Car thefts are on the rise. Why are thieves rarely caught?

If someone steals your car, they're likely to get away with it. That's true in Chicago and nationwide. CBS reporters have been asking law enforcement why most auto theft cases are never solved. National consumer correspondent Ash-har Quraishi has part of our team coverage.

A $15 steering wheel lock put on the backside of you steering wheel is pretty good insurance that nobody could possibly steal it. A $30 apple airtag would make it trackable if it's stolen. Not bad insurance for $45. Let's make it harder for these scumbags to steal cars.

The spike in car thefts started way before Brandon Johnson showed up. Arguably the biggest catalyst for the spike is the lack of a specific anti-theft feature in many Kia and Hyundai models hence why they're the most frequently targeted.

If car thefts are on the rise and practically nobody is getting caught then maybe the long term solution is to radically change how people get around by investing in more public transportation infrastructure like rail, buses, cycling infrastructure, and improving the walkability of towns and cities.

Years ago (pre-Johnson, pre-Lightfoot), 4:53 Police Department disbanded the Auto Theft Section of its Detective Division. Auto thefts were just reassigned to the general property crimes detectives. Chicago gave up on catching car thieves. It takes specially trained and subject matter focused detectives to make a dent. Chicago gave up under Rahm and Richie.
