It’s crazy to think that this is a “stills” camera, not a video camera, yet people complain that it overheats... sorry, I should be more specific; it overheats only during video... wait... hold on... it only overheats when doing freakin’ 8k, high bit rate video... jeez, what’s wrong with me? I forgot to mention that it only does so after 20 minutes of continuous 8k recording. After 20 minutes of continuous 8K! recording, this STILLS camera will intentionally stop recording so that no heat-related damage can occur and this STILLS camera can continue to reliably work in professional environments for decades to come... ....if only Canon would consider making a line of cameras that are specifically geared toward meeting the needs of videographers...

I LOL’d but yes. I think this thing is amazing while also agreeing that I think it would be best that canon makes a 4K or 6K powerhouse video version For the KZfaqr types. Everyone will destroy those thing on KZfaq though because they want to buy a video camera haha. Personally I’m beyond excited to see the stills from this thing

I can’t wait to get one... I agree though, I would only be using this as a stills camera with the occasional short video clips. I kinda feel like there will be haters with any camera released, but at the end of the day Canon always makes amazingly reliable cameras that we can count on.

Yeah. It’s easily the most surprising/impressive camera I’ve ever bought. Still amazed with everything I can do with it

Thanks for your thoughts on the R5. I'm still anxiously awaiting mine. My use case is very similar to yours. My 1DX3 and 1DX2 are my prime sports action cameras. I think that I will continue to prefer an optical viewfinder for sports due to the latency/ eye strain issue I found when I tested an EOS R. My 5D4 has been a higher resolution workhorse since it launched and I picked up a 5DSR a couple of years ago for really hi-res stuff. I'll sell both if the R5 is as good as it sounds for stills. I only dabble in video, but the R5 should be useful on a gimbal with its smaller form factor, lighter weight and articulating screen. My only concern at this point is that I'll want 4K 120 in bursts and 4K 60P for 5-minute clips. If I can't get that because the camera is too warm from shooting stills, I will also overheat.

I agree completely. The latency is never quick enough for sports (in my opinion). Also the eye strain is real in extreme lighting situations. I had 5D4 and briefly eos R. Sold both and also want the R5 for high res, backup, discrete etc etc. I think the overheating is probably not as bad in those recording formats from what I’ve heard but have yet to test. Also they allegedly will add 1080p 120 via firmware which realistically would be more useful for most dumb clips I need with a camera like this.

Really appreciated seeing you unbox and sharing your thoughts with your background in PJ! I think if I switched back to Canon (currently Sony) it’d be for the glass 😍 I can’t wait to rent + try this combo myself!

They are both great but the service and especially this new glass is really amazing! (The RF lenses)
