This week, I'm in South Oxfordshire on a private estate visiting a friend who manages the area. I'm using my 4x5 large format camera to photograph a couple of the neglected parts and in particular, a couple of old doors which are overgrown with foliage.
As ever, my dog Barney has come along too.

Lovely shots, perfect for a large format camera. I used to live on a run down Victorian castle estate, before I had really taken to photography. I was more interested in getting the orchard back up and running to make cider. I rue the missed opportunities for arty shots but still have a lot of very special photo's of my kids in the grounds when they were young.

Marvelous. I am still discovering these videos which are amazingly educational. As a recent 4x5 shooter, gaining insight into composition, exposure, and film choice is really useful. You had a good eye (of course) but walking us through the process is invaluable. Also, one can wonder about the history and beauty of this place in its prime. In the US we have remnants of this in our west.

Yes, it's a shame because this walled garden and this fabulous greenhouse would have been would have been highly productive in their prime. They have been left and uncared for many years now but this gives it a neglected charm.

I enjoyed your video Craig, thank you. I generally lean towards black and while, hwver, I was quite taken by the colour version of the door in the greenhouse, lovely.

Your videos are such a refreshing change. Although I'm a digital shooter i try to work in the same manner on occasions.ie tripod, shutter release, taking time and only a couple of photographs. I have also spent time taking many photographs of old doors! Great stuff, thank you Craig

Enjoyed the photography Craig. I was thinking I would have liked the black & white better, but when comparing against the color I ended up preferring the color separation of the leaves from the door at 9:23. Peace!

Thank you for the inspiration and confidence you videos are giving me. I am starting to make use of a MPP Press Camera which predates yours by a number of years. Does not have the swivel film holder or rear adjustments you have but does have a rear focal plane shutter which is best not used due to age. I also don't have a side swivel on the front frame but do have rising lensmount which will also move from side to side. As a result, I watch your workflow carefully to see if I can garner any useful tips. After gathering all the bits I think I will need to venture down this route, I'm hoping to capture my first images soon.

I think the color shot at the end was better than the b&w. Partly because the color added something to it, but the framing worked better for my liking.

Lovely feel to the overall session. Very relaxing. Im favouring the colour version as the pastel colours seem to have more impact. It certainly is an art is large format film photography. Have you considered doing a vlog comparing digital with film? Nice work as always Craig👍
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks James, yes the colour is just edging it for me too. I did do a vlog a while back comparing a 4x5 film shot to a digital file (Beach Still Life - Isle of Skye) and I may do it again. It is interesting to see the results. There are reasons I don't do it every time (as it would be possible) when I go out on the film photography trips. I think it would make for an interesting vlog to try to get over why I'm choosing to shoot more film over digital. Cheers James, you've got me thinking.

@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, yes I've just checked and the you can input any format you like. There's a huge line up of camera/lens options. I added the Fuji GX617 from their list and it gave me an option to add one of four lenses to it.

Thanks fo the vid again. I'm curious which of the shots of the door (in the greenhouse) you like better, color or B&W?
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, I'm just preferring the colour at the moment. I like the way the greens and yellows frame the image on all sides keeping the white door as the focal point. With the b&w shot, the yellow and green leaves show up as quite different tones so there's a nice separation there. I think it's one of those compositions where it works well both ways.

As a 5x4 photographer myself, I enjoyed seeing this. Do you have any other lenses for the MPP? I assume the lens you used is a 150mm. I have a Linholf classic Technika built in 1976 that I bought and it was like new, just a little lubrication and another viewing glass with fresnel lens was all it needed.
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I'm mostly using my 135mm but also have a 90mm but this has been tricky to use as the screen on the MPP is not the greatest. I've recently added a cheap fresnel to this which has helped a lot.

Excellent photos! It's amazing how much detail you can get with 4x5. Love that scene at 3:45 and wish you got a shot of that. Do you think the artist viewfinder is worth it if I don't shoot large format and only 35mm/120? Thanks as always!
@CraigPrentisPhoto
@CraigPrentisPhoto 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris, that was a nearby bonfire catching the light. The app is useful for my LF work. I don't use it a lot with 120/35mm as I tend to be more handheld and freer when I work with these cameras. I find it's useful for working out the position to set up in (with LF) when I'm there at the scene and also when I'm out and about without a camera and want to record compositions that I might come back to later as the they just get stored on my phone.
