I'm out and about in the woods around One Tree Hill near Sevenoaks in Kent with my dog Barney .
This is a first outing with my GoPro Hero 7 Black which I'm hoping will help to keep the bulk and weight down when doing these photo walk-type vlogs.
I'm using my Canon New F1 35mm film camera with three lenses - 28mm, 50mm and 135mm.
I found the GoPro simple to use and was able to clip it on to fences and branches to keep it up off the ground. It will take a while to figure out the best settings. Here, I used in in 2.7K linear mode to help with the notorious bendy horizons that is familiar with GoPro footage.
I even managed to film in time-lapse mode when I didn't mean to but it all part of the learning experience.
Recently, I've been using a DSLR camera and a macro lens to 'scan' my 35mm film on a lightbox and have started using Negative Lab Pro software for the RAW conversions in LR. It seems to work well. It's quicker than scanning on my film scanner and I can get a big file start off with and working in RAW has it's advantages.

I see some comments here regarding the camera. I own a good serie of Canon cameras that I love, T90, F1-New, F1 (the first one), A1, AE1, FT-QL, FTb-QL, all great cameras. Used them all over the years, none of them let me down. Said that, a camera is just a black box, as soon as the body is 100% light sealed, shutter speed accurate,the quality of the picture will depend more on the photographer's eye ( composition, good exposure), and the quality of the lens you are using, the location, the weather conditions and most importantly the quality of the light. Any camera body, independently of the brand should give the same results if the above conditions are optimum. Craig, love your method of determining the compensation for each filter, and not rely on the manufacturer's data, but need to be quick, because sometimes light can change rapidly between the two readings, with and without filter, and the meter oriented the same way. A 1/2 stops error can ruin your exposure if you use slide film, like Velvia 🤔 (does such thing exist anymore??).

Hi Craig. Some nice shots. The GoPro seemed to work well and must make life a lot easier! You did say this was partly a recce and you'd come back another time with the large format, but what came across to me was how much medium and especially large format improve the impact of images like these compared to 35mm. Barney is a star!

Craig, could you, please provide me with the exact type of the FD lenses you used (28, 50, and 135mm), Canon has different types of each focal length (example: 50mm F2.8, 1.4, SC, SSC, L type, etc..). As always, interesting to watch you at work - and the results of course! I just bought myself a GoPro 7 as it's getting good reviews, and was pleased to see the 2.7k mode video looks good. I was going to stick with 1080, but 2.7k will give room to crop if necessary, so will leave that as my default. I think the superwide mode is more suited to genuine action, it does add some sort of excitement to the video. Happy new year to you, Craig.
@CraigPrentisPhoto

Yes, there would be a bit of room to crop in to 2.7K as I usually export in 1080. Not sure I'll be needing the superwide action mode at my leisurely pace! Happy New Year Neil.

Nicely done Craig and Happy New Year. I think GoPro's get a bad press unfairly. Filming quality looked fine to me . Amazing capabilities given the sensor size etc. I use my GP5 for a few fill in shots and they work really well when doing "in car or travel' shots and bullet proof in bad weather (I used on my Mountain Hare video in the Cairngorms in blizzards and driving rain and underwater !!) I've generally stuck to 1080 and Med format as that seems to avoid the distortion as well as linear and saves card space. I've found batteries are also c.15-20 mins but in cold weather that drops so always keep in my pocket. That F1 was a real tank and top end tech at it's release and a great camera. Good memories of Ilford HP5 (preferred it to Kodak Tri-X but can't remember why !!) . . Used to use on my sports photography and push it to 800 or even 1600 sometimes . You do realise anyone under about 40 will be scratching their heads and saying "what's holding back the ASA?..red filters?..eh??...".. :-) . :-) . I'm with you on the portability and I think if that allows you to enjoy the day and concentrate on the images it can only be a good thing. Great to see your subscribers growing nicely...there's a big market I think for vlogs without people constantly making coffee in them !!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nigel and Happy New Year to you too. Yes I think the GoPro will come in handy as it significantly lightens my load and seems to do a good job. Will have to have play and find what works for me with the settings/storage/batteries etc. Anything to make the process of producing these vlogs easier has to be welcomed. As you know, they are incredibly time consuming but that's our choice and I'm pleased there are a few people getting to see them now. Yes, I've found HP5 to be an excellent film over the years and you're right, it pushes well too. Haha, yes, showing our age with ASA! Cheers.

