off and the block still there but is straight wristed. Love the gun cause its super smooth shoots light and is just a joy to shoot plus ive hit 650m with it

An old teacher I had had the great definition of the term "Expert". X is the algebraic expression for an unknown. A spurt is a drip under pressure, Thus an Xpert is an unknown drip under pressure. Actually, i don't know of anyone with a better understanding of great war arms then Othais. Thanks for another great episode.

This is a little late, but I've read in David Stone's The Kaiser's Army that the Mauser 98 can fire up to 30 rounds a minute. It is no surprise the Ottoman soldiers were able to put a high volume of fire into British/ANZAC lines. This this also shows how well trained they were.

Hmm.... I never realized it. A lever action is easier to check the loading area and bullet as you cycle. You don't have the bolt blocking the eye sight to inspect it.

Question: You stated extractor was not 'snap over' yet you were dropping round into feed way and bolt readily closed. Question 2: I know this is post WW1, but many of these upgraded to 7.92x57mm (as well as the Commission 88)are these safe to shoot the 7.92 round? BTW: Ian did a piece on some very hot Turkish 8mm, that damaged self loaders. Should this be avoided in those Turkish bolt guns?

Model 1893 7.65mm, Model 1893/05 still 7.65mm loss of magazine cutoff switch, Model 1893/33 same as the 1905 upgrade but change to 8mm Mauser barrel and different rear sight.

Two things: At the time of WWI Istanbul was known as Constantinople. Is Mae wearing a wedding ring?

Not really, Istanbul was Istanbul after the occupation in 1453. At least that's how it was known nationwide in Ottoman Empire anyway.

Concerning your comments on the magazine cutoff. I suspect this was connected to the US rifle trials of 1892 as at least one of the US prototypes had a magazine cutoff and used the rimless 7.65 cartridge.

The mag cutoff was ordered at the behest of the German delegation, most notably Liman Von Sanders, who thought the Ottomans could do with accuracy.

Had this rifle been available for the US trials of 1892, I firmly believe the US would've adopted it over the Krag. The magazine cut-off had been developed for the US trials on the the 1889-92 style prototypes. Mausers prototypes #'s 3 and 5 had two different types of magazine cut-offs on their single stack magazines, with the #3 rifle having functional problems, and #5 functioning adequately allowing that rifle make it to the final round of evaluations. It seems likely to me that the 1893's cut-off was an offshoot of that development.

So which was the trigger Mae found most unpleasant ? She is going to be one of the very few people,period,much less with contemporary people,to have experience with this many different rifles. Julian Hatcher and Elmer Keith are long gone. Who else would have this experience ?

I own one of these rifles. a reproduction magazine cutoff was added to the rifle. Overtime the repro cutoff lever began to not work and once it received the gun the repro lever was barely pushing down the follower. Is there anyway to get an original magazine cutoff lever? Or is it too rare to find one?

The Turks stopped using the cutoff in the 1893/05 upgrade So there really isn't very many originals out there. The straight 1893's that were not upgraded that are out there were probably captured examples.

I've read a lot of back and forth arguments regarding the safety and strength of the small ring Mauser actions. I understand that a lot of this pertains to rifles converted to higher pressure NATO ammunition. Were there any concerns about testing this example? Edit: I should have saved my question for after watching the entirety of the video before asking this.