What lovely images you got there. Coloured filters make a heap of difference when shooting landscape that’s for sure. For the GoPro thing. Personally I film all my photography videos with the GoPro because it is,as you say, extremely convenient and easy. After a while you also learn how to compose quite good frames with it, and I find the quality to be splendid. But, the curvature can sometimes be a bit off-putting. It was interesting to see the comparison between the filters. I liked the images you managed to capture in the woodland and the go pro footage looked nice and clear. Thanks Teddy. I've had my Canon F1N for over 20 years now and although it got very little use when the digital changeover happened, I'm really glad I didn't sell it as it's a great little camera. I sometimes use the lenses on my digital cameras with a cheap adapter too as they are lovely to film with and the manual focussing is so much nicer than the modern fly-by-wire lenses.

Take 2: Have just purchased a GP7 Black so was interested to see how it looked on a vlog - was the sound recorded independently as I saw you had a lav mic on? Not used it outside yet but playing about the house I think the 2.7k linear mode would be what I would use too. Interesting idea the photowalk. On the 1st watch I was thinking gosh, that HP5 looks almost grainless in the images - bt when I watched the 2nd time it was there as it should have been. Nice to see you going right through the filters to show us a comparison, the green looked like the original with no filter & of the chart images together I was leaning towards the look of the red filter I think. That apart I think my fave was the opening shot of the backlit tree . Good to see you back out filming again.... PS Barney's tail does not stop - what a happy dog he is.
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there's a nice bit of grain there. I've got so used to seeing clean digital shots and even very low grain with the larger format film stuff I do. It's quite nice to see a bit of 35mm grain. The GoPro worked OK. Love its portability and I didn't have to do anything in post once it was set up. Still recording to an external mic though. I think it's essential if you're moving away from the GoPro at any length as it just doesn't pick up. I think I'm going to do something again on the b&w filters as there's a lot of scope for experimentation there. And thanks, I love having Barney along on these trips out.

By the way what wireless mic are you using? I really like how you compared the different black and white contrast filters, I was thinking of doing a video like that. It would also be cool to see the effects of a polarizer in the mix as well with the black and white. Oh yea I love you F1N, I’ve got a Canon A-1 which was my first camera but it just sits there. Nice work Craig. I think the gopro works. I'm not a fan of the "gopro look" either so haven't used it for more than a couple of shots within my vlogs yet, but yours looks ok. I had a thought - a possible idea for a video - you're using film cameras and also old lenses. I've been looking at old lenses with a view to achieving a film-style look on a modern camera. I wonder what a photo shot with a film camera and old lens would look like in comparison with a digital camera and the same lens. Anyway, i digress. nice work, good to see you back.

Hi Jeff, that's a good idea. I do sometimes use the old manual lenses on my digital cameras with cheap adapters. I much prefer these older lenses for their manual focus rings. They generally have a much nicer 'feel' to them, with definite hard stops and repeatable focus throughs.

I don't think you can go wrong with either of those. 50mm's can be picked up fairly cheaply, especially the f1.7/f1.8. Also try the Helios 44 58-2 as it has the legendary swirly bokeh look and this does also translate to being used on a digital body with a M42 cheap adapter. I've got a few 50mm lenses so a comparison video might be on the cards.

While I enjoy good b-roll, I'm more concerned with content than cinematic production. I wasn't at all bothered by the GoPro footage, especially since it involved content. If it makes it easier for you to get out and vlog and that I'm not the only one who doesn't mind that style, I'd say to go with it.

Thanks John, I try to make the vlogs look as good as they can but you're right in that most people just want to see good content.

Just bought a Hasselblad 500cm with 80mm lens. Was going to get a Toyo but I thought carrying it around when travelling will be too much. Any thoughts on the Hasselblad? Thanks, Dominique@@CraigPrentisPhoto

Ahh nice. Unfortunately, it's a camera system I've not used before. Let me know how you get on once you've stuck a couple of rolls through.

I thought the Go- Pro worked perfectly. I was surprised you could walk with little camera shake.

You didn't take any shots of that cute dog. It was literally posing for you.
